  • This paper presents a new approximation for the crystalline lens of the human eye with refracting surfaces based on Gullstrand-Emsley schematic eye during accommodation. A new model eye describes the isoindical profiles in the form of symmetric spherical surfaces. A vary important condition which was imposed upon the parameters (thickness, radius) was the lens volume conservation during accommodation.

A New Multi-Flower, Spray Chrysanthemum Cultivar for Cut Flower, "Eye Ball" with Single Type and Light White Petals (선명한 백색의 절화용 다화성 홑꽃 스프레이국화 "아이볼" 육성)

  • A new spary chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflorum) cultivar 'Eye Ball' was developed from a cross between 'Rima' and 'Yen' followed by selections of seedlings and lines at the Flower Rearch Institute, Gyeongnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services (ARES) from 2002 to 2006. Its characteristics were investigated three times from 2004 to 2006 under forcing culture in spring and retarding culture in autumn. The natural flowering time of 'Eye Ball' was October 20th, but year-round production was possible by shading and lighting. Its flower was 3.1cm in diameter, and had 38.4 petals and 26.8 flowers per stem in autumn. Its petal was narrow (0.4 cm) and pink with green in color at the flower center. To flower in the short day condition, for 'Eye Ball' was about 47 days in spring, and 'Eye Ball' showed a vase life of 20.9 days in autumn. This cultivar was registered for a commercialization in 2007. 'Eye Ball' would be cultured under the greenhouse and rain shelter condition in Korea.

The Experimental Study on Anti-bacterial Potency of Variou Herb-medicine used for eye disease on Staphylococcus epidermidis Keratitis (다종의 안질환 사용 처방이 각막염 유발균인 Staphylococcus epidermidis에 미치는 영향)

  • Objective : This experimental study was performed to investigate the effect of Herbe-medicine used for eye disease(Sean-tang, Jinpi-san, Tangpo-san, Copitdis Rhizoma) on Staphylococcus epidermidis keratitis. Methods : After administering various herbal eye drops on Staphylococcus epidermidis, I measured MIC and the size of inhibition zone. MIC was measured by dropping from 20 to $50{\mu}{\ell}$ according to density. Anti-bacterial potency was measured by the size of inhibition zone with change of volume under 2 days culture condition. Also continuous anti-bacterial potency of herbal eye drops was measured by the size of inhibition zone according to 2 days and 6 days culture each under the $50{\mu}{\ell}$ condition. Results : 1. MIC on Staphylococcus epidermidis in Sean-tang, Jinpi-san was 1%, $50{\mu}{\ell}$ 2. MIC on Staphylococcus epidermidis in Tangpo-san, Coptidis rhizoma was 10%, $50{\mu}{\ell}$ 3. MIC on Staphylococcus epidermidis in Cravit was 0.1%, $20{\mu}{\ell}$. 4. Under the 2 days culture condition, the size of inhibition zone on Staphylococcus epidermidis by volume for Sean-tang was 10.0mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$, Jinpi-san was 16.0mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$, Tangpo-san was 17.5mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$, Coptidis rhizoma was 31.0mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$ and Cravit was 34mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$, showed the highest anti-bacterial potency. 5. Under the $50{\mu}{\ell}$ condition, the size of inhibition zone on Staphylococcus epidermidis by 2 and 6 culture days for Sean-tang was 47.5mm in 6days, Jinpi-san was 36.0mm in 6days, Tangpo-san was 45.0mm in 6 days and Cravit was 48.0mm in 6 days, which showed the highest anti-bacterial potency. 6. Under the $50{\mu}{\ell}$ culture condition, the size of inhibition zone on Staphylococcus epidermidis by 2 and 6 culture days for Coptidis rhizoma was 31.0mm in 2 days and 6 days, which showed the same anti-bacteria1 potency. Conclusions : The present author think that Herbe-medicine used for eye disease can be used to cure Staphylococcus epidermidis keratitis and if further study is performed, the use of the Herbe-medicine used for eye disease will be valuable and beneficial in the clinical medicines.

  • Simulator sickness is one of the important side effect of virtual reality. Simulator sickness is influenced by various factors, and field of view (FOV) is one of them. The FOV is a viewing angle limited by the screen, and when the FOV is reduced, the simulator sickness is reduced, and the presence is lowered. Previous study developed a Dynamic FOV Restrictor (Center-fixed FOV Restrictor) to reduce simulator sickness while maintaining presence. It is a method that limits the FOV dynamically by reflecting the speed and angular velocity of the avatar. We also developed Eye-tracking Based Dynamic FOV Restrictor (Eye-tracking FOV Restrictor) by adding head rotations and eye movements. This study attempts to compare the simulator sickness and the presence of the No FOV Restrictor condition, the Center-fixed FOV Restrictor condition, and the Eye-tracking FOV Restrictor condition. The results showed that the simulator sickness of the Center-fixed FOV Restrictor condition is significantly lower than other two conditions. The results also showed that there were no significant differences in presence in three conditions. The interpretations and limitations of this study are discussed in this paper.

Performance Improvement for Robust Eye Detection Algorithm under Environmental Changes (환경변화에 강인한 눈 검출 알고리즘 성능향상 연구)

  • In this paper, we propose robust face and eye detection algorithm under changing environmental condition such as lighting and pose variations. Generally, the eye detection process is performed followed by face detection and variations in pose and lighting affects the detection performance. Therefore, we have explored face detection based on Modified Census Transform algorithm. The eye has dominant features in face area and is sensitive to lighting condition and eye glasses, etc. To address these issues, we propose a robust eye detection method based on Gabor transformation and Features from Accelerated Segment Test algorithms. Proposed algorithm presents 27.4ms in detection speed with 98.4% correct detection rate, and 36.3ms face detection speed with 96.4% correct detection rate for eye detection performance.

  • The purpose of this work is to identify the characteristic of eye movement for visual training of the elderly. This investigation is to examine the relationship between the head and the eye motor system for the localization of visual target direction in three-dimensional space. All experiments were performed in a soundproof chamber. Twenty-one red LEDs (Light-Emitting Diode, Brightness: 20cd/$m^2$) arrayed in three lines on a half circle-surrounding panel are used. LEDs are horizontally 30 degree apart and vertically 20 degree apart from each other. The condition of stimulation is random and anti-saccade. Physiological parameter such as EOG (Electro-Oculography) was measured by BIOPAC system. We measure the mean latency time, which is the time from the start of visual stimulation to the response of the human body. The result shows that the mean latency time is short in the case of the condition of anti-saccade, the fixed head and a quarter visual stimulation. This finding can be used in developing programs for various visual improvements for the elderly by analyzing the characteristic of eye movement.

A Case of Ocular Toxocariasis Successfully Treated with Albendazole and Triamcinolon

  • We present a case of ocular toxocariasis treated successfully with oral albendazole in combination with steroids. A 26-year-old male visited the authors' clinic with the chief complaint of flying flies in his right eye. The fundus photograph showed a whitish epiretinal scar, and the fluorescein angiography revealed a hypofluorescein lesion of the scar and late leakage at the margin. An elevated retinal surface and posterior acoustic shadowing of the scar were observed in the optical coherence tomography, and Toxocara IgG was positive. The patient was diagnosed with toxocariasis, and the condition was treated with albendazole (400 mg twice a day) for a month and oral triamcinolone (16 mg for 2 weeks, once a day, and then 8 mg for 1 week, once a day) from day 13 of the albendazole treatment. The lesions decreased after the treatment. Based on this study, oral albendazole combined with steroids can be a simple and effective regimen for treating ocular toxocariasis.

  • The human eyes are important facial landmarks for image normalization due to their relatively constant interocular distance. This paper introduces a novel approach for the eye detection task using optimal segmentation method for eye representation. The method consists of three steps: (1)edge extraction method that can be used to accurately extract eye region from the gray-scale face image, (2)extraction of eye region using labeling method, (3)eye localization based on intensity information. Experimental results show that a correct eye detection rate of 98.9% can be achieved on 2408 FERET images with variations in lighting condition and facial expressions.

Effects of Working Postures on Headache/Eye Strain in Korean Waged Workers: The 5th Working Condition Survey(2017) (근무자세가 두통/눈의 피로에 미치는 영향: 제5차 2017년 근로환경조사)

  • Objectives: The aim of this study was to examine the association of working posture with headache/eye strain in Korean waged workers. Methods: Data were collected from the 5th Korean Working Condition Survey. A total of 30,955 workers participated in this study. A four-items of working postures were measured using a 7-point Likert scale, and we categorized them into three groups ('normal', 'moderate', and 'severe') each 4 items. Headache/eye strain were measured using a self-administrative questionnaire ('yes' vs. 'no'). To examine the relationship between the total working postures score and headache/eye strain, we summed a 4-items of working postures. It was categorized into five groups according to the severity of exposures('normal', 'mild', 'moderate', 'severe', and 'very severe'). The multivariate logistic regression analysis was performed using the IBM SPSS(Ver. 25), and a p<.05 was considered significant. Results: The results show that 'fatiguing and painful posture' and 'posture repetitively using hands or arms' were associated with headache/eye strain after controlling for control variables. The total working posture score was positively associated with headache/eye strain. People with higher levels of the total working posture score were more likely to increase the risk of headache/eye strain compared to those of normal(OR: 1.844, 95% CI: 1.549~2.195 for 'mild'; OR: 2.564, 95% CI: 2.152~3.503 for 'moderate'; OR: 4.140, 95% CI: 3.432~4.994 for 'severe'; OR: 7.613, 95% CI: 5.625~10.304 for 'very severe') (p<.05 for trend). Conclusions: These results indicate that inappropriate working postures might play a crucial role in developing headache/eye strain. It is needed to improve the working environment, especially focusing on reducing inappropriate working posture at the organizational level.

MIC on Staphylococcus aureus in Cravit was 0.1%, $50{\mu}{\ell}$. 4. Under the 2 days culture condition, the size of inhibition zone on Staphylococcus aureus by volume for Sean-tang was 12.0mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$, Jinpi-san was 19.0mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$, Tangpo-san was 15.0mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$, Coptidis rhizoma was 32.7 mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$ and Cravit was 31mm in $50{\mu}{\ell}$, Coptidis rhizoma showed the highest anti-bacterial potency. 5. Under the $50{\mu}{\ell}$ condition, the size of inhibition zone on Staphylococcus aureus by 2 and 6 culture days for Sean-tang was 12.0mm, Jinpi-san was 19.0mm, Tangpo-san was 15.0mm, Coptidis rhizoma was 32.7mm and Cravit was 31.0 mm, which showed sameness anti-bacterial potency in 2 days and 6 days. Conclusions : The present author think that the herbal eye drops can be used to cure Staphylococcus aureus keratitis and if further study is performed, the use of the herbal eye drops will be valuable and beneficial in the clinical medicines.
