  • In this paper, experimental studies of a neural network (NN) control technique for non-model based position control of the x-y table robot are presented. Decentralized neural networks are used to control each axis of the x-y table robot separately. For an each neural network compensator, an inverse control technique is used. The neural network control technique called the reference compensation technique (RCT) is conceptually different from the existing neural controllers in that the NN controller compensates for uncertainties in the dynamical system by modifying desired trajectories. The back-propagation learning algorithm is developed in a real time DSP board for on-line learning. Practical real time position control experiments are conducted on the x-y table robot. Experimental results of using neural networks show more excellent position tracking than that of when PD controllers are used only.

  • Many approaches to local anesthesia have been studied in dentistry. In this study, we introduce a new local anesthetic method, "Point-Inject Technique (PIT)", and compare it with traditional injection techniques. The PIT method utilizes both the vasoconstrictive and antinociceptive properties of local anesthetics as well as the application of controlled pressure during injection, reducing the time to complete anesthesia. Fifty patients were selected as the experimental group who were anesthetized using PIT, and the other 50 patients were selected as the control group using the direct injection method with a carpool syringe. The PIT group received 0.25 cartridges of 2% lidocaine with 1:100,000 epinephrine. The control group received 1.5~2 cartridges of 2% lidocaine with 1:100,000 epinephrine. Both groups were asked to mark the intensity of the pain caused by anesthesia using the Numeric Pain Rating Scale. The average time to recover from anesthesia was 40 minutes in the experimental group and 90 minutes in the control group. Additionally, 96% of the experimental group reported feeling no pain, while 78% of the control group reported having some form of pain during injection. The PIT method reduced both the reported pain scores of patients as well as time to recover from local anesthesia than the widely-used syringe injection method.

  • This paper deals with the vibration deflection shape measurement technique for a sinusoidally excited structure using a continuously scanning laser Doppler vibrometer (CSLV). The CSLV output signal is an amplitude-modulated vibration in which the excitation signal is modulated by the deflection shapes, and thus the deflection shapes of vibration defined along a scan line can be derived by the envelop and the phase information of the CSLV output signal. In this work, a Hilbert transform based approach has been proposed for measurement of deflection shapes. This technique is as simple as the demodulation technique and allows more convenient experimental settings than the Fourier transform approach. The feasibility of the proposed technique is illustrated along with results of experiment.

  • A new experimental technique is proposed to localize the flow limiting segment(FLS) during forced expiration. The present technique is based on the pressure drip across FLS and a consequent change in airway resistance, which can provide an accurate and objective location of FLS. During forced expiratory maneuver artificially induced by a strong negative pressure (-100mmHg) applied at the trachea in an anesthetized open chest dog, airway resistance( R) was calculated from air flow and airway pres- sure signals at various airway locations and lung volumes, At the lung volumes above 10 % VC, FLS located in the trachea 6cm lower from the larynx. With the lung volume decreased below 8% VC, FLS jumped upstream to End-3rd generation of the airway. These results were similar with the previous reports from excised dog lungs, which demonstrated the validity of the present technique. Since the present technique provides a more objective measure of FLS location, it would be useful in future studies of expiratory flow limitation.

  • This paper describes an experimental study of growing ductile crack-tip behaviors by means of computer image processing technique and finite element method. Here, the displacement field near a crack-tip is first measured by the computer image processing technique. Combined with the finite element technique, strain and stress fields are evaluated from the measured displacement. Then, crack-tip parameters such as J-integral are evaluated using the obtained displacement, strain and stress fields. The present technique Is applied to a growing crack problem of tensile CT specimen made of 304 stainless steel. The ductile crack growth behaviors accompanied by unloading are discussed in detail through the comparison between the experimental and the theoretical results.

  • Predictive current control offers the potential for achieving more precise current control with a minimum of distortion and harmonic noise. However, the predictive method is difficult to implement and has a greater computational burden. This paper introduces a theoretical analysis and experimental verification for an improved predictive current control technique applied to single phase grid connected voltage source inverters (VSI). The proposed technique has simple calculations. An ATmega1280 microcontroller board is used to implement the proposed technique for a simpler and cheaper control system. To enhance the current performance and to obtain a minimum of current THD, an improved tri-level PWM switching strategy is proposed. The proposed switching strategy uses six operation modes instead of four as in the traditional strategy. Simulation results are presented to demonstrate the system performance with the improved switching strategy and its effect on current performance. The presented experimental results verify that the proposed technique can be implemented using fixed point 8-bit microcontroller to obtain excellent results.

  • For accurate gain tuning of the lab-manufactured six-axis articulated robot RS2 with less noise, in this study, a program routine using dynamic signal analyzer, which is a realization of a controller design algorithm in the frequency domain, is programmed using LabVIEW$^{(R)}$. The contribution of this paper is the proposal of a simulation technique based on SolidWorks$^{(R)}$ and LabVIEW$^{(R)}$ for the gain tuning of a six-axis articulated robot. To realize the simulation, the LabVIEW$^{(R)}$ program used for experimental gain tuning is incorporated in to SolidWorks$^{(R)}$. A comparison shows that the results of simulation-based gain tuning and experimental gain tuning are almost the same within a 5% error bound. On the basis of the comparison, it can be suggested that the simulation-based technique for gain tuning can be applied instead of experimental gain tuning to a six-axis articulated robot by interlocking SolidWorks$^{(R)}$ and LabVIEW$^{(R)}$.

  • Several techniques have been developed for shear strengthening of reinforced concrete (RC) members by using fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites. However, debonding of FRP retrofits from concrete substrate still deemed as a challenging concern in their application which needs to be scrutinized in details. As a result, this paper reports on the results of an experimental investigation on shear strengthening of RC beams using near surface mounted (NSM) FRP reinforcing bars. The main objective of the experimentation was increasing the efficiency of shear retrofits by precluding/postponing the premature debonding failure. The experimental program was comprised of six shear deficient RC beams. The test parameters include the FRP rebar spacing, inclination angle, and groove shape. Also, an innovative modification was introduced to the conventional NSM technique and its efficiency was evaluated by experimental observation and measurement. The results testified the efficiency of glass FRP (GFRP) rebars in increasing the shear strength of the test specimens retrofitted using conventional NSM technique. However, debonding of FRP bars impeded exploiting all retrofitting advantages and induced a premature shear failure. On the contrary, application of the proposed modified NSM (MNSM) technique was not only capable of preventing the premature debonding of FRP bars, but also could replace the failure mode of specimen from the brittle shear to a ductile flexural failure which is more desirable.
