  • This paper evaluates the mechanical properties and durability of cement matrix blended with mineral admixtures and ferronickel slag(FNS) powder which is an industrial b y-product during ferronickel smelting process. The hydration heat, pore structure, compressive strength, length change, rapid chloride penetration test(RCPT), and freezing and thawing resistance of ternary blended cement matrix were investigated and compared with ordinary portland cement matrix. The result showed that the compressive strength of ternary blended cement matrix using ferronickel slag powder and mineral mixture was low in strength compared to the reference concrete, but recovered to a certain extent by using alkali activator. Length change of cement mortar using FNS powder have shown less shrinkage occurs than the reference specimen. In addition, irrespective of using the alkali-activators, all ternary mix are indicative of the 'very low' range for chloride ion penetrability according to the ASTM C 1202, and the freeze-thaw resistance also showed excellent results.

  • A high-precision force-feedback 3-axes accelerometer developed in Korea has been investigated and studied for the verification of feasibility in the computational analysis and health monitoring of civil infrastructures. Through a series of experiment, the nonlinearity, bandwidth, low-frequency signal measurement accuracy and bias characteristics of the accelerometer has been thoroughly compared to those of two accelerometers produced by two market leaders in domestic and global accelerometer market. The experiment results shows that the overall measurement performance of the accelerometer has superiority over the performance of the two accelerometers from global market leader companies. Especially, the accelerometer shows a better low-frequency signal measurement accuracy and constant bias characteristic, which are mostly required in the computational analysis and the long-term health monitoring of large-scale civil infrastructures.

  • Purpose: This study aims to investigate and explain the influence of personal characteristics on female immigrants' perception and attitude towards the Korean food culture. Methods: Exploratory research was performed by conducting a self-administered survey. A purposive sampling method was used to recruit 289 participants to determine their level of information awareness, perception and familiarity with Korean food culture. Results: Female immigrants' mean FNS score was 3.70. FNS score decreased in women from Northeast Asia, women who received higher education, and in urban women. The level of information awareness of Korean Food culture was 3.47, which was above average. Women from Southeast Asia had a higher level of awareness about cooking methods and table setting. Females living in the countryside and those who had lived for more than 7 years in Korea had higher levels of information awareness than other groups. Women from Southeast Asia perceived that Korean food is spicy; on the other hand, women from Northeast Asia discerned that Korean food is pungent and is prepared scientifically. The neophilic group more positively recognized Korean foods based on taste and nutritional value than did the neophobic group. Subjects living in the countryside were more likely to evaluate nutritional value, scientific aspects and artistry higher. The research also found that the neophilic group and immigrants who had lived for more than 7 years in Korea were significantly correlated with the familiarity with Korean food culture. Conclusion: The findings provide an initial step towards developing a customized education program for female marriage immigrants to adapt and to become familiar with Korean food culture with a comprehensive understanding of personal traits for accepting a new food culture.

  • To reduce the environmental load of the construction industry, there is a need to minimize construction and demolition by strengthening the eco-friendliness of building materials and extending the durable lifespan. Therefore, while many Hanok roof finishing methods have been proposed to address these problems, the current trend is to use the existing method due to issues such as economic feasibility, weight, and durability. The manufacturing method of clay roof tiles used as roofing materials for Hanok buildings is optimized by using a mixture of 64.5% Gyeongju clay, 15.0% kaolin, 15.0% FNS(Ferro Nickel Slag), and 5.5% MAS(Magnesia Aluminum Silicate) under optimal conditions. The results of the experiment involving firing at 1,125℃ showed that flexural strength of 12,102N, which is higher than the standard of KS F 3510, an absorption rate of 6.08%, a volume specific gravity of 2.15g/cm3, and the freeze-thaw properties were satisfied. A method for securing stable quality was studied.

  • The flavonoid apigenin and its O-methyl derivative, genkwanin, have various biological activities and can be sourced from some vegetables and fruits. Microorganisms are an alternative for the synthesis of flavonoids. Here, to synthesize genkwanin from tyrosine, we first synthesized apigenin from p-coumaric acid using four genes (4CL, CHS, CHI, and FNS) in Escherichia coli. After optimization of different combinations of constructs, the yield of apigenin was increased from 13 mg/l to 30 mg/l. By introducing two additional genes (TAL and POMT7) into an apigenin-producing E. coli strain, we were able to synthesize 7-O-methyl apigenin (genkwanin) from tyrosine. In addition, the tyrosine content in E. coli was modulated by overexpressing aroG and tyrA. The engineered E. coli strain synthesized approximately 41 mg/l genkwanin.

  • An implementation scheme of the magnetic nerve stimulator using a switching mode power supply is proposed. By using a switching mode power supply rather than a conventional linear power supply for charging high voltage capacitors, the weight and size of the magnetic nerve stimulator can be considerably reduced. Maximum output voltage of the developed magnetic nerve stimulator using the switching mode power supply is 3,000 volts and switching time is about 100 msec. Experimental results or human nerve stimulations using the developed stimulator are presented.

  • The aim of this study was to utilize ferronickel slag produced in the manufacture of stainless steel as a flowable backfill material for underground use using crushed fine powder. Experimental combinations were made using two components: Case A (sand) and Case B (soil). The optimal mixing ratio of Case A was sand (58.4%), ferronickel slag fine powder (21.6%), cement (1.8%), and water (18.2%). In the case of B, the optimal mixing ratio was determined to be soil (53.0%), ferronickel slag fine powder (20.0%), cement (1.7%), and water (25.3%). The uniaxial compressive strength of case A, which is a mixture of ordinary sand and ferronickel slag powder, was relatively larger than that of case B using soil. In addition, the strength of the specimen increased with increasing curing time. The uniaxial compressive strength tended to increase with increasing curing time. In addition, the unconfined compression strength of the fluid backfill material using common sand as the main material was relatively larger than that of the mixed material using soil as the main material. In case A, the uniaxial compressive strength ranged from 0.17-0.33 MPa, 0.21-0.39 MPa, and 0.19-0.40 MPa, respectively, at curing times of 7, 14, and 28 days. From the experimental results, it was concluded that the ratio of FNS powder and cement mixture was the most appropriate for Case A3. Case B, which used soil as the main material, showed a similar tendency to Case A. As a result of the dissolution test for evaluating the environmental harm of the FNS fine powder, there was no dissolution of substances harmful to the environment.
