수출기업의 혁신활동, 혁신성과, 경영성과 간의 구조적 관계에 관한 연구 (A study on the Structural Relationship among Innovation Activity, Innovation Performance, and Business Performance of Export Firms)

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the relationship among innovation activities, innovation performance, and management performance of export firms. I first undertake a review of previous studies related to innovation activity, innovation performance, and export firms' innovation. Based on this, I set up a research model and hypotheses. First, The innovation activity is classified into product innovation activity, process innovation activity, and administrative innovation activity. Innovation performance is divided into product quality improvement and cost reduction. And the business performance is regarded as financial performance of export's firms. This study examined whether innovation activity affect innovation performance such as product quality improvement and cost reduction. In addition, I examined whether these innovation performance affects business performance (financial performance). To achieve this, a total of 368 questionnaires are used in this study and PLS (Partial Least Square) was used to analyze structural equation. As a result, this study shows that product innovation activity have a positive effect on product quality improvement, and process innovation activity also have a positive effect on product quality improvement. However, it was found that neither product innovation activity nor process innovation activity had an effect on cost reduction. And it was found that administrative innovation did not affect product quality improvement, but had a positive effect on cost reduction. Also, it was found that quality improvement, which is an innovation performance, did not affect the financial performance of export's firms, and cost reduction, which is an innovation performance, had a positive effect on the financial performance of the export's firms.

  • Software export is very important for developing the domain software industry. Up to now, the study related in this issue is not enough even if exports are not activated. In our study, we treated and analyzed the three SME cases that have each successful record in recent years focusing to sales channels establishment and product localization. This study was done by interviewing the marketing directors mainly, and applied email exchanges, phones, and document analyses. Some implications can be addressed for the potential SME software exports. In the perspectives of sales channels building, the trust for product and firm itself is needed to have a good offshore partners. These are required to make the good relationship with partners, brand value's diffusion, and technical competency. As for product localization, the customization is important to meet the needs for local users effectively. So it is desirable to accept the advisory suggestions from the local consulting experts or representative customers. And the joint export strategy using the platform by linking some related products is effective for SME's software product's export.

기업의 정치적 연계와 수출성과의 관련성: 베트남 사례를 중심으로 (Are Politically Connected Firms More Likely to Export? Evidence from Vietnam)

  • Political connections may facilitate firms' exporting activities, particularly in developing countries, because politically connected firms may be more likely to receive informational and financial support, allowing them to overcome barriers to export. We test this hypothesis using a unique, firm-level dataset from traditional apparel and textile clusters in the Red River Delta Region in Northern Vietnam. We find that political connection of certain types increases the chance of receiving valuable information or financial support from the government. Moreover, those firms that have access to government information have higher chances of being direct exporters. However, firms that receive financial support from the government are not necessarily engaged in exporting activities. Although politically connected firms are more willing to export, they do not necessarily engage in more exporting activities than firms without such connections. These results suggest that the misallocation of information and financial resources to politically connected but insufficiently productive firms leads to a failure to promote exporting activities. In contrast, political connection increases the chance of importing materials and parts, possibly because high productivity is necessary for exporting, but not for importing.

우리나라 제조업 기업의 수출중단 결정요인 분석 (Determinants of a Firm's Exit from Exporting: Evidence from Korean Manufacturing Firms)

  • 본 연구는 2006~2014년 통계청의 기업활동조사 자료를 이용하여 우리나라 제조업 기업의 수출중단 결정요인을 실증적으로 분석하였다. 이를 위해 생존분석 기법인 Complementary Log-Log 모형을 통해 우리나라 제조업 수출기업의 수출중단 가능성에 기업 및 산업 특성과 거시경제 변수들이 미치는 영향을 추정하였다. 분석결과, 기업 특성인 고용규모, 자본집약도, 무형자산 소유여부, 외국인 소유여부와 산업 특성인 신규기업의 고용대체율 등이 수출중단 가능성에 유의한 영향을 미치며, 거시변수 중 세계수요 증가, 국내수요 감소가 수출기업의 수출중단 가능성을 유의하게 감소시키는 반면, 환율의 영향은 유의하지 않은 것으로 추정되었다. 또한, 시장금리가 상승하면 금융시장 자금조달여건이 불리해짐에 따라 수출기업의 수출중단 가능성이 커지며, 부채비율이 높은 기업이 이러한 금융여건의 영향을 더욱 크게 받는 것으로 나타났다. 한편, 수출 주력산업인 경우 생산성이 높을수록 수출기업의 수출 중단 가능성이 감소하는 것으로 분석되었다. 본 연구결과는 기업 및 산업 특성과 거시 실물 변수 및 금융여건이 수출중단에 복합적으로 영향을 미치고 있음을 보여준다. 또한, 수출 주력산업 내 기업들의 생산성 제고와 기업의 재무건전성 향상이 수출기업들의 수출중단 가능성을 감소시키는 방향으로 작용할 수 있음을 시사한다.

외부지식탐색이 혁신속도에 미치는 영향: 수출성과의 조절효과를 중심으로 (The Effect of External Knowledge Search on Innovation Speed: Focusing on the Moderation Effect of Export Performance)

  • 본 연구는 기업이 지식을 창출하고 혁신에 이르기 위해 노력하는 방안으로써 외부지식탐색을 제시하고 외부지식탐색의 폭과 깊이를 중심으로 혁신속도와의 관계를 살펴보았다. 국내시장에서 기업이 외부지식탐색이 가지는 루틴의 한계를 극복하기 위한 노력의 일환으로 해외시장으로 진출하고자 하는 노력을 조절효과로 살펴보았다. 기존연구에서는 외부지식탐색이 대부분 단일국가 혹은 유사 산업 간에서 나타나는 여러 가지 효과를 살펴보았다면, 본 연구는 이를 조금 더 확장하여 시장확대 개념을 도입해 그 상호작용을 실증한 것이다. 본 연구에서 사용된 818개의 유효 표본은 STEPI에서 발간하는 혁신조사를 기반으로 하였으며, 실증결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 외부지식탐색의 폭과 깊이는 혁신속도에 긍정적인 영향을 미친다. 둘째, 시장확대효과로써 수출성과는 외부지식탐색의 폭 및 깊이와 함께 상호작용하여 혁신속도에 조절효과를 가진다. 셋째, 젊은 기업일수록 다양한 네트워크를 선호하면서 수출증대효과와 상호작용하며 나이가 많은 기업일수록 심도있는 네트워크를 선호하면서 수출증대와 상호작용하여 혁신속도를 증가시킨다.

Trade Linkage and Transmission of Geopolitical Risks: Evidence from the Peace Progress in 2018

  • Purpose - Using unexpected changes in geopolitical tensions on the Korean peninsula as a quasi-natural experimental setting, we examine whether and how geopolitical risks travel across borders through firm-level imports and exports linkages. We also test whether the effects are driven by either imports or exports and assess whether firms can effectively hedge themselves against geopolitical risks. Design/methodology - We focus on a series of unanticipated geopolitical events taken place in Korea in 2018. Making use of the shocks to geopolitical climate, we identify five milestone events toward peace talks. We employ the event studies methodology. We examine heterogenous firm-level stock price reactions around key event dates depending on firms' exposure to geopolitical risks. As a measure of firms' exposure to geopolitical risks in Korea, we utilize a text-based measure of firm-level trade links. When a firm announces and discusses its purchase of inputs from Korea or sales of outputs to Korea in their annual disclosure filings, we define a firm to have a trade relationship with Korea and have exposure to Korean geopolitical risks. Similarly, we use a measure of a firm's hedging policies based on a firm's textual mention of the use of foreign exchange derivatives in their annual disclosure. Findings - We find that U.S. firms that have direct trade links to Korea gained significantly more value when the intensity of geopolitical risks drops compared to firms without such trade links to Korea. The effects are pronounced for firms purchasing inputs from or selling outputs to Korea. We find that the effectiveness of foreign exchange hedging against geopolitical risks is limited. Originality/value - We document the international transmission of geopolitical uncertainty through trade linkages. Export links as well as import links serve as important nexus of transmission of geopolitical risks across borders. Hedging strategies involving foreign-exchanges derivatives do not seem to insulate firms again geopolitical risks. With the recent movements of localization and reshuffling of the global value chain, our results suggest a significant impact of geopolitical risks in Korea on the construction of the global value chain.

수출벤처기업의 기업가적 지향성, 흡수능력, 전략적 능력 및 기업성과간의 관계 (The Relationships among Entrepreneurial Orientation, Absorptive Capacity, Strategic Capabilities and Performance of Korean Export Venture Firms)

  • 본 연구는 수출벤처기업을 대상으로 기업가적 지향성, 흡수능력, 전략적 능력 및 기업성과간의 관계를 밝히는데 연구목적이 있다. 기존 선행연구를 기초로 기업가적 지향성, 흡수능력, 전략적 능력 및 기업성과간의 관계를 가설로 설정하였고, 이를 검정하기 위해 필요한 자료는 설문조사를 통해 수집하였다. 본 연구모델 검정에는 구조방정식모델인 PLS분석방법을 활용하였다. 실증분석 결과에서 다음과 같은 결과가 도출되었다. 첫째, 기업가적 지향성은 흡수능력에 유의적인 정의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 기업가적 지향성은 전략적 능력인 기술능력, 마케팅능력 및 시장연계능력에 각각 유의적인 정의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 흡수능력은 기술능력, 마케팅능력 및 시장연계능력에 각각 유의적인 정의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 넷째, 전략적 능력 중에서 기술능력과 마케팅능력은 기업성과에 각각 유의적인 정의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 반면, 시장연계능력은 기업성과에 유의적인 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났다.

플랜트 및 건설수출 입찰의 성공 및 실패모델에 관한 연구 (A Study on the Regression Models of Success and Failure of Tenders for Plant and Construction Exports)

  • This paper is to suggest strategic options for improving the export performance of the plant and construction industry. The overall objective of this study is to explore the feasibility of a sustained export performance in the plant and overseas construction industry by an analysis of its international competitiveness and technological competence. The empirical work of this study relates to a chosen sample of Korean and non-Korean firms in the plant and construction industry sector. Primary data was collected through a comprehensive questionnaire survey administered to plant and construction firms in twelve countries, including Korea. The actual number of firms for which full information at a sufficient level of disaggregation was obtained was 62, a response rate of 44.6%. Of these, 42 firms were drawn from Korean plant and construction firms and the remaining 20 firms from 11 other countries. The structure of responding firms by industry shows a total of 29 plant exporters and 33 construction firms. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS statistical technique such as Multiple Regression in order to examine the linear relationship among variables. The findings of the study indicate that export success and failure in plant and construction export markets is determined by firm size and by various qualitative variables. The high export volume (export success) of Plant and construction exporters is more strongly influenced by mutual economic cooperation and number of employees than by sales volume and competent knowledge of the plant and construction markets. It was also found that weak political and diplomatic relation between countries, low sales volume and lack of bid experience have an adverse effect and represent serious barriers to exports.

The Determinants of Distribution of Credit: Evidence from Vietnam

  • Purpose: The issue of access to credit for private enterprises has been given an increased amount of attention given their crucial role in fueling economic growth. Vietnamese small and medium-sized businesses, however, face many obstacles in accessing financing for profitable investment opportunities, with up to 70% unable to access or obtain bank loans. This paper aims to address the factors affecting the credit accessibility of Vietnamese enterprises, and provide further insights of this issue under the new context of Basel II. Research design, data and methodology: We adopt a pooled sections approach to construct a sample of 155 firm observations before and after the implementation of Basel II accord in Vietnam and employing binary logistic regression and interaction terms for data analysis. Results: We find that firm characteristics (export participation, female ownership) and proxies for bank-borrower relationship (deposit, overdraft facility) have significant and positive effects on firm's access to credit. Notably, the sign of interaction coefficient shows that the implementation of Basel II tends to benefit small-sized firms in terms of credit accessibility. Conclusions: The finding further emphasizes the important role of relationship lending in Vietnam's credit market, which is even more critical for small firms when Basel II is universally applied as the new banking standards in the coming years.

중소제조기업의 기업가정신과 수출성과 관계에서 제품차별화 역량의 매개효과 (In Relation to Entrepreneurship and Export Performance of Small and Medium Manufacturing Firm, the Mediating Effect of Product Differentiation Capabilities)

  • 본 연구는 우리나라 중소제조기업의 수출성과 결정요인을 살펴보았다. 우선 기존 연구를 살펴보고, 수출성과 선행요인으로 기업가정신과 제품차별화 역량을 설정하였다. 또한, 수출성과의 선행요인으로서 제품차별화 역량을 기업가정신과 수출성과의 매개요인으로 분석하였다. 이로써, 기업가정신, 제품차별화 역량 그리고 수출성과의 통합적 모형을 구축하고 그 관계를 살펴보는 것을 연구의 목적으로 하였다. 실증분석에서는 국내 중소제조 수출기업 152개 표본에 PLS(Partial Least Square) 분석을 이용하였다. 분석도구는 SmartPLS2.0을 사용하였다. 분석 결과 중소제조기업 기업가의 위험감수성과 혁신성은 제품차별화 역량과 수출성과에 모두 긍정적 영향을 미쳤다. 제품차별화 역량 역시 중소제조 수출기업의 수출성과에 긍정적 영향을 준다는 점을 확인하였다. 매개효과 분석에서는 제품차별화 역량이 기업가정신 중 혁신성과 수출성과 사이에 유의한 매개효과를 나타냈다. 그러나 위험감수성에는 유의한 매개효과를 나타내지 못했다. 이러한 결과는 중소제조 수출기업에 제품차별화 역량이 필요할수록 적극적으로 혁신성향을 추구해야 한다는 점을 시사한다. 즉, 제품차별화를 시도할 때 위험감수성보다 혁신성향을 강조하는 것이 의미가 있음을 보여준다. 이에 본 연구는 제품차별화 역량의 매개효과를 분석한 점에서 동적역량이나 경쟁우위 관점에서 중소제조기업의 수출성과를 살펴보려는 연구에 이론적 시사점을 가진다. 또한, 중소제조 기업 경영자에게는 위험감수성과 혁신성의 역할이 모두 중요하지만, 낯선 환경의 외국시장 경쟁에 필요한 제품차별화 역량에는 혁신성향의 역할에 더 주목해야 한다는 실무적 시사점을 제시한다.
