In this paper, the experiments to decide the riprap size for the local scour protection at bridge piers and the coefficients of attack angle were conducted. A formula for the decision of the riprap size and a figure for the coefficients of attack angle were suggested based upon the experimental results. The coefficients of attack angle indicate different values based on the variation of the length-width ratio of bridge pier and the coefficients are increased by the increment of the attack angle. In this paper, the experiments using the piers having the opening ratios of 90%, 92.86% and 95% were conducted. Also, the attack angles 0$^{\circ}$, 15$^{\circ}$, 30$^{\circ}$, 45$^{\circ}$ and 60$^{\circ}$ as well as four different length-width ratios of the bridge pier were utilized. The suggested formula were compared with 6 different formulas and the riprap sizes calculated using the equation suggested in this paper indicate the similar patterns with the formula suggested by Richardson. The suggested formula in this paper can be widely applied in the riprap design for the local scour protection around the bridge pier with the consideration of the attack angle to the flow.
The double split Tee connection, a type of full strength-partially restrained connection, has adequate flexural strength according to the changes in the thickness of the T-stub flange and the gauge distance of the high-strength bolts. Moreover, the double split Tee connection is designed and constructed with seismic connections that have enough ductility capacity applicable to ordinary moment frame and special moment frame by grade of steel, size of beam and column and geometric connection shape. However, such a domestic research and a proposal of a suitable design formula about the double split Tee connection are insufficient. Thus, many experimental and analytical studies are in need for the domestic application of the double split Tee connection. Therefore, this study aimed to examine and suggest feasibility of a design formula of the double split Tee connection of FEMA.
Reinforced concrete beams are often retrofitted with various FRP composite sheets. This paper is focused on the comparison of structural performance of various FRP sheets and proposal of the retrofitting design formula. Effects of the FRP kinds(AFRP, GFRP, CFRP) and the reinforcing steel ratio on behavior of the retrofitting beams are tested and analyzed with particular emphasis on the maximum load capacity, stiffness, and ductility. The experimental work included 4 point flexural testing of 3.2m span reinforced concrete beams with bonded external reinforcements. The results show that the difference of FRP kinds is not large and the flexural load capacity is mainly affected by stiffness of the retrofitting materials. This paper also proposes the design formula on the retrofitting reinforced concrete flexural members and checks with this experimantal work and previous research results.
A water shortage is one of the most important factors for development and management of water resources. For reliable water shortage measurement in a stream, Korea Water Resources Corporation(KOWACO) founded five foot Parshall flume at Yong-dam experimental watershed in 2000. The Parshall flume has a specially designed shape to facilitate flow measurements by eliminating sediment deposition problem that could lead to an incorrect measurement. In this study, computational fluid dynamics(CFD) model was used to analyze flow behavior of Parshall Flume under free discharge of five headwater level cases. The flow rates computed by CFD model are compared with those by ISO's formula, USBR's formula and stage-discharge rating curves. Flow rates computed by ISO's and USBR's formula are mostly same, but flow rate by CFD model is larger than empirical value by 9% and flow rate by stage-discharge rating curves is less than empirical value by 16%.

By way of driving a 2-way on/off solenoid hydraulic valve with a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal, control of the pressure in a certain volume is frequently used in various applications. However, the pressure built-up according to the duty ratio and carrier frequency of the PWM signal is not so well understood. In order to clarify the characteristics of 2-way valve hydraulic pressure control systems, in this paper two formula fur the mean and ripple of the load pressure were derived through theoretical analysis. And the accuracy of the derived formula were verified by comparison with the experimental test result. Generally 2-way valve systems are constructed as a bleed-off circuit, while 3-way valves are used as a control element in a meter-in circuit pressure control system. In a bleed-off circuit, the system supply pressure from a hydraulic power pack does not remain constant, but changes according to their external load. In turn, the relief valve in the hydraulic power pack reacts accordingly showing complicated dynamic behavior, which makes an analytical study difficult. In order to resolve the problem, simple but accurate empirical dynamic models fer a bleed-off system were used in the course of formula derivation. As the result, selection criteria for two major control parameters of the driving signal is established and the basic strategy to suppress the unnecessary pressure fluctuation can be provided for a hydraulic pressure control system using a 2-way on/off solenoid valve.
Among the test methods to evaluate stress-corrosion cracking(SCC) on the basis of fracture mechanics, constant displacement(bolt) loading method using modified-WOL specimen is practically convenient. In this test method, compliance formula is generally required to calculate load(consequently $K_{ISCC}$). There are many problems in using the analytic compliance formula to calculate $K_{ISCC}$, so we had proposed the experimental $K_{ISCC}$ evaluation technique in the previous report. This study has employed the slightly altered configuration of modified-WOL specimen made of weldable structural stee(BS360-50D). With these specimens, stress-corrosion tests have been performed in $H_2S$ gas saturated 20% HCl solution. Through the test, the problems as mentioned earlier have been discussed again, and the proposed evaluation technique has been verified. And the stress-corrosion cracks and hydrogen blisters have been investigated in the initiation step with the aids of metallurgical micrographs, SEM fractographs, and EPMA analysis. The inclusions segregated in the mid-thickness region traps hydrogen to produce the hydrogen blistering. The applied or residual stress does not contribute the occurrence of the blister. Hydrogen absorbed into the mid-thickness region is consumed to produce the blistering so that stress-corrosion crack could hardly be detected at that region. The stress-corrosion cracks initiate from the inclusions and propagate in radial pattern. And the initiation site is remote from the crack tip and is inclined from the crack plane, which is assumed to be caused by the triaxial stress and the amount of the absorbed hydrogen.
This paper described the ultimate strength and deformation limit of welded T-joints in cold-formed square hollow sections. Previous studies showed that the T-joint has an obvious peak load. with the failure mode of chord-web buckling at a ratio of branch width to chord width ($\beta$) of above 0.8. Similar to a T-joint with chord-flange failure mode, the strength at a certain deformation limit can be regarded as the ultimate strength of a T-joint Based on the experimental results including tests done by Kato and Zhao, the deformation limit was proposed as 3%B for $10.7{\leq}2{\gamma}(B/T){\leq}42.3$ and $0.8{\leq}{\beta}{\leq}1.0$. The strength formula of CIDECT and those of other researchers were also compared with the test results. Finally, the strength formula based on the column buckling was proposed.
Densities of a large number of mixed uranyl nitrate-thorium nitrate solutions were measured with pycnometer. By the least squares analysis of the experimental result, an empirical formula for determining water content of mixed uranyl nitrate-thorium nitrate solutions as functions of uranium concentration, thorium concentration and nitric acid normality is derived; $W=1.0-0.358\;C_u-0.4538\;C_{Th}-0.0307\;H^+$ where $W,\;C_u,\;C_{Th},\;and\;H^+$ stand for water content(g/cc), uranium concentration (g/cc), thorium concentration (g/cc), and nitric acid normality, respectively. Water contents of the mixed uranyl nitrate-thorium nitrate solutions are calculated by using the empirical formula, and compared with the values calculated by Bouly's equation in which an additional data, solution density, is required. The two results show good agreements within 2.7%.
This paper described the ultimate strength and deformation limit of welded T-joints in cold-formed square hollow sections. Previous studies showed that the strength of a T-joint still increases with increasing deformations at a ratio of branch width to chord width (${\beta}$) of below 0.8. Therefore, the strength at a certain deformation (chord flange indentation) limit can be regarded as the ultimate strength of a T-joint. The chord flange failure modes were investigated for the ratio of branch width to chord width (${\beta}$) and the ratio of chord width to chord web thickness (B/T). Experimental results including tests done by Kato proposed a deformation limit of 3%B for $16.7{\leq}B/T{\leq}41.6$ and $0.27{\leq}{\beta}{\leq}0.8$. The strength formula of CIDECT and other researchers were compared with the test results. Finally, the strength formula based on yield-line theory was proposed.
Until now, wall-slab plate of steel plate concrete has been constructed by joint. But, the shear plate has problems in the workability as well as structural integrity. This study investigates the behavior and strength of rib stiffened SC wall-slab connection. Seven prototype specimens of wall-slab connections were fabricated and tested. the structural safety of the specimens was confirmed through the monotonic loading test. Based on the experimental observations, this study propose the strength formula of the joint was proposed. To enhance the reliability of the proposed strength formula, analytical verification was performed through inelastic finite element analysis. Effect of parameters, such as, load point, friction coefficient, on the joint strength was examined. The proposed formula yields a conservative value for most cases.
