  • This study was conducted to explore which pollen type could be an effective pollen source for self-incompatible 'Niitaka' pear (Pyrus pyrifolia Nakai), when different pollinizers were to be applied. The pollens of five different pears with similar flowering times were applied to bagged 'Niitaka' flowers grown in Cheonan city, Korea. Pollen types used were of different origins including Korean pears ('Wonhwang' and 'Chuhwangbae'), Japanese pears ('Chojuuro' and 'Okusankichi'), and Chinese pear ('Yali'). Results show that the amount of pollen produced by flowers of each cultivar was the largest in Korean pear 'Wonhwang' (234 g/100 flowers) and the smallest in Japanese pear 'Okusankichi' (126 g/100 flowers). A high proportion of large fruits (> 600 g), 71.4% of total production, was found in the fruits treated with 'Yali' pollen. However, these fruits showed an unfavorable external appearance. Based on individual fruit width differences, 'Chojuuro' treatment produced the smallest difference in fruit diameters (3.2 mm) and 'Yali' treatment' gave the largest (4.8 mm). Also, the difference in fruit length was the largest in 'Yali' (7.5 mm), which also produced the most uneven fruits among the pollinizers used. Meanwhile, the use of pollens of 'Wonhwang' and 'Chuhwangbae' improved productivity by increasing the fruit shape index and the ratio of bigger fruits in total production. Moreover, those pollens also decreased the development of lenticels on fruit skins which gave them a smoother appearance.

  • Ultrasonic metal welding, unlike the conventional welding techniques, does not require an external heat source, welding rod, or filler metal. Therefore, ultrasonic metal welding is not only economical but also environment-friendly, and hence, it has been receiving much attention. In ultrasonic welding, heat is generated because of the plastic deformation and the friction between both surfaces of the welded materials. It is important to identify the heat-affected zone by measuring the temperature generated at the weld. In this study, the effects of the welding pressure, welding time, and vibration amplitude on the temperature distribution in the weld were evaluated by performing a transient thermal analysis of the heat generated during ultrasonic metal welding. The experimental results indicated that the temperature of the weld tends to increase with the welding time and vibration amplitude. However, an increase in the pressure does not affect the temperature of the weld largely.

  • The heat exchange between the Borehole Heat Exchanger(BHE) and the surrounding ground depends directly on ground thermal conductivity k at the certain site. The k is thus a key parameter in designing BHE and coupled geothermal heat pump systems. Currently, although a thermal hydraulic Response Test(TRT) is mostly used in practice, the thermal hydraulic TRT needs additional power and is generally time-consuming. A new, simple wireless probe for hi-speed k determination was introduced in this paper. This technique using a wireless probe is less time-consuming and requires no external source of energy for measurement and predicts local thermal properties by measuring soil temperatures along the depth. Measured temperature data along the depth was analyzed. As a result, the electronic wireless probe can replace the conventional hydraulic TRT method after carrying out the additional research on a lot of local heat flow, etc.

  • The purpose of this research is to compare and analyze the advanced speed of ships with different rudder controller in wavy condition by using a simulation. The commercial simulation tool named AQWA is used to develop the simulation of ship which has 3 degree of freedom. The nonlinear hydrodynamic force acting on hull, the propeller thrust and the rudder force are calculated by the additional subroutine which interlock with the commercial simulation tool, and the regular wave is used as the source of the external force for the simulation. Rudder rotational velocity and autopilot coefficients vary to make the different rudder controller. An advanced speed of ships depending on the rudder controller is analyzed after the autopilot simulations.

  • Recent studies indicate that mitochondria are an important source of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the spinal dorsal horn. In our previous study, application of malate, a mitochondrial electron transport complex I substrate, induced a membrane depolarization, which was inhibited by pretreatment with ROS scavengers. In the present study, we used patch clamp recording in the substantia geletinosa (SG) neurons of spinal slices, to investigate the cellular mechanism of mitochondrial ROS on neuronal excitability. DNQX (an AMPA receptor antagonist) and AP5 (an NMDA receptor antagonist) decreased the malate-induced depolarization. In an external calcium free solution and addition of tetrodotoxin (TTX) for blockade of synaptic transmission, the malate-induced depolarization remained unchanged. In the presence of DNQX, AP5 and AP3 (a group I metabotropic glutamate receptor (mGluR) antagonist), glutamate depolarized the membrane potential, which was suppressed by PBN. However, oligomycin (a mitochondrial ATP synthase inhibitor) or PPADS (a P2 receptor inhibitor) did not affect the substrates-induced depolarization. These results suggest that mitochondrial substrate-induced ROS in SG neuron directly acts on the postsynaptic neuron, therefore increasing the ion influx via glutamate receptors.

  • Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) generates image features widely used to match objects in different images. Previous work on hardware-based SIFT implementation requires excessive internal memory and hardware logic [1]. In this paper, a new hardware organization is proposed to implement SIFT with less memory and hardware cost than the previous work. To this end, a parallel Gaussian filter bank is adopted to eliminate the buffers that store intermediate results because parallel operations allow all intermediate results available at the same time. Furthermore, the processing order is changed from the raster-scan order to the block-by-block order so that the line buffer size storing the source image is also reduced. These techniques trade the reduction of memory size with a slight increase of the execution time and external memory bandwidth. As a result, the memory size is reduced by 94.4%. The proposed hardware for SIFT implementation includes the Descriptor generation block, which is omitted in the previous work [1]. The addition of the hardwired descriptor generation improves the computation speed by about 30 times when compared with the previous work.

  • In the fast data communication system, synchronized by a clock source, the loss of data will often occur due to several reasons as a differential routing path between data and clock, a differential propagation delay of components or an unstable phase of clock and data by external noise. In this paper, we describe the ASIC implementation of the data compensation circuit which can detect the data loss from above problems and recovery to original data with stable synchronization. Especially it supports a strong stability and a good BER in the communication system for fast data transfer as optic area. This circuit is implemented by Verilog HDL and available to the digital ASIC implementations related to fast data transfer.

  • The rise of crowdsourcing and web 2.0 opens plenty of opportunities for companies who want to exploit external sources of ideas for internal innovation. Utilization of crowdsourcing for product design and development has been attracting the attention of both enterprises and researchers. Many cases of implementation of crowdsourcing for product design and development such as: Threadless, FIAT Mio, Lego online Factory, etc., have made crowdsourcing a promising alternative source of innovative power. Although crowdsourcing gained access due to improved Internet access and web 2.0, it is little understood how the crowd, with respect to participation, behaves for any crowdsourcing project. To investigate this, we conducted an experiment on a real crowd of engineering related individuals to figure out the crowd participation pattern for various product design and development phases of a new product development project. The experiment results give a quantitative view of the participation of the crowd (i.e., crowd participation pattern) in various phases of a product design and development process that utilizes crowdsourcing, provide a practical guidance for companies to harness the power of the crowd sensibly, and provide experimental data for further research in this field.

  • LCD needs a backlight that is a light source as a photodetector that has a light modulation function and CCFL is used usually. Inverter that composes using existent winding transformer operates multi lamps, however, this efficiency falls by losses of core or winding and volume or weight increases or there is danger of fire by overheating. In order to solve these problems, a multi lamp driving Inverter using PT is composed according to the design guideline in this paper. We conformed whether the multi lamp drive method using EEFL that a current burden is less in applicable to piezoelectric inverter, and used the method that connect two piezoelectric transformers by parallel to an inverter.

  • The charged particle type display is a kind of the reflectivity type display and shows an image by absorption and reflection of external light source, which has keep an image without additional electric power because of bistability. In this paper, we made a device whose cell gap is $56\;{\mu}m$ and also analyzed driving and memory characteristics by applied driving voltages. As a result, we found that the driving voltage and memory effect depend on q/m(charge to mass ratio) of charged particle. In this case of breakdown voltage, the devices showed degradation of reflectivity and memory effect due to irregular movement of overcharged particles. In addition, contrast ratio of the device varies with memory effect. Thus, we consider that device needs uniform q/m for improvement of electric and optical properties and memory effect.
