  • This paper proposes a control algorithm, which is verified experimentally, for aspherical surface grinding and polishing. The algorithm provides simultaneous control of the position and interpolation of an aspheric curve. The nonlinear formula for the tool position was derived from the aspheric equation and the shape of the tool. The function was partitioned at specific intervals and the control parameters were calculated at each control section. The position, acceleration, and velocity at each interval were updated during the process. A position error feedback was introduced using a rotary encoder. The feedback algorithm corrected the position error by increasing or decreasing the feed speed. In the experimental verification, a two-axis machine was controlled to track an aspherical surface using the proposed algorithm. The effects of the control and process parameters were monitored. The results demonstrated that the maximum tracking error with tuned parameters was at the submicron level for concave and convex surfaces.

  • Computer optimization technique was applied to obtain the optimum formula of o/w type ointment vehicle containing sodium lauryl sulfate and 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (MP). In order to determine the feasibility of optimizing a vehicle composition with the aid of computer, the amounts of sodium lauryl sulfate $(X_1)$, salicylic acid $(X_2)$, and MP $(X_3)$ were selected as the independent variables for the solubility and the absorption rates of salicylic acid (dependent variables). The experimental values of absorption rates agreed well with the calculation values obtained from the polynomial regression analysis, and the contour charts drawn by computer were useful in optimization process.

  • Objectives : We investigated genetic toxicity of HMCO5 in relation to chromosome aberration test on Cultured Chinese Hamster Lung (CHL) in the presence and absence of S-9 mix. Methods : Experimental groups were divided into two groups: with S-9mix (+S) or without S-9 mix (-S). -S group was also divided 2 series by treatment hours (6 hr: 6-S; or 24 hr; 24-S). Each group treated with vehicle only (complete culture medium), HMCO5 (1,250, 2,500, $5,000\;{\mu}g/ml$), and cyclophosphamide monohydrate (CPA) and ethylmethanesulfonate (EMS), respectively. Results : HMC05 did not show any aberrant metaphase. However, there were significant (p < 0.01) aberrant metaphases with CPA in S+ and with EMS in S-. Conclusions : These results indicate that HMC05 formula does not show any toxicity in chromosome aberration test.

  • Researchers have previously proven that the flapping motion of the hydrofoil can convert wave energy into propulsive energy. However, the estimation of thrust forces generated by the flapping foil placed in waves remains a challenging task for ocean engineers owing to the complex dynamics and uncertainties involved. In this study, the flapping foil system consists of a rigid NACA0015 section undergoing harmonic flapping motion and a passively actuated elastic flat plate attached to the leading edge of the rigid foil. We have experimentally measured the thrust force generated due to the flapping motion of a rigid foil attached to an elastic plate in a wave flume, and the effects of the elastic plates have been discussed in detail. Furthermore, an empirical formula was introduced to predict the thrust force of a flapping foil based on our experimental results using multiple regression analysis.

  • An analytical study to trace the nonlinear structural behavior of composite beams is undertaken to include the nonlinear material properties of steel sheeting, reinforcing steel bar and concrete. To trace Moment-curvature relations, sectioning analysis method and two simple formulas are developed. A simple power model which has been originally used to expect the flexural capacity of the beam to column connections is proposed and the second formula is composed of two experimental functions to express the Moment-curvature relation in the elastic and plastic range separately. The load-deflection behavior of the beams has been simulated by the step-by-step numerical integration method and is compared with the test results available.

  • The evaluation of thermal properties of actinide oxide fuels is a problem of high importance for the development of new generation reactors. In the present study, an expression obtained for n-dimensional Debye functions is used to derive a simple analytical expression for the specific heat capacity of nuclear fuels. To test the validity and reliability of this expression, the analytical expression is applied to $UO_2$, $NpO_2$, $ThO_2$, and $PuO_2$. It is seen that the formula was in agreement with the experimental and theoretical results reported in the literature.

  • As for axisymmetirc sheet metal forming, a kind of pick-up apparatus for body-wrinkling is deviced. Experiments with both hemispherical and flat headed punches, with various clearances between punch and die, with respect to three kinds of materials each of which has two thicknesses, are performed. Firstly the process of evolution of body-wrinkling is observed. Then the critical blank-holding force (or meridional tensile force) for suppression of body-wrinkling at a specified punch-stroke is measured for all cases mentioned above. An empirical formula for it is proposed. Deformation patterns and stress distributions are analysed by the use of FEM. A simplified critical condition for body-wrinkling is formulated and introduced into the FEM program. And its effectiveness is checked by comparison with the experimental results. Using this FEM system, the governing factors of body-wrinkling are cleared up.

  • Internal waves are computed using a ghost fluid method on an unstructured grid. Discontinuities in density and dynamic pressure are captured in one cell without smearing or oscillations along a multimaterial interface. A time-accurate incompressible Navier-Stokes/Euler solver is developed based on a three-point backward difference formula for the physical time marching. Artificial compressibility is introduced with respect to pseudotime and an implicit method is used for the pseudotime iteration. To track evolution of an interface, a level set function is coupled with the governing equations. Roe's flux difference splitting method is used to calculate numerical fluxes of the coupled equations. To get higher order accuracy, dependent variables are reconstructed based on gradients which are calculated using Gauss theorem. For each edge crossing an interface, dynamic pressure is assigned for a ghost node to enforce the continuity of total pressure along the interface. Solitary internal waves are computed and the results are compared with other computational and experimental results.

  • Railway system is consisted of various resources such as rail-line, signal, and railcar. It is necessary to efficiently utilize these limited and expensive resources as much as possible up to given line capacity. So far, we treat the line capacity as the criteria for evaluating investment alternatives or for restricting train frequencies, and this criteria is calculated statical and experimental numerical formula. But, line capacity has special attribute that changes dynamically according to operational conditions, so there is a need of new line capacity estimation system. In this paper, we present an improved systematic line capacity model. The proposed model has three main components ; TPS(tain performance simulator), PES (parameter evaluation simulator), LCS(line capacity simulator). The concept of each sub-component is described, including the evaluation method of capacity parameters. And capacity parameter evaluation and estimation results using sample line section data are presented.

  • The quadratic and cubic force constants of hydrogen molecule are calculated by use of the one center function of Bishop. The master formula on which the computation is based was suggested by the previous work of one of the present authors. The results are in good agreement with the experimental values.
