SWAT model is applied to simulate rainfall-runoff and pollutant loadings in the Nakdong River basin as the condition for extreme droughts and floods. The year 1994 and 2002 are chosen as the drought and flood year, respectively, through the analysis of past rainfall data for 30 years. The simulation results show decreases in both runoff and pollutant loadings for the drought year but increases for the flood year. However, the pollutant loadings on some upper sub-basins increase for drought year due to highly-regulated dam discharge and soil moisture change. Collectively, extreme droughts and floods have negative impacts on water quality, showing elevated SS loadings during wet season and concentrated T-P concentrations during low flow season. The extent of these impacts is highly influenced by antecedent dry days and precipitation patterns.

For a coastal or harbor structure design, one of the most important environmental factors is the appropriate design wave condition. Especially, the information of deepwater wave height distribution is essential for reliability design. In this paper, a set of deep water wave data obtained from KORDI(2003) were analyzed for extreme wave heights. These wave data at 67 stations off the Korean coast from 1979 to 1998 were arranged in the 16 directions. The probability distributions considered in this research were the Weibull, the Gumbel, the Log-pearson Type-III, and Lognormal distribution. For each of these distributions, three parameter estimation methods, i.e. the method of moments, maximum likelihood and probability weighted moments, were applied. Chi-square and Kolmogorov-Smirnov goodness-of-fit tests were performed, and the assumed distribution was accepted at the confidence level 95%. Gumbel distribution which best fits to the 67 station was selected as the most probable parent distribution, and optimally estimated parameters and 50 year design wave heights were presented.
Suppose that n is a positive integer. For any real number $\alpha$($\beta$ resp.) with $\alpha$ < 1 ($\beta$ > 1 resp.), let $K^{(n)}(\alpha)$ ($K^{(n)}(\beta)$ resp.) be the class of analytic functions in the unit disk $\mathbb{D}$ with f(0) = f'(0) = $\cdots$ = $f^{(n-1)}(0)$ = $f^{(n)}(0)-1\;=\;0$, Re($\frac{zf^{n+1}(z)}{f^{(n)}(z)}+1$) > $\alpha$ (Re($\frac{zf^{n+1}(z)}{f^{(n)}(z)}+1$) < $\beta$ resp.) in $\mathbb{D}$, and for any ${\lambda}\;{\in}\;\bar{\mathbb{D}}$, let $K^{(n)}({\alpha},\;{\lambda})$$K^{(n)}({\beta},\;{\lambda})$ resp.) denote a subclass of $K^{(n)}(\alpha)$ ($K^{(n)}(\beta)$ resp.) whose elements satisfy some condition about derivatives. For any fixed $z_0\;{\in}\;\mathbb{D}$, we shall determine the two regions of variability $V^{(n)}(z_0,\;{\alpha})$, ($V^{(n)}(z_0,\;{\beta})$ resp.) and $V^{(n)}(z_0,\;{\alpha},\;{\lambda})$ ($V^{(n)}(z_0,\;{\beta},\;{\lambda})$ resp.). Also we shall determine the extreme points of the families of analytic functions which satisfy $f(\mathbb{D})\;{\subset}\;V^{(n)}(z_0,\;{\alpha})$ ($f(\mathbb{D})\;{\subset}\;V^{(n)}(z_0,\;{\beta})$ resp.) when f ranges over the classes $K^{(n)}(\alpha)$ ($K^{(n)(\beta)$ resp.) and $K^{(n)}({\alpha},\;{\lambda})$ ($K^{(n)}({\beta},\;{\lambda})$ resp.), respectively.

EST has been applied to the East Coast to estimate extreme sea levels. Surge heights induced by 51 typhoons which have occurred last 60 years were calculated by ADCIRC model. The training set which is consist of surge heights by both typhoon and monsoon was constructed. The maximum surge height of the year excluding the one by typhoon is considered to be the surge height by monsoon. High/low tide conditions and spring/neap tide conditions were considered for constructing input vectors of typhoon and monsoon, respectively. The annual tide is also considered in response vectors for each case. The result is in accord with Jeong et al. (2008), which implies validity of the present study.
Significant costs to the public and private sectors due to recent extreme wind events have motivated the need for systematic post-hurricane damage data collection and analysis. Current post disaster data are collected by many different interested groups such as government agencies, voluntary disaster relief agencies, representatives of media companies, academicians and companies in the private sector. Each group has an interest in a particular type of data. However, members of each group collect data using different techniques. This disparity in data is not conducive to quantifying damage data and, therefore, inhibits the statistical and spatial description of damage and comparisons of damage among different extreme wind events. The data collection does not allow comparisons of data or results of analyses within a group and also prohibits comparison of damage data and information among different groups. Typically, analyses of data from a given event lead to different conclusion depending upon the definition of damage used by individual investigators and the type of data collected making it difficult for members of groups to compare the results of their analyses with a common language and basis. A formal method of data collection and analysis-within any single group-would allow comparisons to be made among different individuals, hazardous events and eventually among different groups, thus facilitating the management and reduction of damage due to future disaster. This research introduces a definition of damage to single family dwellings, and a common method of data collection and analysis suited for groups interested in regional characterization of damage. The current state-of-data is presented and a method for data collection is recommended based on these existing data collection methods. A fixed-scale damage index is proposed to consider the damage to a dwelling's feature. Finally, the damage index is applied to three dwellings damaged by Hurricane Iniki (1992). The damage index reflects the reduced functionality of a structure as a single family detached dwelling and provides a means to evaluate regional damage due to a single event or to compare damage due to events of different severity. Evaluation of the damage index and the data available support recommendation for future data collection efforts.
Water supply is continuously suffering from frequent droughts under climate change, and such extreme events are expected to become more frequent due to climate change. In this study, the decision scaling method was introduced to evaluate the drought vulnerability under future climate change in a wider range. As a result, the water supply reliability of the Boryeong Dam ranged from 95.80% to 98.13% to the condition of the aqueduct which was constructed at the Boryeong Dam. Furthermore, the Boryeong Dam was discovered to be vulnerable under climate change scenarios. Hence, genetic algorithm-based hedging rules were developed to evaluate the reduction effect of drought vulnerability. Moreover, three demand scenarios (high, standard, and low demand) were also considered to reflect the future socio-economic change in the Boryeong Dam. By analyzing quantitative reliability and the probability of extreme drought occurrence under 5% of the water storage rate, all hedging rules demonstrated that they were superior in preparing for extreme drought under low-demand scenarios.
Producing extremely stable high temperature and pressure condition is crucial in order to synthesize novel materials with various functions and to investigate their static and dynamic properties. Already a high pressure in the Mbar range, which is necessary to make novel materials, can be acquired by using a Diamond Anvil Cell (DAC), In this study, a laser-heating system combined with the DAC was designed and installed using two 1064-nm, 100-W fiber lasers on different sides of the DAC to heat the sample and three spectrometers to measure the temperature, pressure, and Raman spectra. A stainless-steel gasket, which is generally used as a sample chamber in high-pressure experiments, was heated to make a thermal radiation source, and the temperature of the heated gasket was obtained by measuring the spectrum of the radiation. By applying this technique, we were able to make various materials and to investigate their physical properties under extreme conditions.
Due to the reduction of bond strength resulting from the high corrosion level of reinforcing bars, influence of this reduction on flexural capacity of reinforced concrete (RC) beam should be considered. An extreme case is considered, where bond strength is complete lost and/or the tensile steel are exposed due to heavy corrosion over a fraction of the beam length. A compatibility condition of deformations of the RC beam with partially unbonded length is proposed. Flexural capacity of this kind of RC beam is predicted by combining the proposed compatibility condition of deformations with equilibrium condition of forces. Comparison between the model's predictions with the experimental results published in the literature shows the practicability of the proposed model. Finally, influence of some parameters on the flexural capacity of RC beam with partially unbonded length is discussed. It is concluded that the flexural capacity of the beam may not be influenced by the completely loss of bond of the whole beam span as long as the tensile steel can yield; whether or not the reduction of the flexural capacity of the beam resulting from the loss of bond over certain length may occur depends on the detailed parameters of the given beam.

This case study refers to turbine-generator with retrofitted turbine rotor. Vibration problem occurring after the retrofit was mainly due to high vibration from exciter side. However, repeated test run and operation during scheduled maintenance caused high vibration from generator bearing, and post-overhaul test run before turbine vibration correction caused oil whip on the bearing. This case study shows how to analyze vibration condition of high turbine generator vibration detected during the post-overhaul test run and vibration condition of offline and online data to reflect it on establishing maintenance schedule and overhaul correction procedure. Vibration data could be acquired during steady load operation or even with varying speed and load. Each data is important for machinery condition evaluation. This case study shows that the vibration data during extreme condition is the key factor in analysis, which helps to find the machinery problem.
