  • The thermomechanical properties of materials from the system Al2O3-SiO2-TiO2(Tialite-Mullite) were investigated by correlating the thermal expansion anisotroypy, flexural strength and Young's modulus with grain size and atructural microcracking during cooling. Microcracking temperatures were determined by measuring the hysteresis of the thermal expansion anisotropy with dilatometry. Single phase Aluminium Titanate is a low strength material, while composites with more than 10 vol% mullite as second phase enhance the Young's modulus, thermal expansion coefficient and room temperature strength.

  • A glass-ceramics material of composition %SiO_2$: 38.50, $Al_2O_3$: 26.00, $Na_2O$: 18.00, CaO: 6.00, MgO: 4.00, $TiO_2$: 7.50 was strengthened by coating a series of glazes$(SiO_2-B_2O_3-Al_2O_3-CaO-PbO-Na_2O-)$, which has lower thermal expansion coefficient than that of the glass-ceramics. The thermal expansion coefficient of the glazes ranges $80~90{\times}10^{-7}$cm/cm/$^{\circ}C$, whereas that of the glass-ceramics is $115{\times}10^{-7}$cm/cm/$^{\circ}C$. The glass-ceramics was identified to be composed of nepheline, carnegieite low form, and meta sodium silicate crystal by X-ray diffraction phase analysis. The glaze, having lower melting point and appropriate thermal expansion coefficient, was tried to be stable and good at secondary heat treatment.

  • The purpose of this study is to contribute to the development of a source of cultural contents by proposing extension possibility of cultural contents based on an original source. To this end, this article examined an aspect of Sherlock Holmes contents based on the novel "Sherlock Holmes" published in 1887. It has been produced as 217 different contents from 1899 to 2017 after publishing the novel Sherlock Holmes, and consequently, it has become the best material for the study of the expansion of contents. As a research method, we examined the concept of Transmedia with the change of media environment. Next, we examined the production method of "Sherlock Holmes" contents, analyzed the transformation factors according to each media, and presented the expansion of contents through "Sherlock Holmes" contents.

  • Generally, Invar alloy shows very low thermal expansion characteristics, lower than $2{\times}10^{-6}$/K approximately. To apply Fe-Ni-Co-C Invar alloy as a core material for large ampacity transmission line we studied the effects of magnetic properties on coefficient of thermal expansion. The coefficient of thermal expansion(CTE) suddenly decreases with addition of a little carbon(0.08%), increases with the increasing carbon and has a constant value at the composition over than 1.0%C. The trend of Curie temperature change with carbon is similar with that of CTE. Therefore, the CTE has a linear relationship with Curie temperature. However, the CTE linearly decreases with the ratio of saturation magnetization and Curie temperature(${\sigma}_s/T_c$).

  • This study discusses a non-contact optical technique (electronic speckle pattern interferometry) that is well suited for thermal deformation measurement without any surface preparation and compensating process. Fiber reinforced plastics ($[0]_{16},\;[0/90]_{8S}$) were analyzed by ESPI to determine their thermal expansion coefficients. The thermal expansion coefficient of the transverse direction of a uniaxial composite is evaluated as $48.78{\times}10^{-6}(1/^{\circ}C)$. Also, the thermal expansion coefficient of the cross-ply laminate $[0/90]_{8S}$ is numerically estimated as $3.23{\times}10^{-6}(1/^{\circ}C)$ that is compared with that measured by ESPI.

  • This paper deals with the measurement theory and technique of linear expansion coefficient for solid material using Michelson interferometer. The Michelson interferometer produces interference fringes by splitting a beam of monochromatic light so that one beam strikes a fixed mirror and the other a movable mirror. When the reflected beams are brought back together, an interference pattern results. Precise distance measurements until a quarter of wave length can be made with the Michelson interferometer by moving the mirror and counting the interference fringes which move by a photo diode. This paper represents the application of Michelson interferometer for measuring infinitesimal length system and shows the measurement method of linear expansion coefficients for various materials like copper, aluminum and iron. the results are good agreement with theoretical value within margin of error for each materials.

  • The Neumann Expansion method has been used for evaluating the response variability of three dimensional truss structure resulting from the spatial variability of material properties with the aid of the finite element method, and in conjunction with the direct Monte Carlo simulation methods. The spatial variabilites are modeled as three-dimensional stochastic field. Yamazaki 〔1〕 has extended the Neumann Expansion method to the plane-strain problem to obtain the response variability of 2 dimensional stochastic systems. This paper presents the extension of the Neumann Expansion method to 3 dimensional stochastic systems. The results by the NEM are compared with those by the deterministic finite element analysis and by the direct Monte Carlo simulation method

  • To study invar alloy as a core material for large ampacity over-head transmission line which have high strength and low thermal expansion coefficient simultaneously, thermal expansion coefficient, physical properties and hardness of Fe-Ni-Co-xC alloy have been studied. It is necessary that invar alloy possess low thermal expansion coefficient and high strength for increased capacity over-head transmission line. In this paper we tried to find out the effect of carbon addition related with mechanical and physical properties. It was found that the thermal expansion coefficient and hardness were increased with carbon addition for whole composition range but the saturation magnetization was decreased except for the range of 0.1$\sim$0.4%C.

  • Waste glass has been increasingly used in industrial applications. One shortcoming in the utilization of waste glass for concrete production is that it can cause the concrete to be weakened and cracked due to its expansion by alkali-silica reaction(ASR). This study analyzed the ASR expansion and strength properties of concrete in terms of waste glass color(amber and emerald-green), and industrial by-products(ground granulated blast-furnace slag, fly ash). Specifically, the role of industrial by-products content in reducing the ASR expansion caused by waste glass was analyzed in detail. In addition, the feasibility of using ground glass for its pozzolanic property was also analyzed. The research result revealed that the pessimum size for waste glass was $2.5{\sim}1.2mm$ regardless of the color of waste glass. Moreover, it was found that the smaller the waste glass is than the size of $2.5{\sim}1.2mm$, the less expansion of ASR was. Additionally, the use of waste glass in combination with industrial by-products had an effect of reducing the expansion and strength loss caused by ASR between the alkali in the cement paste and the silica in the waste glass. Finally, ground glass less than 0.075 mm was deemed to be applicable as a pozzolanic material.

  • The safety valve is the important equipment used to protect the pressure vessel and pressure facilities from overpressure by discharging the operation medium when the pressure of system is reaching the design pressure of the system. Some materials for a safety valve disk are studied in this paper. A studied safety valve has to resist sulfurous acid and nitric acid. etc. Furthermore teflon which is a general material of the valve easily sticks to a disk and a sliding part of the valve by thermal expansion. Therefore both teflon and stainless-steel are used to improve these problems. The analysis of the thermal expansion is conducted with commercial FEM software to improve the problems. Boundary conditions were temperature and load in this study. From the analysis, the thermal expansion of by teflon/stainless steel-made valve is lower than that of teflon-made valve under high temperature. Thus, teflon/stainless steel-made valve is safe and no malfunction by thermal expansion.
