Wicks play an important role in determining the thermal performance of heat pipes. Foam-type wicks are known to have good potential for enhancing the capillary performance of conventional types of wicks, and this is because of their high porosity and permeability. In this study, we develop an analytic expression for predicting the permeability of a foam-type wick based on extensive numerical work. The proposed correlation is based on the modified Kozeny-Carman's equation, where the Kozeny-Carman coefficient is given as an exponential function of porosity. The proposed correlations are shown to predict the previous experimental results well for an extensive parametric range. The permeability of the foam-type wick is shown to be significantly higher than that of conventional wicks because of their high porosity.

Background: In situ gamma spectrometry has been used to measure environmental radiation, assumptions are usually made about the depth distribution of the radionuclides of interest in the soil. The main limitation of in situ gamma spectrometry lies in determining the depth distribution of radionuclides. The objective of this study is to develop a method for subsurface characterization by in situ measurement. Materials and Methods: The peak to valley method based on the ratio of counting rate between the photoelectric peak and Compton region was applied to identify the depth distribution. The peak to valley method could be applied to establish the relation between the spectrally derived coefficients (Q) with relaxation mass per unit area (${\beta}$) for various depth distribution in soil. The in situ measurement results were verified by MCNP simulation and calculated correlation equation. In order to compare the depth distributions and contamination levels in decommissioning KRR site, in situ measurement and sampling results were compared. Results and Discussion: The in situ measurement results and MCNP simulation results show a good correlation for laboratory measurement. The simulation relationship between Q and source burial for the source layers have exponential relationship for a variety depth distributions. We applied the peak to valley method to contaminated decommissioning KRR site to determine a depth distribution and initial activity without sampling. The observed results has a good correlation, relative error between in situ measurement with sampling result is around 7% for depth distribution and 4% for initial activity. Conclusion: In this study, the vertical activity distribution and initial activity of $^{137}Cs$ could be identifying directly through in situ measurement. Therefore, the peak to valley method demonstrated good potential for assessment of the residual radioactivity for site remediation in decommissioning and contaminated site.

This paper reports that the Lambert W function applies to a non-iterative design of minimum mean square-error scalar quantizers for a Laplacian source. Specifically, it considers a non-iterative design algorithm for optimum quantizers for a Laplacian source; it finds that the solution of the recursive nonlinear equation in the non-iterative design is elegantly expressed in term of the principal branch of the Lambert W function in a closed form; and it proves that the non-iterative algorithm applies only to exponential or Laplacian sources. The contribution of the paper is in the reduction of the time needed for the design and the increased accuracy in resulting quantization points and thresholds, because the algorithm is non-iterative and the Lambert W function can be evaluated as accurately as desired. Also, numerical results show how optimal quantization distortion converges monotonically to the Panter-Dite constant and help derive an approximation formula for the key parameters of optimum quantizers.
Flowering dates of 389 plant species in the Hongneung Arboretum, Seoul, had been recorded from 1968 through 1975. The thermal analysis on the air temperature as the key factor determining the first flowering date, with climatological data obtained in the Arboretum, were undertaken by Nuttonson's Index (1948) and Lindsey & Newman's Index (1956). The results and conclusion in this study are as follow; Peak in the bell shape distribution curve of the species and first flowering dates, largely, was early May. Flower spans of most species were 10 to 20 days, neverthless, some species flower only a few days while others may stay flowering a hundred days even more. Increase-curves of summation temperature from early spring through late-summer showed almost the same mode in both Nuttonson;s Index (Tn) and Lindsey & Newman's Index (T1). These Indices manifested the exponential curve, increasing slowly at the beginning of spring chiefly but rapidly from the middle part of April. The equation of the linear relationahip between Tn and Tl as far as in thisstudy is as follow. Tl=230Tn It appears that the distribution of summation temperature, below Tn=400°C·day, affects the first flowering, even though it could be modified somehow by the distribution of precipitation, day length and others. Nuttonson's Index (Tn.f) and Lindsey & Newman's Index (Tl.f) upon the thermal amount first flowering dates have been respectively simulated as follow. Tn.f=θa + C Tl.f=230θa + 230C where θ is air temperature 10°C, a and C are a constant.
To clarify the effects of forest fire on the carbon budget of a forest ecosystem, this study compared the seasonal variation of soil respiration, net primary production and net ecosystem production (NEP) over the year in unburned and burned Pinus densiflora forest areas. The annual net carbon storage (i.e., NPP) was $5.75t\;C\;ha^{-1}$ in the unburned site and $2.14t\;C\;ha^{-1}$ in the burned site in 2012. The temperature sensitivity of soil respiration (i.e., $Q_{10}$ value) was higher in the unburned site than in the burned site. The annual soil respiration rate was estimated by the exponential regression equation with the soil temperatures continuously measured at the soil depth of 10 cm. The estimated annual soil respiration and heterotrophic respiration (HR) rates were 8.66 and $4.50t\;C\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ in the unburned site and 4.08 and $2.12t\;C\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$ in the burned site, respectively. The estimated annual NEP in the unburned and burned forest areas was found to be 1.25 and $0.02t\;C\;ha^{-1}yr^{-1}$, respectively. Our results indicate that the differences of carbon budget and cycling between both study sites are considerably correlated with the losses of living plant biomass, insufficient nutrients and low organic materials in the forest soil due to severe damages caused by the forest fire. The burned Pinus densiflora forest area requires at least 50 years to attain the natural conditions of the forest ecosystem prior to the forest fire.

A runoff model is estabilished for the direct runoff hydrograph at the watershed outlet. The watershed is divided into subareas bounded by watershed lines of stream segment. Different storage elements are used to represent the subareas which simply translate rain-fall excess to runoff and transmit flow from an upstream areas. For transmit, the relationship between flowsection and runoff is expressed by the exponential function to represent the nonlinearity of lag time, and the relationship between flowsection and stream length is expressed by the 1st order equation to represent the effect of the travel length. The parameters of lag time can be obtained by stream magnitude and the effective rain fall is routed through the main stream. Application of the model to the Bochung river basin gives accurate results, especially for the peak runoff and peak time, and is approved to be used for the prediction by stream magnitude of small watershed having no runoff records.

The char oxidation characteristics of ashless coal with a relatively low ash content and high heating value were experimentally investigated at several temperatures (from $900^{\circ}C$ to $1300^{\circ}C$), in various oxygen concentrations (from 10% to 30%) under atmospheric pressure in a drop tube furnace. The char reaction rate was calculated from the exhaust gas concentrations (CO, $CO_2$) measured by FT-IR, and the particle temperature was measured by the two-color method. In addition, the activation energy and pre-exponential factor of ashless coal char were also calculated based on the Arrhenius equation. The results show that higher temperature and oxygen concentration result in a higher reaction rate of ashless coal, and the activation energy of ashless coal char is similar to that of bituminous coal.
The physical status (standing height, body weight, chest girth, sitting height, length of leg, length of thigh, thigh girth, length of crus, length of arm, brachial length, antebrachial girth and skinfold thickness) of 360 healthy middle and high school boys aged between 12 and 17 years in Taegu area was measured and evaluated by means of dispersion. For regression equation and coefficient ofidetermination of each status against standing height were computed. The growth progress of physical status had a tendency to be exponential and, generally, between 13 and 14 years of age the fastest progress was observed. The regression coefficient of body weight against standing height (0.90) was largest and that of skinfold thickness against standing height (0.09) was smallest. In general, the dimension of the regression coefficient was accordant with the dimension of respective physical status. Except in length of thigh and skinfold thickness, coefficient of determination of each physical status against standing height was almost 1 and the regression line could express the relation between standing height and each physical status very satisfactorily. But the regression curve was more desirable for the elucidation of the relation between standing height and skinfold thickness.
High Deborah or Weissenberg number problems in viscoelastic flow modeling have been known formidably difficult even in the inertialess limit. There exists almost no result that shows satisfactory accuracy and proper mesh convergence at the same time. However recently, quite a breakthrough seems to have been made in this field of computational rheology. So called matrix-logarithm (here we name it tensor-logarithm) formulation of the viscoelastic constitutive equations originally written in terms of the conformation tensor has been suggested by Fattal and Kupferman (2004) and its finite element implementation has been first presented by Hulsen (2004). Both the works have reported almost unbounded convergence limit in solving two benchmark problems. This new formulation incorporates proper polynomial interpolations of the logarithm for the variables that exhibit steep exponential dependence near stagnation points, and it also strictly preserves the positive definiteness of the conformation tensor. In this study, we present an alternative procedure for deriving the tensor-logarithmic representation of the differential constitutive equations and provide a numerical example with the Leonov model in 4:1 planar contraction flows. Dramatic improvement of the computational algorithm with stable convergence has been demonstrated and it seems that there exists appropriate mesh convergence even though this conclusion requires further study. It is thought that this new formalism will work only for a few differential constitutive equations proven globally stable. Thus the mathematical stability criteria perhaps play an important role on the choice and development of the suitable constitutive equations. In this respect, the Leonov viscoelastic model is quite feasible and becomes more essential since it has been proven globally stable and it offers the simplest form in the tensor-logarithmic formulation.
The gametogenic cycle, the number of spawning seasons per year and first sexual maturiity of the pen shell, Atrina (Servatrina) pectinata, were investigated by quantitative statistical analysis using an Image Analyzer System. Compared two previous results (the spawning periods in the reproductive cycles in 1998 and 2006) by qualitative histological analysis with the present results by quantitative statistical analysis, there are some differences in the spawning periods: the spawning period (June to September) by quantitative statistical analysis was one month longer than those of two previous reports (June to July or June to August) by qualitative histological analysis. However, the number of spawning seasons studied by the qualitative and quatitative analyses occurred once per year. In quantitative statistical analysis using an image analyzer system, the patterns of monthly changes in the percent (%) of the areas occupied by follicles to the ovary area in females (or that of the areas occupied by spermatogenic stages to the testis area in males) showed a maximum in May, and then sharply droped from June to September, 2006. From these data, it is apparent that the spawning season of A. (S.) pectinata occurred once a year from June to September, indicating a unimodal gametogenic cycle during the year. Shell heights of sexually mature pen shells (size at 50% of group sexual maturity, $GM_{50}$) that were fitted to an exponential equation were 15.81 cm in females and 15.72 cm in males (considered to be one year old).
