CdS thin film was prepared on glass substrate by chemical bath deposition in an alkaline solution. The optical properties of CdS thin film were investigated using spectroscopic ellipsometry. The real (${\varepsilon}_1$) and imaginary (${\varepsilon}_2$) parts of the complex dielectric function ${\varepsilon}(E)={\varepsilon}_1(E)+i{\varepsilon}_2(E)$, the refractive index n(E), and the extinction coefficient k(E) of CdS thin film were obtained from spectroscopic ellipsometry. The normal-incidence reflectivity R(E) and absorption coefficient ${\alpha}(E)$ of CdS thin film were obtained using the refractive index and extinction coefficient. The critical points $E_0$ and $E_1$ of CdS thin film were shown in spectra of the dielectric function and optical constants of refractive index, extinction coefficient, normal-incidence reflectivity, and absorption coefficient. The dispersion of refractive index was analyzed by the Wemple-DiDomenico single-oscillator model.
Explicit expressions for the transmission pseudo-ellipsometric constants and transmittance of a semi-transparent glass substrate coated with thin films are presented to determine the optical constants of a very weakly absorbing thin film coated on a glass substrate. The intensity of the multiply reflected light inside the semi-transparent substrate is superposed incoherently and the light absorption by the substrate is properly treated, so that modeling analysis of thin films coated on a semi-transparent substrate can be performed with increased accuracy. The extinction coefficient derived from transmittance analysis is compared to that from ellipsometric analysis in the weakly absorbing region, and the difference between the two extinction coefficients is discussed in relation to the sensitivities of the transmittance and ellipsometric constants. This transmittance analysis, together with ellipsometric analysis, is applied to a glass substrate coated with a SiN thin film, and it is shown that the thickness and complex refractive index of the SiN thin film can be determined accurately, even though the extinction coefficient is very small.

In this work, thermal evaporation system was employed to deposit thin films of SiC on glass substrates in order to determine the parameters of them. Measurements included transmission, absorption, Seebak effect, resistivity and conductivity, absorption coefficient, type of energy band-gap, extinction coefficient as functions of photon energy and the effect of increasing film thickness on transmittance. Results explained that SiC thin film is an n-type semiconductor of indirect energy band-gap of ${\sim}3eV$, cut-off wavelength of 448nm, absorption coefficient of $3.4395{\times}10^{4}cm^{-1}$ and extinction coefficient of 0.154. The experimental measured values are in good agreement with the typical values of SiC thin films prepared by other advanced deposition techniques.
Relative light intensity was observed with underwater illuminometer (Cs Photoelectric cell, glass window) at the mouth of Yeong-il Bay, and relative vertical clearness and extinction coefficient were calculated from the relative light intensity data. Relationship between extinction coefficient and transparency in this region is also shown.

Purpose: Ti thin films were deposited on slide glass and CR-39 lenses using small magnetron sputtering apparatus to of Ti thin films. Methods: The thickness of Ti thin films were measured by cross section SEM, the transmittance and reflectance of them were obtained using spectrophotometer, the refractive index and extinction of them were obtained from VASE data. Results: The transmittances of Ti thin films with 60 nm, 120 nm, 140 nm thickness were a little change within the visual region from 400 nm to 750 nm, but were increased a little amount at near 400 nm. The transmittance of 60 nm, 120 nm, 140 nm Ti thickness in d-line was 30%, 25%, 20%, respectively. Also, it was shown that the refractive indices and extinction coefficients of the Ti thin films obtained from VASE were similar to those of Ti thin film offered macleod program. Conclusions: Ti films on CR-39 with these transmittances were available for sunglass lens. It was indicated that the refractive indices and extinction coefficients of the Ti thin films were decreased with the thickness of Ti thin film, for the thickness of Ti thin films was due to very thin.

The dielectric and optical properties of GaInZnO (GIZO), HfInZnO (HIZO) and InZnO (IZO) thin films on glass by RF magnetron sputtering method were investiged using reflection electron energy loss spectroscopy (REELS). The band gap was estimated from the onset values of REELS spectra. The band gaps of GIZO, HIZO and IZO thin films are 3.1 eV, 3.5 eV and 3.0 eV, respectively, Hf and Ga incorporated into IZO results in an increase in the energy band gap of IZO by 0.5 eV and 0.1 eV. The dielectric functions were determined by comparing the effective cross section determined from experimental REELS with a rigorous model calculation based on the dielectric response theory, using available software package, good agreement between the experimental and fitting results gives confidence in the accuracy of the determined dielectric function. The main peak of Energy Loss Function (ELF) obtained from IZO shows at 18.42 eV, which shifted to 19.43 eV and 18.15 eV for GIZO and HIZO respectively, because indicates the corporation of cation Ga and Hf in the composition. The optical properties represented by the dielectric function e, the refractive index n, the extinction coefficient k, and the transmission coefficient, T of HIZO and IZO thin films were determined from a quantitative analysis of REELS. The transmission coefficient was increased to 93% and decreased to 87% in the visible region with the incorporation of Hf and Ga in the IZO compound.
We deposited thin films of organic light-emitting-material $Alq_3$(alumina quinoline) on silicon and slide-glass substrates using thermal evaporation method, and measured spectra of ellipsometry angles ${\Delta}$ and ${\Psi}$ in the photon-energy range of 1.5~5.0 eV using a variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometer. The optical constants, refractive index and extinction coefficient, of $Alq_3$ were determined via the dispersion parameters extracted from the curve-fitting process based on Jellison-Modine dispersion function. The reliability of determined optical constants were verified through the comparison of measured and simulated transmittance curves and the good agreement between simulated absorption-coefficient curves and absorbance spectra measured using a spectrophotometer.

The spectroscopic ellipsometric constants are analyzed to determine the thickness and the complex refractive index of a film coated on a semi-transparent substrate, with the reflection from the backside of the substrate properly considered. Expressions representing the effect of the backside reflection on ellipsometric constants are derived using the thickness and the complex refractive index of the substrate. The thickness and the complex refractive of an ITO thin film coated on a glass substrate are obtained by using this method. The results agree quite well with the ones obtained by following the conventional modeling procedure where the backside reflection is neglected during ellipsometric measurement and analysis.
We deposited thin films of ZnS(Zinc Sulphide), in which was used antireflection coating material of glasses-lens on silicon and slide-glass substrates using spin coating method, and measured spectra of ellipsometry angles ${\Delta}$ and ${\Psi}$ in the photon-energy range of 1.5~5.0 eV using a variable angle spectroscopic ellipsometer. The optical constants, refractive index and extinction coefficient, of ZnS were determined via the dispersion parameters extracted from the curve-fitting process based on Jellison-Modine dispersion function.
We prepared the side-chain type nonlinear optical NPP(N-(6-nitrophenyl)-(L)-prolinol) polymer films by spin coating method. Ellipsometric spectra were in situ collected by using spectroscopic phase modulated ellipsometer while the NPP polymer films were being corona poled at the temperature above glass transition. We calculated film thickness and the refractive index dispersion by modeling the spectro-ellipsometry data in transparent region. We also calculated the refractive index and the extinction coefficient of the polymer films by numerically inverting the spectro-ellipsometry data in absorbing region, while the previously determined film thickness was used. The independently determined extinction coefficient spectra from the analysis of transmission spectra were compared with those by spectro-ellipsometry and they showed an excellent agreement with each other. From the analysis of the complex refractive index change of the NPP polymer thin films induced by the corona poling, we could determine the vertical complex refractive index and the horizontal complex refractive index separately. Using the volume fraction of the vertical component f⊥, the degree of poling of poled NPP polymer films was quantitatively addressed. It is suggested that the present method can be used to quantitatively address the degree of poling in an absolute manner and to depth profile the poled fraction of thick polymer films. It will be useful to understand the structural change of polymer films and hence the poling mechanism during the poling process.
