Purpose: In a previous study, the transmembrane protein FXYD-3 was suggested as a biomarker for a lower survival rate and reduced radiosensitivity in rectal cancer patients receiving preoperative radiotherapy. The purpose of preoperative irradiation in rectal cancer is to reduce local recurrence. The aim of this study was to investigate the potential role of FXYD-3 as a biomarker for increased risk for local recurrence of rectal cancer. Materials and Methods: FXYD-3 expression was immunohistochemically examined in surgical specimens from a cohort of patients with rectal cancer who developed local recurrence (n = 48). The cohort was compared to a matched control group without recurrence (n = 81). Results: Weak FXYD-3 expression was found in 106/129 (82%) of the rectal tumors and strong expression in 23/129 (18%). There was no difference in the expression of FXYD-3 between the patients with local recurrence and the control group. Furthermore there was no difference in FXYD-3 expression and time to diagnosis of local recurrence between patients who received preoperative radiotherapy and those without. Conclusion: Previous findings indicated that FXYD-3 expression may be used as a marker of decreased sensitivity to radiotherapy or even overall survival. We were unable to confirm this in a cohort of rectal cancer patients who developed local recurrence.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of a structured preoperative PCA education on the knowledge and attitude regarding PCA usage, level of pain, and the consumption of analgesics after operation for colorectal surgery patients. Methods: This study was conducted from 18 Feb to 2 May, 2008. Participants were 80 colorectal cancer patients who would use the IV-PCA after colorectal surgery in a cancer hospital in Gyeonggi-do, Korea. Two groups, experimental and control were consisted of 40 patients each. The 20-minute structured education regarding PCA usage was applied to each patient individually in the experimental group but only the routine anesthetic consultation was given to each patient in the control group the day before the surgery. The SPSS/PC 10.0 program was introduced to analyze the collected data on frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, $x^2$-test, t-test and paired t-test. Results: The experimental group with the structured preoperative PCA education showed higher knowledge and more positive attitudes regarding the PCA usage than the control group. Also the experimental group showed better pain control and lower consumption of analgesics at 4, 8 and 24 hours after than the control group. Conclusion: The structured preoperative PCA education is an effective nursing intervention for improving the knowledge and attitude of the colorectal surgery patients on the PCA usage, and enabling the patient to take the analgesic more effectively with lower consumption, while reducing the patients' pain after operation.
Purpose: This study was to examine the effects of noise block on anxiety and vital sign of gynecologic laparoscopic surgery. Methods: The data were collected from March to May 2011. Participants were sixty patients with gynecologic laparoscopic surgery, divided into 30 of experimental group and 30 of control group at C University hospital located in I city. The day before surgery, demographic data, trait-state anxiety and vital signs were measured at ward. After noise block, the data were measured using VAS anxiety and vital signs before anesthesia and in recovery room. And then state anxiety and vital signs were measured in ward after surgery. The data were analyzed by $x^2$-test, t-test, repeated measured ANOVA and Bonferroni comparison method using SPSS/WIN 19.0. Results: After conducting noise block program, the experimental group showed significant decrease in state anxiety and heart rate compared to those of the control group. But there were not significant differences in VAS anxiety, systolic pressure and diastolic pressure between two groups. Conclusion: This program can be regarded as an effective nursing intervention for the management of anxiety with gynecologic laparoscopic surgery.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine quality of life with patients in 12 months after coronary artery bypass graft surgery, compared with general population. Method: A cross-sectional comparative study was designed. Study participants were 90 adults who had undergone CABG surgery (n=45) in experimental group and general population (n=45) in control group. The subjects were asked the questionnaire (SF-36, Short Form-36) regarding the quality of life. The data were analyzed by the SPSS 13.0 program including frequency, percentage, $x^2$ test, t-test and One-Way ANOVA. Results: There were no significant differences in the quality of life between two groups including physical functioning (t=-.938, p=.351), role-physical limitation (t=-.322, p=.748), bodily pain (t=-.938, p=.351), general health (t=-.1418, p=.888), vitality (t=-.816, p=.417), social functioning (t=.720, p=.474), role-emotional limitation (t=-.710, p=.479), mental health (t=-.431, p=.667). Conclusion: Even though patients in experimental group had operation experience, the quality of life examined on the time of 1 year after bypass surgery is similar in that of general population. We suggest the study change the design as examination of quality of life before and after coronary artery bypass graft surgery.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of education regarding postoperative pain management provided for nurses as well as patients on related factors of pain management, including nurses' knowledge and attitude of postoperative pain, and the level of pain that patients felt after surgery. Method: A quasi-experimental research design was used in this research. Twenty-one nurses currently working in general surgery units and 32 patients who were taking on abdominal surgery in A university hospital were participated in this study. The three week-educational program of postoperative pain management including lecture, quiz, poster and discussion was provided for nurse participants. The postoperative pain management education for each patient was provided one day before his/her own operation for 20 minutes with the pamphlet developed by researchers. For assessing the effects, nurses' knowledge and attitude about pain management, patients' postoperative pain, pain control barriers, and satisfaction of pain management were measured. Results: The nurses' knowledge about pain management and the patients' satisfaction of pain management in the experimental group were higher than in the control group. The patients' postoperative pain in the experimental group was lower than in the control group. Conclusion: With the above results, the postoperative pain management education could be an effective nursing intervention for pain management of patients who were taking surgery.

In the dentistry field, an ultrasonic surgery unit is widely used in bone cutting and scaling to reduce operation time and minimize hemorrhage. The purpose of this study was to evaluate bone cutting and the effect of a specimen's temperature on the two-type ultrasonic surgery unit using a handpiece moving system(HMS). A HMS, which can cut the bone, was developed to perform the experimental procedure with precision of motion control. Bone specimens were prepared from a combination of epoxy-hardener and cortical bone of bovine leg. Through the bone-cutting experiment, the cutting depth was evaluated by not only scanning electron microscopy, but also Vernier calipers. Also, the temperature distribution was measured by a thermo-graphic camera. This study may be applied methodically in various experimental evaluations on a performance test by a HMS.

Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the effects of gum-chewing on the recovery of bowel movement and oral cavity discomfort after abdominal surgery. Method: The nonequivalent control group, non-syncronized repeated treatment design was used. A total of 99 patients were participated in the study. The 44 patients were in the experimental group and the rest in the control group. The experimental group chewed gum three times a day until they passed gas. As the patient reported gas-passing, bowel movement time, subjective symptoms of oral cavity, and oral status were recorded precisely. The frequency, percentage, $x^2$-test and t-test were analyzed by SPSS PC 12.0. Results: There were significant differences in bowel movement, gas passing, oral cavity symptoms, and oral status scores between the experimental and the control group. Conclusion: The findings of the study demonstrated the fact that gum-chewing helps early recovery from post-operative ileus and thirst. It is because gum chewing stimulates bowel mobility and secretion of saliva. Thus gum-chewing seems to be an effective nursing intervention in reducing post-operative side effects for patients with abdominal surgery.
Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of botulinum toxin A (BTX) injection into the anterior belly of the digastric muscle on a growing rat. Methods: Ten Sprague Dawley rats were used in this study. When the rats were 13 days old, 0.5 units of BTX was injected into the anterior belly of the digastric muscle for the experimental group (n = 5). For the control, the same volume of normal saline was injected (n = 5). The rats were sacrificed at 60 days old, and the skulls were harvested for micro-computed tomography (μCT) analysis. Results: In anthropometric analysis, the zygomatic arch and mandibular bi-condylar width were significantly lower in the experimental group than those in the control group (P = 0.025 and 0.027, respectively). The maxillary point width was significantly higher in the experimental group than that in the control group (P = 0.020). Conclusion: BTX injection into the anterior belly of the digastric muscle had effects on the maxillofacial bony width in growing rats.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of cancer-overcome BeHaS exercise program on pain, flexibility, grip strength and stress in patient with breast cancer following surgery. Method: Study was designed as a non-synchronized research method with a nonequivalent control group. Data collection was performed from September 2007 to January 1, 2008. Participants were 34 patients (experimental group: 19, control group: 15) undergoing surgery for breast cancer in a hospital in D city. Women in the experimental group were participated in the cancer-overcome BeHaS (Be Happy and Strong) exercise program for 60 minutes per session once a week for 8 weeks and it was recommended that they do the exercises once more each week at home. The control group received one education session on breast cancer management. Results: There were no significant differences between the two groups for pain, flexibility or grip strength. But stress in experimental group was significantly decreased compared to that of the control group. Conclusion: This result suggests that cancer-overcome BeHaS exercise program is helpful to reduce stress in patients after breast cancer surgery. Further research is needed for multi-dimensional evaluation on psycho-social effects of cancer-overcome BeHaS exercise program.
