In this paper, we propose an efficient search algorithm for finding an optimal schedule to minimize makespan, while avoiding deadlock situation in Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) with finite capacity, in which each job needs to be processed in several job stages for completion. The proposed algorithm uses a modeling and control method based on Petri-net. Especially, we improve the efficiency of the search algorithm by using a priority rule and an efficient bounding function during the search procedure. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated through a numerical experiment, showing that it holds considerable promise for providing an optimal solution efficiently comparing to past work.
This paper describes the instructional flexible manufacturing system(FMS) laboratory facility at Virginia Polytechnic Institute(VPI) which is directed at problems and issues in the design, implementation and control of computer integrated manufacturing systems. It begins with a configuration and an operational description of FMS laboratory facilities. Next, relevant curricula in manufacturing systems design and control, which can use the FMS laboratory for instructional purpose, are introduced, A computer simulation can be used as an excellent tool for analysis prior to implementation of FMS as well as an on-going improvement tool. A brief survey of simulation languages is lastly included.

FMS is the system which improves the productivity by making production lines flexible. FMS is composed of manufacturing system, material handling system, and software to control them. FMS is a complicate system; therefore, computer is required to control FMS efficiently. In this paper the concepts of FMS are shortly reviewed and the computer software and programming strategy to control FMS are presented.

This research is concerned with buffer management in a multi-cell FMS(Flexible Manufacturing System) with an AGVS(Automated Guided Vehicle System). To reduce blocking and starving caused by breakdowns, variablility in process times, and diversity of part routing, buffer is needed. Due to the high per unit buffer cost, which primarily consists of floor space and equipment cost, the total capacity of buffers in an FMS is very limited. Therefore, proper buffer management can provide a high system efficiency. This paper presents a buffer management model for a multi-cell FMS with an AGVS and a simulation study to compare the proposed model to a conventional buffer management model in a job shop FMS.

The problems concerning FMC (Flexible manufacturing cell) system layout were treated in this paper. In fact, there being no clear definition about FMS (Flexible manufacturing system), it could be treated as the system adopting flexible-automation and FMS has been improving as a form of parts machining system. It was thought that the problems of combination of machine tool groups and parts family were important. Parts familly and machine tool groups were made up by means of multivariate analysis and the minimum trnsfer concept using correlation coefficient ($\rho$). And FMC system was layout by directional graph according to the FMS classifications.

This paper is concerned with software developments for scheduling and sequencing of FMS. The scheduling algorithms are developed for 3 types of FMS:single machine type FMS, flowshop type FMS. assembly line type FMS. For the single machine type FMS. full enumeration algorithm is used. For the flowshop type FMS heuristic algorithms are developed. For the assembly type FMS the exsisting PERT/CPM algorithm is applied. Numerical examples are presented for illustration of each algorithm. Each soft ware program list are attached as appendices.

This paper is focused on the formulation of explicit closed-form functions describing the performance measures of the general flexible manufacturing system (FMS)according to the strategy of material handling system(MHS). the performance measures such as the production rate, the production lead-time and the utilization rate of the general FMS are expressed, respectively, as the explicit closed-form functions of the part processing time, the service rate of the material handling system (MHS) and the number of machine tools in the FMS. For this, the gensral FMS is presented as a generalized stochastic Petri net model, then, the moment generating function (MGF) based approach is applied to obtain the steady-state probabity formulation. Based on the steady-state formulation, the explicit closed-form functions for performance measures of the probability FMS can be obtained. Finally, the analytical results are compared with the Petri net simulation results to verify the validity of the suggested method. The paper is of significance in the sense that it provides a comprehensive formula for performance measures of the FMS even to the industry engineers and academic reademic resuarchers who have no background on Markov chain analysis method or Petrinet modeling
Due to the complexity of part flow and limited resources, FMS(Flexible Manufacturing System) develops blocking, starvation and deadlock problems, which reduce its performance. In order to minimize such problems buffers are imposed between workstations of the manufacturing lines. In this paper, we are concerned with finding the optimal buffer allocation with regard to maximizing system throughput in limited total buffer capacity situation of FMS. A dynamic programming algorithm to solve the buffer allocation problem is proposed. Computer simulation using Arena is experimented to show the validation of the proposed algorithm.

FMS is a distributed system composed of various programmable manufacturing hardware such as robots and NC machines. For the autonomous operation of such a system, an integrated software layer for the control and monitoring in needed on top of the manufacturing hardware. However, constructing and maintaining such a software layer is difficult due to the complexity of a underlying FMS and its frequently changing nature. To cope with this problem, this paper proposes an object-oriented FMS integration model, in which objects acting as virtual manufacturing cells are instantiated for each physical cell in the underlying object-oriented database. Various other entities involved in manufacturing processes and their relationship to the cell objects are also captured in the database. This paper describes the structure of this object-oriented FMS database on our prototype implementation called FREE.

Flexible Manufacturing System(FMS) is an integrated, computer controlled complex of automated material handling devices and numerically controlled machine tools that can simultaneously process medium-sized volumes of a variety of part types. This paper discusses planning problems that can be solved for efficient use of an FMS and present an integrated decision support system for FMS production planning and scheduling problems. FMSDS(Flexible Manufacturing Systems Decision Support System) consists of data handling modules, part selection module, loading module, load adjusting module, scheduling module and simulation module etc. This paper presents the solution methodology of each subproblems and integrated interfaces between subproblems using hierarchical approaches and loop controls considering the relationships between subproblems. A case study by this model is presented.
