This paper is to explore a new planning paradigm for urban landscape-not a new paradigm for urban landscape planning- in the light of environmental aesthetics. This is an endeavor to construct an alternative to the philosophical absence in the landscape profession. The landscape has been conceived of visual -oriented urban scene, and this notion is one of consequences of subject-object dualism in Western modernity project. In contrast with this convention, the authors consider urban landscape as the aesthetic field in which an experience of urban landscape actually works in human ordinary life and experience. To acquire an aestetic experience in this aesthetic field, we need to replace the doctrine of disinterestedness with engagement and contemplation with participation. This concept of participatory engagement with landscape can be translated in specific and concrete ways into urban landscape planning, replacing the traditional panoramic landscape with engaged landscape. The authors approach the urban landscape from the vantage point of an aesthetics of engagement by developing the four environmental situations : the sailing ship, the circus, the cathedral, and the sunset. They may serve as useful guides in cultivating and beautiful urban landscape to replace the forces of vulgarity and monotony that depress the modern city. The Landscape Drawing is the main medium for constructing better environment which provides human beings with a place for dwelling well, even though it has some limitations. To provide places for people's daily lives, by what measure do we design\ulcorner, by what measure do we give dimension\ulcorner, and how can we appropriately measure the place with drawing\ulcorner On any given site, of course, much has already happened, i.e, there is history. Any adequate interpretation of such a site should poetically take into account the present effects of its absent past. The findings to reveal the meaning and methodology of landscape drawings in the environmental design with a case study are as follows: (1) The value of landscape drawings is the poetic, artistic interpretation which we sense and bodily experience through the simultaneous exposure of the site's temporal, spatial, and tactile conditions. (2) The landscape drawing should represent the invisible (imaginary) world as well as the visible (physical) world. (3) There can be classified as two methods in representing the rich experience of a place: expression and notation. Expression is the abstract representation and do not have a direct relationship to construction due to its ambiguous and connotative structure. But notation is constructional due to it's purely objective symbol system which is obviously denotative structure. (4) Collage is a medium of specific act that can represent the complex layered phenomena and the rich experience of given site. (5) The landscape drawings represent not only topographical space which can be measured objectively, but also topic which can be cognized culturally.

The purpose of this study is to consider the relationship between point of view and prospect behavior occurring in the experience of a painted landscape. This study analyzes one hundred scenes from the 'real landscape painting' by Kyumjae, one of the most famous landscape painters in 18th century Korea. The results of the study are as follows: 1. It clarified that Kyumjae's real landscape painting's 100 scenes have many view points such as roads, bridges, pavilions, mansions, towers, terraces, hillsides, bases of mountains, broad flat roots, brooksides, and ferries that are apt to occur in the experience of a landscape. The spatial characteristics of view points are expanded fields of vision, evening and night scenes, edges of landforms and structures from which to improve ones vantage point. 2. It showed that 99 out of real landscape painting's 100 scenes depict a view point'to look'and 79 of 'to look through', 73 of 'look around'and 24 of 'to look over'. 3. It showed that real landscape painting's 100 scenes depict that the view point 'to look' is mainly upon a road from which people are looking over an elevated landscape such as the top of a mountain or rockwall. The view behaviors of looking down are depict 15 pavilions, 14 mansions, 2 broad rocks and 10 mountain tops on which people experience landscapes such as fields, rural communities and streams. The view behaviors to look depict 33 ships, 24 roads, 24 pavilions, 19 mansions and 12 terraces on which people experience landscapes such as distant views of mountains, rivers and landscapes. The view behaviors to look around to obtain orientation of landscape are depict 16 pavilions, 10 mountaintops. To glimpse on the way of journey depict 33 ships and 29 roads. To look over depict 11 mansions and 6 pavilions on which experience borrows the landscape. To look through landscapes such as rivers, mountains and rockwalls depict 15 roads, 14 pavilions and 11 mansions. To exchange looks depict 30 ships, 14 roads, 12 pavilions and 12 mansions. We expect that these results might give clues toward the experience of landscapes and the practice of landscape design methods which select viewpoints, and in the design of view points suitable to prospect behaviors.

This study intends analyzes the experience urbanites need regarding rural amenities when visiting rural areas for leisure. For this purpose, 18 rural amenities that can be experienced at 65 traditional rural villages and are designated by the rural development administration(RDA) were selected. Based on rural amenity selection, a questionnaire survey was conducted in 10 cities with 1,052 urban residents. The cities were divided into 5 metropolitan cities(Seoul, Busan, Daegu, Kwangju and Daejeon) and 5 small cities in each province(Chuncheon, Suwon, Jeonju, Chungju and Pohang). The study results suggest that of the 18 rural amenities, urbanites want greater experience with landscape resources near water and forests, health resources related to food and traditional resources such as traditional architecture and culture. Those amenities not chosen were animals, famous people and agricultural landscapes. In addition, women indicated more experience needs than men. Specifically, women want to experience the rural amenities dealing with tradition and health. In addition, people under 40 want to experience active program related festivals(events) and arts and crafts, whereas the group over 40 prefers a non-active program, such as observing the rural landscape and planting. College graduates want to experience the landscape while college students prefer arts and crafts and festivals(events). Those with below average salaries want to experience the most rural amenities. There were no differences in experience needs between those surveyed in metropolitan cities and those in small cities. Finally, the people who visited rural areas within the last year want to experience water, plants, agricultural landscape, health and rural life resources more than other groups, and there is correlation between plans to visit rural villages and experience needs. The results of this study provide insightful information for rural planning strategies such as selection of the type of marketing segments.

This paper examines the conventional notion of natural beauty and its legacy on the aesthetic experience of nature and landscape architecture in terms of critical perspective. We can take its clue for discussion from the our routine convention of experiencing natural beauty from the picture-like nature. We often equate natural beauty with superficial representations of nature shown in pictures. However, it is no more than a by-stander's nature seen purely through the eyes of the outsider. Problems of the picture-like nature can be summarized as the contemplative and visual-oriented aesthetic experience of landscape, which has had its influence not only on the ways of seeing the natural beauty but also on the ways of making it. The tradition of the picture-like nature has been transplanted into the real world through the practice of landscape architecture. It has been mass-producing superficial beauty of nature, focused on visual form. Landscape architecture in such a form is just a static means of decoration devoid of meaning and content.

The objective of this study is to characterize the landscape retaining dynamic character through the distinction between the spatial structure and the landscape. In this study, the landscape was characterized by the image of environment viewed by human being. Firstly, the landscape was disscussed in terms of such three element as the environment viewed by human being, the psychological detachment from the environment and the meaning of image. Secondly, the dynamic character of the landscape was determined by the comparision between the spatial structure of the static elements and the landscape experience through the case study Soshe garden. In the study found that landscape experience depend on the dynamic viewpoint and human views while the spatial structure is stable and static. This study also found that landscape is an open system which can be diachronically transformed by human value, while spatial structure is a synchronic closed system.

The objective of this study is to test the influence of the landscape meaning illustrated to subjects on their landscape preference and to investigate the difference of the response(Influence Value;IV) between cultural landscape and natural landscape. For this, color-slide surrogates for cultural and natural landscape are shown to Experimental Group(EG) and Control Group(CG)(between-subject design). And Experimental Group is divided into meaning illustrated Before and After Group(within-subject design). For given 45 slide scenes of cultural and natural landscape, the subjects were asked to measure their preference on ten point scale. The results are as follows; 1. The influence of value illustration is positive in the preference. Specifically, this effect was more powerful for the low beauty landscape than for the high beauty landscape. 2. The relation between the IV and the preference of non illustrated group was deeply correlated. And IV of cultural landscape was higher than that of natural landscape. 3. It is identified that the meaning illustration about high naturalness landscape such as the swamp and alpine landscape is more effective than other natural landscape. 4. Also, the preference was more influenced by the personal task associated with landscape experience. But the statistical significance between the preference and experience about landscape didn't exist. Accordingly, it was suggested by this study that the illustrated meanings of landscape and perceived landscape form were also major influential factors on the landscape preference.
Since the experience of major landscape change during last half of the century due to war and rapid urbanization, the traditional character has been weakened, and it is necessary for a reconsideration to improve the landscape for the future. To review these relationships, the importance of a comprehensive understanding of nature has been suggested. Therefore identification of a new concept based on the 'socio-cultural influence of landscape' and 'sense of place' which are related to peoples' previous experience, is required. Furthermore more practical definitions and criteria to reveal the relationship are necessary. Among the terms suggested to describe sense of place such as 'home', 'place identity', 'place-based meaning' and 'settlement identity' etc., the 'home' is selected to represent our surrounding landscape. For more practical classification of home landscape, additional terms are suggested and defined based on both the relationships between human beings and nature, and between memory derived from previous experience and shared values with in the community. The additional terms which are the most important in the role of landscape character related to humans' are; ⅰ) Personal Landscape: Landscape of an individual human, which derives from previous personal experience; involves distinguishable character for a given person, and it is emotional and flexible depending on circumstances. ⅱ) Ordinary Landscape: Landscape of the 'common interest' between members of a community, which is acceptable as a surrounding for everyday daily life, it produces the richness and variety of landscape. ⅲ) Kernel Landscape: Landscape of the 'common ground' which is acceptable to the majority members of the community, and it provides variety and stability for periods of time, and it could strongly represent community attitudes toward nature. ⅳ) Prototype Landscape: Landscape as the 'common denominator' of overall community from past to present and towards the future, which encompasses all the kernel landscape throughout history. It provides a sense of place, balances the homogeneity of character throughout overall communities. Some part of this can be shared throughout history to shape an overall sense of place. It can also represent short terms fashions. For a prototype landscape to reveal sense of place, there are a couple of points which we should underline the commencing point. Firstly, understanding the relationship between humans and nature should be based on a given character of surroundings. Secondly, reoccurring landscape elements which have sustained in history can lead to sense of place, and should be reviewed the influences between nature and humans.
The purpose of this study that was based on the theory review about the practical use necessity of school landscape was to survey on the awareness of elementary school teachers about the applications of school landscape for environmental education. This study was carried out through the review of literature, the questionnaire to 132 elementary school teachers in Seongnam City. The findings derived from this study were as follows : First, School landscape is an important field as environmental education resource for the improvement of school environmental education. Especially, for the improvement of environmental sensitivity through field-experience learning, the practical applications of elementary school landscape is very important and urgent in aspects of environmental education theory, accessibility, and convenience. Second, Most of responded teachers give an affirmative answer about the field-experience learning for school environmental education and the necessity of practical use of school landscape for field-experience learning. Several the improvement to use elementary school landscape for environmental education being suggested by teachers are the increase of financial support, the magnification of school area, and the school landscape planning and design in consideration of environmental education by landscape architect expert. Third, Above half of teachers don't agree to use the roof garden for environmental education because of the safety of students and the school building construction. Fourth, Teachers are more satisfied with the status of school landscape maintenance than the practical usability of school landscape in aspect of environmental education and the facilities in school landscape. Teachers think that the most important functions and roles of school landscape is psychological factor.
The layer technique is to produce many memorable scenes by generating layers of new experiences on the existing ones as it is adding the cognitive layers on to the visually seen landscape. Its need is high for places whose landscape itself influences perception, value or expression and which determines the spatial and quality standards. The existing floor plan-based design methods have failed to be useful in generating complex visual experiences. In order to maximize the aesthetical landscape experiences in landscape planning, cognitive layers are needed which complement the input of adequate cognitive elements and the inter-element relationships. Here, layers are utilized to change the arrangement of the landscape elements and coordinate the cognitive flow so that the images could be connected and imagination could occur. A case in point is Anhyun Village in Gochang where physically distinctive layers are additionally set to make a visual experience enriching. The new landscape layers discover the fact that it provides diversity in experiencing the village landscape and forming the sense of beauty and that it is deeply immersed into the daily life of the village. Meanwhile, Guwau Village in Taebaek is an example showing the usefulness of various-layer setting in landscape planning in setting effective circulation planning. That is, the bottom line is the spacing-starting where and making it stay where for a few seconds, and the visual layers. It is also critical to encourage inducing circulation so that layers of the senses stimulating five senses could intervene. Lastly, Mulgeon-ri in Namhae is a case which directly made a parallel of the physical layers of the landscape composition and the cognitive layers of the landscape experience. Artificial landscape planning is mostly about manipulating of visual traits that people feel beautiful, but the layer technique is linked to how to make experiences enriching and renewed.
