  • Fire extinguishing composite materials based on low-viscosity epoxy resin (EP) and containing 50 wt% of encapsulated fire extinguishing agent (EFA) have been studied. The positive effect of the EP on the kinetics and temperature of the EFA decapsulation was established. The EP increases the decapsulation temperature of the EFA from 130 ℃ to 155 ℃ and changes the kinetics of the decapsulation. The epoxy matrix increases the thermal stability of the EFA more than 3.9 times compared to that of the pure EFA. The protective effect of the EP on the storage stability of the EFA was validated. The mass loss of EP-containing EFA at 60 ℃ and 80% humidity over 96 h is 0.4%. The mass loss of pure EFA under the same conditions is 15%. A similar effect was observed under ultraviolet radiation: the EP-containing EFA loses 0.8% at pure EFA mass of 6%. The testing of alternative polymer matrixes has been considered.

  • Fuel or oil which is leaked into the aircraft engine bay can make a fire when it is contacted to the engine surface of hot temperature. In order to avoid fire, the fire extinguish system should be designed so that the extinguishing agent is quickly injected and its concentration keeps higher in the fire protection region. FAA requires that the extinguishing agent injected within the fire protection region should be sustained longer than 0.5 second on keeping a higher concentration than 6%. For developing a fire protection system satisfying the FAA regulation, numerical and experimental studies for the injection time and the concentration of the extinguishing agent were conducted. These results showed similar trend for the injection time or concentration, but the data acquisition was delayed due to the response of the sensors in the experiment.

  • Effective way of cooking oil fire extinguishment is using water mist system which has cooling and smothering effects. Low pressure water mist system has advantage because it is compatible with existing sprinkler systems. To increase the effectiveness of low pressure water mist system, additives can be used which increase the momentum of water particle and the chemical effect. In this experiment, aqueous film forming form(AFFF) agent is used as additive and the effect of additive concentration and water pressure are experimented. For the extinguishment of cooking oil fire such as soybean and olive oils, AFFF agent is effective and can decrease the fire extinguishing time and water consumption.

  • In this research, an environmental-friendly foam extinguisher was newly developed using a natural surfactant as its composition. Two criteria were applied to verify its extinguishing performance and environmental attraction. One is unit 2 model by "Standards of Model Approval and Inspection Technology for Portable Fire Extinguishers" presented in Korea Fire Equipment Inspection Corporation. The other is Terrestrial Plants, Growth Test and Fish, Acute Toxicity Test presented in Korea Institute of Toxicology(Korea Research Institute of Chemical Technology). Test results showed that the extinguishing performance was 5 unit of general fire Class A, the $LC_{50}$ by germination was 75(g/kg) and the $EC_{50}$ by growth was 62(g/kg) through Terrestrial Plants, Growth Test, and also the toxicity was 6658 ppm in Fish, Acute Toxicity Test. The numerical values were highly evaluated than other fire extinguishing agents being commercialized in domestic. The results also showed suitably in basic physical properties and anti-corrosion properties for making use of fire extinguishing agent.

  • The most important thing for NOVEC gas fire extinguishing equipment is to release NOVEC gas, which contained in the extinguishing container, to the safety section by the time appointed. For this matter, it is significant to decide arrangement and size of the proper piping equipment. This study has developed the design methodology of NOVEC gas fire extinguishing equipment in use of pipe network analysis techniques. Based on the design methodology, each design coefficient is chosen. It is found that the calculated result, which is 6.498 seconds, has been counted within the 10 seconds limit, which is fairly satisfied with extinguishing releasing time based on the developed methodology. At that time, the pressure loss is 21.09bar.

  • Dry water is a core-shell structured powder which comprises a very fine water core covered with hydrophobic silica particles. Recently, the dry water has attracted attention as a new type of fire extinguishing agents. However, characteristics of the dry water as a fire extinguishing agent have not been revealed until now. To our best knowledge, this is the first work to uncover effects of particle size of the dry water on the fire extinguishing performance. Pristine dry water, which has heterogeneous particle size distribution, was carefully separated by sieving method into three fractions which were a small size (ca. $110{\mu}m$) fraction, a medium size (ca. $220{\mu}m$) fraction and a large size (ca. $400{\mu}m$) fraction. Microscopic observations confirmed the effective separation of dry water's particle size. In extinguishing tests of wood cribs fire, the medium size dry water showed most excellent fire extinguishing performance, as compared to other dry waters having small (ca. $110{\mu}m$) and large (ca. $400{\mu}m$) particle size. The good performance of the medium size (ca. $220{\mu}m$) dry water may be attributed to the balance between cooling effect of the water core and smothering effect of the silica particles. It is also revealed that small size dry water has poor flowability than large size dry water.

  • The objective of the present work is to examine the cooling effect of a water fire extinguishing agent containing NaBr(30%, w/w). The carbon steel and teflon were used as a hot solid. The temperature on the hot solid surface ranged from $70^{\circ}c$ to $116^{\circ}c$ and water droplet size was 2.6 mm in the experiments. It is suggested that regardless of the hot solid material, the indepth temperature of the case of NaBr solution is lower than that of pure water and the variation of indepth temperature of teflon is higher than that of carbon steel. Regardless of the hot solid material, the time averaged heat flux of the case of pure water is higher than that of NaBr solution. the apparent evaporation time of the case of pure water is shorter than that of NaBr solution.

  • The AFFF(Aqueous Film Forming Foam : 3M Company's Light Water) agent are synthetic compounds that foams which are similar to those produced by protein based materials. The foam extinguishing agent was used In the extinguisher was the AFFF agent. We sought, however, to make other foams by using halon 1301 (CF$_3$Br) and halon alternatives, such as HCFC Blend A($CHCIF_2$ 82%, $CF_3$CHCIF 9.5%m $C_{10}$$H_{16}$ 3.75%), HFC-227ea ($CF_3$ $CHFCF_3$) We selected these alternatives instead of air in order to raise the expansion ratio of the AFFF agent. By these means we discovered that it is possible to increase the expansion ratio of the AFFF agent up to 44:1 and up to 24:1 when HFC-227ea was used as a halon alternatives. Therefore our new foam extinguishing agents can be used in a portable extinguish agents can be used in a portable extinguishers.

  • Carbon dioxide($CO_2$) agent, which has more safely extinguished fire than any other gaseous fire extinguishing agents, has been widely used in various protected enclosures and types of fires. According to the concept of performance-based design(PBD). $CO_2$ extinguishing system to be designed is needed to be evaluated for the performance of fire suppression with possible fire scenarios in an enclosure. In this paper, CFD simulations were carried out to study the effects of opening area on the performance of $CO_2$ extinguishing system and the flow characteristics in the machine room of $100m^3$ in which kerosene spill fire happened. This study showed that time of fire suppression increased linearly in proportion to the size of opening area, and fires for each model were completely suppressed prior to the end of discharge of $CO_2$ agent. It was shown that mass flow rate through opening was influenced by the combined effects of heat release rate of fire and discharge of $CO_2$ agent. After $CO_2$ agent was completely discharged, oxygen concentrations in enclosures for each model were lower than the limit concentration of combustion.

  • A basic sprinkler system is a fire extinguishing system that can be easily installed in a fire-vulnerable place such as a publicly used establishments. However, the publicly used establishments are not only complicated in structure, but also have a large amount of flammable interior materials, and the users are not normally in a normal state, which is a very dangerous fire-fighting object. Therefore, due to the low fire extinguishing performance of the basic sprinkler system installed in the publicly used establishments, the fire suppression control can not be performed quickly in case of fire, which may increase the life and property damage. In this study, the cases of quantitative changes of extinguishing water used in basic sprinkler system and the cases of addition of additives such as wetting agents, reinforced agents to improve extinguishing performance were compared. Experimental results showed that the extinguishing performance was improved as the quantity of extinguishing water increase and the reinforced agents showed similar performance to that of 60% increase in the amount of extinguishing water. The cooling time to $200^{\circ}C$ and oxygen concentration were improved up to 14.3% and 34.5%, respectively. In the case of using the wetting agent, the cooling time to $200^{\circ}C$ and oxygen concentration did not show any significant improvement, but showed the effect of preventing deep seated fire. In order to prevent loss of life and property, it is necessary to improve the performance of the basic sprinkler system by increasing amount of extinguishing water or using additives like reinforced agents.
