  • Purpose: To analyze the effect of accommodative control and change values between subjective refraction (SR) and auto-refraction (AR) according to application of fogging after accommodative stimulation depending on ametropia type. Methods: Myopic ametropia 76 eyes and hyperopic ametropia 52 eyes participated for this study. SR and AR values measured by three test conditions (Before accommodative stimulation; Before AS, After accommodative stimulation; After AS, and After application of fogging; After AF) were compared, respectively. Results: In myopic eyes, (-)spherical power by SR and AR in After AS test was significantly increased as compared to Before AS test, (-)spherical power in After AF test was decreased to the level of Before AS test. The differences of spherical power between SR and AR were highly measured by SR in After AS test, and highly measured by AR in After AF test, respectively. In hyperopic eyes, (+)spherical power of SR significantly decreased in After AS test compared to Before AS test, more (+)spherical power was detected in After AF test compared to Before AS test. (+)spherical power of AR have no significant difference between Before AS and After AS test, but more (+)spherical power was detected in After AF test compared to Before AS test. The differences of (+)spherical power between SR and AR were significant in all test conditions. Among 52 eyes which were measured as hyperopic ametropia, 7 eyes were measured as myopia by SR in After AS test. In case of AR, 25 eyes among 52 eyes were mismeasured as myopia of ranges from -0.25 D to -1.25 D in Before AS test, 26 eyes in After AS test, and 19 eyes in After AF test were mismeasured as myopia of ranges from -0.25 D to -1.25 D. Conclusions: Regardless of ametropia type, accommodative control by After AF test was effective on both refraction process. However, in auto-refraction for hyperopic eyes, the misdetermined proportion of refractive error's type was high due to consistent accommodative intervention in all test condition. Therefore, in order to obtain an accurate value of refractive errors, full correction should be determined by subjective refraction process after fogging method.

  • To determine the effect of base curve and diameter of soft contact lenses on the fitting under the various corneal curvature, the model eyes which was made of either stainless steel or ordinary wood, were used as the substitutes for human eyes. The evaluations of fit of the soft contact lenses on both wood model eyes and human eyes were found to be very similar to each other. All the contact lenses except very thin ones became flat after fit on the stainless steel model eyes because the model eye could not preserve enough moisture to hold the edge of contact lenses on the steel ball's surface. The relationships between the base curves of contact lenses and radii of cornea for the optimum (normal) fit were measured as follows : corneal curvature (C.C)<7.6 mm : base curve(B.C) 8.4 mm, C.C 7.6~7.8 mm : B.C 8.4~8.5 mm. C.C 7.8~8.1 mm : B.C 8.6 mm. It is concluded that larger base curve is required for the eyes which have abnormal bulge on its cornea. It is found that very thin soft contact lenses can be easily twisted or folded regardless of moisture content when they were fit on the relatively dry eyes(corneas).

  • Purpose: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of circle contact lens wearing on visual quality of the eyes after a refractive surgery. Methods: The objective visual quality was evaluated for 40 eyes who did not get refractive surgery and 30 eyes who got a refractive surgery after applying plano circle contact lenses on their eyes, respectively. Modulation transfer function (MTF), objective scatter index (OSI) and the focusing ratio on retina (Strehl ratio) were measured by using optical quality analysis system (OQAS) and the correlation between pupil size and objective visual quality was analyzed by measuring the pupil size. Results: When wearing circle contact lens on the eyes after refractive surgery, MTF and Strehl ratio were reduced and OSI was increased compared with the eyes without refractive surgery. The eyes after a refractive surgery showed more significant difference changes in MTF, OSI and Strehl ratio according to the pupil size compared with those without refractive surgery. Conclusions: The results showed that wearing of circle contact lens after the refractive surgery has deteriorated the objective visual quality based on the quality of focused image on the retina. Therefore, we suggest that sufficient understanding and consideration about the deterioration of visual quality is necessary in the case of circle contact lens wearing after refractive surgery.

  • Purpose : We compared intraocular pressure (IOP) values measured by two types of tonometers in condition of normotensive and glaucomatous rat model. We tried to determine which of tonometer can more easily and accurately measure the IOP of animal model. Methods : Glaucomatous eyes were induced by intracameral injections of hyaluronic acid in right eyes of six-week-old male Spargue-Dawley (SD) rats. Normotensive contralateral eyes were left eyes of the SD rats. IOP was measured using a rebound tonometer (Tonolab) and a immersive tonometer ($Tonopen^{(R)}$ XL) about 3:00 pm. Results : The mean IOP values of normotensive control eyes were $10.80{\pm}1.03mmHg$ by Tonopen, and $15.10{\pm}0.73mmHg$ by Tonolab. They were statistically insignificant (p = .1). The mean IOP values of glaucomatous experimental eyes were $30.20{\pm}2.67mmHg$ by Tonopen, and $37.90{\pm}2.73mmHg$ by Tonolab. They were statistically insignificant (p = .95). High IOP values of glaucomatous eyes by two types of tonometers had strong positive correlation each other (r = .904, p < .01). Conclusion : This is the first study to compare IOP values using two types of tonometers between normotensive and glaucomatous model made by intracameral injection of hyaluronic acid. Tonopen should be used carefully when the IOP is within normal range, and both Tonopen and Tonolab can be used reliably when the IOP is high.

  • The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the spherical equivalent visual acuity (VA) and uncorrected astigmatism. On 108 emmetropic eyes, the spherical equivalent VA was measured for cross cylindrical lens (CC lens)-induced astigmatic eyes and the VA-astigmatism relation determined. On 158 astigmatic eyes, the spherical equivalent VA and corrected astigmatism were measured and the measured values were compared with the calculated values from the VA-astigmatism relation by correlation coefficient analysis. Subsequent to that, the relationship between spherical equivalent VA and uncorrected astigmatism was made. The relationship was fitted for an exponential equation. Correlation coefficient between calculated values by equation and measured values for astigmatic eyes was 0.991 (p<0.01). The relationship between the spherical equivalent VA and the uncorrected astigmatism was decided as follows (spherical equivalent VA / uncorrected astigmatism): 1.0 / 0.25 D, 0.9 / 0.50 D, 0.8 / 0.75 D, 0.7 / 1.00 D, 0.6 / 1.25 D, 0.5 / 1.50 D, 0.4 / 2.00 D, 0.3 / 2.50 D, 0.2 / 3.00 D, 0.1 / 4.00 D, and 0.05 / 4.75 D. In conclusion, the relationship table devised from this study is a useful reference for predicting uncorrected astigmatism by measurement of decimal VA in spherical equivalent.

  • For the studying of the optical property of the human eye by using the Seidel aberrations with schematic eyes, we have used the several paraxial and fine schematic eyes. In another world, after fixing the iris ot aperture pinhole on the anterior of lens, we investigated how the surface contributions and the surface asphericity affected the optical properties of schematic eyes by using the Seidel aberration coefficients variation. Also, by analysis of dividing both a relaxed state and the accommodation state of the eye, we investigated the change of the optical properties during the change of accommodation.

  • The purpose of study was to analyze how the visual information affects balance control of individuals during single leg stance. A total of 27 young normal people (20 males and 7 females, age: $13.7{\pm}2.6$, height: $162.3{\pm}13.2$ cm, weight: $53.9{\pm}13.9$ kg) was voluntarily involved in the experiment. The subjects were requested to maintain balance for 20 seconds with eyes both open and closed on a force plate and then foot ground reaction data were collected for that duration. Results showed that mean velocity of COP in closed eyes condition was larger 1.84 times than that of the open-eyes condition and range of vertical angle was increased approximately one degree in the closed eyes condition. To accomplish a balance, the frequency power in mediolateral and anteroposterior components of the foot-ground reaction force was increased by 1.3~1.4 times. Consequently, visual absence during single leg stance can result in critical loss of balance and lead to instability of body control.

  • Insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) mRNA levels in the eyes, heart, liver and breast muscle removed from dwarf egg-type, normal egg-type and normal meat-type chicken embryos at 7, 14 and 20 days of incubation were measured. There was no influence of chicken strain on IGF-I gene expression in the eyes and liver. The IGF-I gene expression in eyes increased significantly along with the incubation period. In the liver, IGF-I gene expression at 20 days of incubation was significantly higher than that at 14 days of incubation. In the muscle, the lowest value for IGF-I gene expression was observed in meat-type chicken embryos. Regression analysis revealed that IGF-I gene expression was significantly correlated to the weights of the eyes and liver, but not the muscle. We conclude that there is little influence of strain on tissue IGF-I gene expression in chicken embryos during incubation but that tissue development in chicken embryos is nevertheless at least partly regulated by the change in IGF-I gene expression.

  • This research is aimed at examining age-related changes of postural sway when people stand upright, examining external effects which can be exerted upon the postural sway (experiment 1), and also analyzing specific changing characters of posture-control by sudden impacts (experiment 2). The total number of subjects was 115, who are in twenties through seventies and 75 of them were participated in experiment 2. In experimen 1, the subjects were examined for 25 seconds respectively while standing upright with both feet and with eyes opened, standing upright with both feet and with eyes closed, and standing upright with a single foot and with eyes opened. In experiment 2, only while standing upright with both feet and with eyes opened they were examined for 5 seconds. Main findings were as follows: 1. In the single-foot standing position, the growing older exerted more important effects upon the fluctuation length and area of the center of gravity than in the both-foot standing position. 2. The standard deviation was increasing with age in the fluctuation length and the fluctuation area of the center of gravity. 3. There were no significant differences in daily variation, temperature change, and muscle burdening. 4. The recuperation from the postural sway by external impacts was so slow with age. 5. There were little differences in decrease frequencies among the subjects but younger persons.
