  • Toxoplasma gondii is a zoonotic parasite resulting in human infections and one of the infectious pathogens leading to uveitis and retinochoroiditis. The present study was performed to assess T. gondii infection in 20 ocular patients with chronic irregular recurrent uveitis (20 aqueous humor and 20 peripheral blood samples) using PCR. All samples were analyzed by nested PCR targeting a specific B1 gene of T. gondii. The PCR-positive rate was 25% (5/20), including 5% (1) in blood samples, 25% (5) in aqueous humor samples, and 5% (1) in both sample types. A molecular screening test for T. gondii infection in ocular patients with common clinical findings of an unclear retinal margin and an inflammatory membrane over the retina, as seen by fundus examination, may be helpful for early diagnosis and treatment.

  • In 2007, the first domestic pet insurance policies were introduced, and by 2023, numerous insurance products had been developed. The pet insurance market has been expanding steadily. However, as of 2022, only 0.8% of all pet owners have subscribed to pet insurance. Pet owners hesitate to enroll in pet insurance due to expensive premiums, unclear coverage details, and strict enrollment criteria. This paper proposes a model capable of detecting pet eye diseases and predicting their health age. Initially, EfficientNet is employed to identify the pet's eye disease, while OpenCV is utilized to locate and measure the size of the disease, enabling the calculation of the pet's healthy age. By leveraging the calculated health age, the aim is to aid insurance companies in determining pet insurance premiums. This model can facilitate the calculation of reasonable pet insurance rates based on the pet's eye condition and health age. Ultimately, the objective is to implement a system capable of detecting pet eye conditions and predicting their health age.

  • Purpose: We are to analyze optically how to affect the eye related with movement of the iris. Methods: Using the schematic eye to have the crystalline lens of the radial GRIN and the spherical GRIN forms that come to be planned in existing, the iris centre was moved 0.5 mm with nasal direction in order to be identical with the real eye. Also, considering that the iris centre move according to increase of the pupil size, the iris centre was moved 0.4 mm with temporal direction to analyze the optical performance change of the eye respectively. Results: Because of decrease in the spherical aberration, the schematic eye with nasal direction 0.5 mm eccentricity of the iris showed a different consequence plentifully compared with the performance of the real eye. Besides, the schematic eye with temporal direction 0.4 mm eccentricity of the iris showed that the spherical aberration somewhat increased. Conclusions: In case of design of the schematic eye with the similar real eye performance which the iris centre was moved 0.5 mm with nasal direction, we need to research about aspheric coefficient of optical constants of each refracting surface considering the performance change of a spherical aberration, a peripheral power error and astigmatism etc, owing to change of the real eye hence to be affected by the iris movement.

  • Objectives: Dry eye disease (DED) is an increasingly important public health problem in Korea. Previous studies conducted in Korea have reported inconsistent results regarding the protective effects of vitamin D on DED, and these discrepancies may be related to the relatively simple questionnaire that has been used. Thus, we evaluated the association of serum vitamin D levels with DED using the ocular surface disease index (OSDI). Methods: The present study evaluated data from participants in the Study Group for Environmental Eye Disease (2014-2015). This group included data from 752 participants, and data from 740 participants (253 men and 487 women) were analyzed in the present study. DED severity was evaluated using the OSDI. Results: Higher serum vitamin D levels were associated with a non-significantly reduced risk of DED in the crude analysis (odds ratio [OR], 0.991; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.971 to 1.011) and in the adjusted analysis (OR, 0.988; 95% CI, 0.966 to 1.010). In the crude analysis of no/mild DED vs. moderate/severe DED, men exhibited a decreased risk with increasing serum vitamin D levels (OR, 0.999; 95% CI, 0.950 to 1.051), while women exhibited an increased risk (OR, 1.003; 95% CI, 0.979 to 1.027). In these analyses, we found no significant associations. Conclusions: The findings of the present study support previous reports that serum vitamin D levels are not associated with DED.

  • In developed and industrialized countries life expectancy has increased significantly over the past century. As a consequence, the proportion of elderly individuals in these countries has also enlarged with the resulting increased burden on health care providers. In many developing countries the problem of age related and other eye disorders has far outstripped the ability to manage them. Accordingly, the World Health Organization (WHO) has introduced an initiative: Vision 2020 - The Right to Sight, with the objective of eliminating preventable blindness by the year 2020. This paper reviews the broad range of conditions involving external and internal structures of the eye and also the effects of aging on visual functions. It is hoped that this will provide a stimulus for increased study of these disorders, improved clinical diagnosis, and an enhanced interest and role in contributing to the objectives of the WHO and the World Council of Optometry with respect to early diagnosis, prevention and management of the diseases and disorders of the eye that are more prevalent in old age.

  • Background: Aging reduces cognitive abilities, including visual memory (VM) and visual discrimination (VD). Since common cortical networks subserve eye movement and attention, voluntary eye movement may improve visual attention. Visual selective attention was major role for memory, and visual memory and visual attention are intimately related. Objective: To identify the improvement in VD and VM, after implementing the eye movement program consisting of saccadic eye movement (SEM) and pursuit eye movement (PEM) in the institutionalized healthy elderly. Design: Randomized controlled trial. Methods: The study involved a sample of 36 participants, and the mean age was 79.03 years (range 76~84 years). They were randomly allocated to the experimental group (n=16) and control group (n=20). Participants in the experimental group performed SEM 5 times per week for 4 weeks: twice daily at the same time in the morning and afternoon. The program was carried out for 3 minutes, and it consisted of SEM and PEM. The target's moving frequency was set at 0.5 Hz. VM and VD at the baseline and post-intervention were measured using Motor-Free Visual Perception test-4 (MFVPT-4). Results: VM significantly improved in the experimental group (p < .01), and significant differences were observed compared to the control group (p < .01). There was no significant change in VD. Conclusion: The eye movement program consisting of SEM and PEM increased VM more than VD. Therefore, eye movement program was feasible interventions for improving VM in institutionalized elderly persons.

  • In this paper, we propose the design and implementation of a desktop LED stand and smart app that automatically adjusts color temperature and illuminance for optimal brightness and eye health by improving the structural problem of the LED stand. It is a tabletop LED stand that supports optimal brightness through color temperature control and heat transfer through infrared LED to relieve eye strain through blood circulation and muscle movement. The LED stand works with the smartphone to automatically adjust the optimal brightness and color temperature for the user's environment. In addition, the brightness of the infrared LED is adjusted to a living frequency of 4Hz to relax the eye muscles and reduce eye strain. This study implemented an effective measured data-based system of previous studies through the color temperature and illumination of LED lighting, and near-infrared rays, and presented meaningful results by conducting an experiment to prove the effect through subjects.

  • Background : There is increased recognition that rigorous approach to functional assessment will complement the assessment of clinical status. This study is to develop the appropriate visual function index in Korean patients with cataracts by the assessment of the reliability, validity of visual function indexes including VF-14. Methods : An prospective study was performed with 92 patients who had undergone either one eye or both eye cataract surgery by 3 ophthalmologists practicing at a university hospital. Patients were interviewed. and clinical data were obtained. Doctors were questioned with self-entered questionnaire forms. Medical record was examined to understand surgery process. The survey was conducted at 1-2 days before cataract surgery. Results : We used following measures : 7 visual function indexes, global measures of patients' trouble and satisfaction with vision, and best-corrected visual acuity(VA) in each eye. 7 visual function indexes showed a high internal consistency reliability (Cronbach's alpha coefficients ${\geq}$ 0.86). The better visual acuity(operated eye, better eye), the higher patient satisfaction with vision, the lower symptom score, the lower patient trouble with vision was correlated with preoperative visual function index scores. Among 7 indexes, VF-12 with the exclusion of 2 items drivings from VF-14 is a high Cronbach's alpha coefficient and correlation coefficient and the highest $R^2$. Conclusion : We conclude that VF-12 is reliable and valid in Korea. So we suggest that in Korea, all items of VF-14, the visual function index, which is in use internationally, ought to be surveyed and VF-12 which has been excluded by 2 items of drivings from VF-14 ought to be used for analysis.
