  • The wave reflections from several types of open-ended coaxial probes contacted on the various materials have been analyzed precisely by using the finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) technique in this paper. Due to the coordinate transformation from three-dimension to two-dimension, the computation was performed very efficiently. It was found that the reflection from an open-ended coaxial probe reduces as frequency or diameter of a coaxial line increases. The reflections from multi-layered media were also analyzed by the FDTD method. This analysis technique was verified by comparison with measurements and theoretical computations.

  • Noninvasive multifrequency microwave radiometry using coaxial waveguide antenna has been investigated for a homogeneous and our layer human body model. We derived finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) algorithm and equation of MUR and generalized perfectly matched layer(GPML) absorbing boundary conditions(ABCs) in cylindrical coordination. The coupling between coaxial waveguide antenna and a biological object was analyzed by use of the FDTD method using MUR and GPML ABCs to obtain the absorbed power patterns in the media. The specific absorption rates(SAR) distribution which was corresponding to the temperature distribution was calculated in each region by use of the steady-state response in FDTD method. The SAR patterns of FDTD method using MUR ABCs was compared with those of FDTD method using GPML ABCs.

  • The finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is used to analyze circular waveguide transformer in order to match different two waveguides. 2-dimensional cylindrical FDTD algorithm is applied for rotationally symmetric. The transformer is inserted at a circular-to-circular waveguide junction and two type transformers are proposed. One is a partially dielectric filled circular waveguide type and the other is filled a tapered circular dielectric rod. The numerical results are derived for various structure parameters, such as transformer length. dielectric diameter and waveguide diameter.

  • This study deals with the heat transfer analysis on phase change optical disc with land/groove recording by means of numerical method. Finite difference time domain(FDTD) method was used to obtain the amount of absorption of light propagating inside disc and finite difference element(FEM) method was used to calculate the temperature distribution. The calculated results present the detailed information of recording characteristics on the phase change optical disc. The temperature profiles are quite different between the land track and the groove track. The recorded mark shape on land track is smaller and more elliptic than that on groove track. It is shown that the thermal problem to the neighboring track takes place due to secondary peaks. It is found that the different write strategy should be applied to land and groove recording, respectively.

  • A numerical simulation and an experimental implementation of T-shaped microstrip-fed printed slot array antenna are presented in this paper. The proposed antenna with relative permittivity 4.3 and thickness 1.0mm is analyzed by the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method. The dependence of design parameters on the bandwidth characteristics is investigated. The measured bandwidth of twin-slot array antenna is from 1.37 GHz to 2.388 GHz, which is approximately 53.9 % for return loss less than or equal to -10 dB. The bandwidth of twin-slot is about 1.06 % larger than that of single-slot antenna. The measured results are in good agreement with the FDTD results.

  • In this paper, a dual-band CPW antenna is designed with the aid of Genetic Algorithm and Finite-Difference Time-Domain method. The design goal is to minimize the magnitude of S$\sub$11/ in the frequency band between 1.8㎓ and 2.4㎓. The resonance frequencies are shifted by about 80MHz and 50MHz from the desired frequencies at 1.8㎓ and 2.4㎓ respectively. But the bandwidth agrees well with that of Simulation.

  • Using the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method that analyzes the Maxwell equations in time domain, we simulated the characteristics of optical wave propagation and defect modes in two-dimensional photonic crystals composed of dielectric cylinders located on triangular, square, and honeycomb lattices. In particular, we investigated the properties of defect modes as the permittvity of the defects is varied. aried.

  • In this paper, plasma modeling is achieved using fluid dynamics, thereby electron density is derived. The way proposes the key to overcoming the limitations of conventional researches which adopt simplified plasma model. The result is coupled with Maxwell-Boltzmann system in order to calculate scattering waves in various incident angle. The first part is dedicated to perform plasma modeling in dielectric barrier discharge(DBD) structure. Suzen-Huang model is adopted among various models due to the fact that it uses time independent variables to calculated potential and electron distribution in static system. The second part deals with finite difference time domain(FDTD) scheme which computes the scattered waves when the modulated Gaussian pulse is incident. Founded on it, radar cross section(RCS) is observed. Consequently, RCS is decreased by 1~2 dB with DBD plasma. The result is analogous to the RCS measurement in other researches.

  • Characteristics of ground-penetrating radar(GPR) signals for detecting buried pipes are investigated numerically. Transmitting and receiving parts of a GPR system, a subsurface soil and a plastic pipe filled with a dielectric material are modeled by using the finite-difference time-domain(FDTD) method. FDTD simulations for observing aspects of GPR signals are performed as a function of the diameter of the pipe and the permittivity of the filling material in the pipe. GPR signals scattered by a dielectric filled pipe appear as a superposition of two waves, such as the specular wave from the front convex surface of the pipe and the axial wave from the rear concave surface of the pipe. We show that the amplitude, the polarity, the delay time of two waves depend on the size of the pipe and the permittivity of the filling material in the pipe.

  • The current on the thin planar structure as an element of the transversely fed electromagnetically coupled(EMC) microstrip dipole array antenna is obtained by using the integral forms of the finite difference time domain(FDTD) method. This method was applied to calculating the optimum current distribution (Doplh-Tchebyscheff distribution) of each dipole element on the feed line as a function of their offset positions for the narrow main beam width and the side beam level below -20 dB. The current on each dipole substitutes for the electric and magnetic current densities on the virtual surface of the FDTD calculation to express the far field intensity, the calculation time and the computer memeory can be reduced to about 80% and 1.3 Mbyte, respectively. The calculated radiation patterns are compared to the measured values and these are in good agreement.
