  • The end effect of a linear induction motor (LIM) has been known for several decades, especially in high speed operation. The exit part of the primary is not dealt as extensively as the entry part because of its minor effect. However, the exit part is one of the keys to weaken the dolphin effect, which occurs in high speed operation. In this paper, the concept of the virtual primary core is introduced, and chamfering of the primary outlet teeth is proposed to minimize the longitudinal end effect at the exit zone. For this, LIM for the high-speed train is designed and analyzed by using finite element method. Results confirm that chamfering can improve thrust performance effectively.

  • In this paper, we present two simulation methods to investigate the effect of excluding bit errors on generating the extrinsic information transfer (EXIT) chart for low density parity check (LDPC) and turbo codes. We utilized the simulation methods including and excluding bit errors to generate EXIT chart which was originally proposed for turbo codes. The generated EXIT charts for LDPC and turbo codes shows that the presented methods appropriately demonstrates the performance behaviours of iterative decoding for LDPC and turbo codes. Analysis on the simulation results demonstrates that the EXIT chart excluding the bit errors shows only a small part of the curves where the amount of information is too large.

  • We previously reported that Skp1, a component of the Skp1-Cullin-F-box protein (SCF) complex essential for the timely degradation of cell cycle proteins by ubiquitination, physically interacts with Bfa1, which is a key negative regulator of the mitotic exit network (MEN) in response to diverse checkpoint-activating stresses in budding yeast. In this study, we initially investigated whether the interaction of Skp1 and Bfa1 is involved in the regulation of the Bfa1 protein level during the cell cycle, especially by mediating its degradation. However, the profile of the Bfa1 protein did not change during the cell cycle in skp1-11, which is a SKP1 mutant allele in which the function of Skp1 as a part of SCF is completely impaired, thus indicating that Skp1 does not affect the degradation of Bfa1. On the other hand, we found that the skp1-12 mutant allele, previously reported to block G2-M transition, showed defects in mitotic exit and cytokinesis. The skp1-12 mutant allele also revealed a specific genetic interaction with ${\Delta}bfa1$. Bfa1 interacted with Skp1 via its 184 C-terminal residues (Bfa1-D8) that are responsible for its function in mitotic exit. In addition, the interaction between Bfa1 and the Skp1-12 mutant protein was stronger than that of Bfa1 and the wild type Skp1. We suggest a novel function of Skp1 in mitotic exit and cytokinesis, independent of its function as a part of the SCF complex. The interaction of Skp1 and Bfa1 may contribute to the function of Skp1 in the mitotic exit.

  • Emergency lights and exit signs are an indispensable part of safety precautions for effective evacuation in case of emergency in public buildings. These emergency sign indicates safe escape routes and emergency doors, using an internationally recognizable sign. However visibility of those signs drops drastically in case of emergency situations like fire smoke, etc. and loss of visibility causes serious problems for safety evacuation. This paper propose a novel emergency light and exit sign built-in with Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) Beacon to assist the emergency self-guiding evacuation using devices for crisis and emergency management to avoid panic condition inside the buildings. In this approach, the emergency light and exit sign with the BLE beacons deployed in the indoor environments and the smart devices detect their indoor positions, direction to move, and next exit sign position from beacon messages and interact with map server in the Internet / Intranet over the available LTE and/or Wi-Fi network connectivity. The map server generate an optimal emergency exit path according to the nearest emergency exit based on a novel graph generation method for less route computation for each smart device. All emergency exit path data interfaces among three system components, the emergency exit signs, map server, and smart devices, have been defined for modular implementation of our emergency evacuation system. The proposed exit sign experimental system has been deployed and evaluated in real-time building environment thoroughly and gives a good evidence that the modular design of the proposed exit sign system and a novel approach to compute emergency exit path route based on the BLE beacon message, map server, and smart devices is competitive and viable.

  • This paper examines the effects of magnetic induction attenuation on current distribution in the exit regions of the Faraday-type, non-equilibrium plasma Magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) generator by numerical calculation using cesium-seeded helium. Calculations show that reasonable magnetic induction attenuation creates a very uniform current distribution near the exit region of generator channel. Furthermore, it was determined that the current distribution in the middle part of generator is negligible, and the output electrodes can be used without large ballast resistors. In addition, the inside resistance of the exit region and the current concentration at the exit electrode edges, both decrease with the attenuation of magnetic flux density. The author illustrates that the exit electrodes of the diagonal Faraday-type, non-equilibrium plasma MHD generator should be arranged in the attenuation region of the magnetic induction, in order to improve the electrical parameters of the generator.

  • Recently, as the high speed railway becomes more common, new environmental problems such as noise around tunnels are appearing. When a high speed train enters a tunnel, a compression wave in the tunnel is generated and propagated toward the tunnel exit at a sonic speed. When it reaches the tunnel exit, a part of compression wave radiates as a pulse typed impulse wave to the outside of tunnel. The impulse wave has an explosive noise. When the impulse wave is propagated around a village, it induces a serious noise or other problems to the resident. In order to solve these engineering problems, it is important to investigate the radiation characteristics of the impulse wave radiated from the tunnel exit. In this study, the effect of the length and angle of the baffle plate at the tunnel exit on the impulse wave radiated from the tunnel exit was investigated by numerical analysis. As a results, the baffle plate greatly affected the propagation of impulse wave.

  • Four major scarab beetles, Ectinohoplia rufipes, Adoretus tenuimaculatus, Exomala orientalis and Popillia quadriguttata were obserbved in golf courses. Morphological characters of adults and larvae, feeding habit, mounds by grubs, and outbreak time were inbestigated. Body lengths of E. rufipes and A. tenuimaculatus were 11.5mm and 9.7-11.3mm, respectively and those of E. orientalis and P. quadriguttata were 8.0-13.5mm and 7.6-12.7mm, respectively. Adult of E. rufipes had a tendency to raise hind legs during the feeding and mating but showed no death feigning. On the contrary, A. tenuimaculatus adult did not raise its hind legs during the feding and showed death feigning and dropped to earth when disturbed. E. orientalis adults were mainly found from the flowers of chestnut trees in the daytime and P. quadriguttata adults were chiefly found from soft leaves of herbaceous plants in golf courses. White grubs of E. rufipes and A. tenuimaculatus did not have longitudinal and transversal seatae on anal part but setae on the raster were hooked. The shape of anal slit was Y-shape in E. rufipes and crescent-shape in A. tenuimaculatus. White grubs of E. orientalis had ten to sixteen longitudinal setae on raster and those of P. quadriguttata had medially two conspicuous rows of six or seven shorter straight setae forming a V. Adults of E. rufipes mainly fed on front part of leaves but those of A. tenuimaculatus fed on hind part of leaves. Mounds by earthworms and white grubs were different depending on species. Earthworm piled up sticky soil around exit hole but E. orientalis adult scattered soil one part of exit hole and A. tenuimaculatus adult scattered soil evenly around exit hole. Outbreak time of E. rufipes and A. tenuimaculatus was early May and that of E. orientalis and P. quadriguttata was late May.

  • This study aimed to report a case of infant who presented with a prenatal ultrasound diagnosis of agnathia, polyhydramnios followed by a review of previous studies. As widely acknowledge, agnathia is a complex lethal malformation characterized by absent mandible, microstomia, microglossia and ear anomaly which are secondary results to a defect of the first branchial auh. Newborn infants with agnathia often suffer from airway obstruction, causing fatal respiratory failure. The most difficult part of treating those newborns is to keep the airway patent. Therefore, as early airway management planning as possible is the most important part. Airway management was achieved with tracheotomy through an ex utero intrapartum treatment procedure(EXIT). The case of this infant, reporting here, was underwent tracheotomy with preservation of uteroplacental blood flow and gas exchange.

  • The aim of this study is to numerically investigate a compact reformer system currently under development and to design a better reforming system with more efficient heat transfer and reforming reactions. Numerical models were established separately for both the combustion part and the reforming reaction part. A comparison between the calculation results and experimental data showed that the concentration of the reformate at the exit of the reforming system was in good agreement with the measured data, but for the temperature at the exit little difference between them was found. After checking the validity of the numerical models, the heat transfer between the combustion gas and reforming catalysts was estimated and the behavior of the catalyst bed was investigated as a function of the operation parameters.
