A Study on Health/Illness Concepts in Hospitalized Children (입원아동이 지각한 건강과 질병개념에 관한 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the health and illness concepts of hospitalized children. The subjects were 129 hospitalized children from 3 to 12 years old in one general hospital. Data were collected through semistructured interviews by authors. This study was conducted from Jun. 1, 2000 to Dec. 31, 2000. Data were coded and categorized by content analysis. The results were as follows : 1. Perceived health concept were physical well-being, food, exercise, powerfulness, emotional stability, obeidence, cleanliness, sleep and ability of social adaptation. 2. Perceived health behavior to maintain health were food, treatment, exercise, cleanliness, obeidence, sleep, emotional stability, power-fulness and psychological stability, physical well-being. 3. Perceived prevention of illness were food, cleanliness, treatment, exercise, obedience, sleep, powerfulness, psychological stability, emotional stability, recreation and ability of social adaptation. 4. Perceived causes of illness were illness, trauma and food. 5. Perceived treatment of illness were treatment, sleep, rest, food, obedience, emotional stability, psychological stability, cleanliness, exercise and powerfulness.

Effects of Coffee on Physical Performance in Mice

  • In this study, coffee was shown to effectively inhibit L6 muscle cell death and ATP reduction induced by hydrogen peroxide damage. Additionally, two weeks of oral administration of 7 mg/kg coffee extracts to mice resulted in a 33% increase in treadmill running time relative to that seen in the distilled water administered group. Blood analysis showed decreased lactate content, which was increased by exercise. Thus, these data suggest that coffee intake may enhance exercise capacity and inhibit damage due to excessive exercise.

High Fat Diet or Exercise Training Alters Hepatic Total and Phospholipid fatty Acid Compositions in Rats (고지방식이 및 운동훈련이 흰쥐 간조직의 총지방산 및 인지질 지방산패턴에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of high fat diet and/or endurance exercise training on hepatic total and phospholipid(PL) fatty acid compositions were evaluated in rats fed one of the following diets for 31 days. control diet(CD, 5 wt% corn oil) or high fat diet(HFD, 35 wt% corn oil). Half of the rats in each group were exercise-trained regularly on a treadmill for 90 minutes/day during the entire feeding period. Total and PL fatty acid compositions of hepatic lipid extracts were determined by a gas-liquid chromatograph),. Endurance exercise training did not change the daily food intake, but significantly reduced body weight gain and feed efficiency ratio of rats, which were most prominent in animals fed HFD. Exercise training did not significantly change the percentages of ∑saturated fatty acids (SFA) and ∑polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUEA), but decreased the percentage of ∑monounsaturated fatty acids(MUFA) in hepatic total fatty acids, which might be associated with the decrease in (equation omitted) 9-desaturation index of hepatic total fatty acid metabolism. Exercise training significantly lowered the percentages of 16 : 0 and 22 : 5$\omega$3, and increased the percentages of 20 : 1 and 20 : 3$\omega$3 in both total and PL fatty acid compositions in rat liver. Both total fatty acid and PL fatty acid compositions of rat liver responded more sensitively to changes in dietary fat content than to endurance exercise training in this study. Feeding HFD, whoch contains high level of linoleic acid(LA, 18 : 2$\omega$6), significantly decreased the percentages of ∑SFA and $\Sigma$MUFA, and increased the percentages of ∑PUFA and ∑$\omega$6 fatty acids of hepatic total fatty acids. Hepatic total fatty acid composition was affected by dietary fat content and dietary fatty acid composition more sensitively than those found in hepatic PL fatty acid composition. HFD significantly decreased most of desaturation indices, while exercise training significantly decreased elongation index(20 : 5$\omega$3⇒22 : 5$\omega$3) of hepatic total and PL fatty acid metabolism in rats. A Survey on the Need for Mobile Application Content for Self-Management of Patients with Osteoarthritis (골관절염 대상자의 자기관리 모바일앱 개발을 위한 콘텐츠 요구도 조사)

  • Purpose: This study aimed to identify and prioritize the content needs of patients with osteoarthritis (OA) for developing self-management mobile applications. Methods: A total of 126 participants with OA were recruited from two orthopedic hospitals. They completed the self-report questionnaires after providing written informed consent. The Borich needs assessment model was used to assess the perceived level of competence and perceived level of importance regarding 21 items for self-management of OA. The collected data were weighted and ranked in order of priority. Results: The top five content items needed by OA patients were 'How to avoid excessive use of the joints' (15.03); 'Lifestyle tips on the prevention and management of arthritis' (13.69); 'Exercise types and procedures for OA' (12.54); 'Good and bad exercises for the joints' (9.80); and 'Precautions for exercise (duration, frequency, safety)' (8.88). Need rankings related to causes and treatment of OA were relatively low. Conclusion: OA patients requested self-management competencies that should be practiced in daily activities to reduce the discomfort. The results of this study have practical implications for defining the content of self-management applications for patients with OA. Based on the results, developing a self-management intervention program for OA patients using a mobile is recommended.

How High School Mathematics Teachers Use New Textbook : A Case Study from China

  • In this paper, we propose a theoretical framework for Chinese high school mathematics teachers use new textbooks based on the work of Remillard (1999) and Chau (2014). Based on this framework, a multiple case approach was used to investigate how two high school mathematics teachers from Shanghai use new textbooks. The results suggest that in the curriculum mapping arena, both the novice teacher and the expert teacher often planned to appropriate the unit content, and sometimes planned to add supplemental content. When organizing the unit content, novice teacher always planned to follow the new textbook in sequence, while expert teacher often would follow the new textbook in sequence, but sometimes planned to rearrange the unit content. In the design arena, both the novice teacher and the expert teacher tended to appropriate the introduced tasks and definitions. The novice teacher often planned to appropriate the example problems and exercise problems, while the expert teacher often intended to flexibly use the example problems and exercise problems. In the construction arena, the novice teacher seldom adjusted the planned tasks; in contrast, the expert teacher adjusted the planned tasks more frequently. In the reflection arena, the novice teacher often thought she should improve the mathematics tasks, while the expert teacher almost always thought he needed to improve the mathematics tasks. The framework shown in this paper provides a tool to investigate how mathematics teachers use textbooks.

Development of Kinect-Based Pose Recognition Model for Exercise Game (운동 게임을 위한 키넥트 센서 기반 운동 자세 인식 모델 개발)

  • Recently there has been growing popularity in exergame, such as Wii Sport or Xbox Fitness game, which enables users to get physical exercise while playing the games. In such experienced exercise games, the user's posture recognition is very important to find out exactly how much the users need to take their body posture as compared to the proper posture. This paper proposes a new exercise posture recognition model designed for the exercise game content for the elderly. The proposed model is based on extracting feature points of a skeleton model provided by the Kinect sensor to generate the feature vectors to recognize the user's exercise posture information. This paper describes the design and implementation of the exercise posture recognition model and demonstrates the feasibility of this proposed posture recognition model through a simple experiment. The experimental results showed 94.52% of average accordance rate for 12 exercise postures of 10 participants.

Antioxidant Effect of Garlic Supplement against Exercise-Induced Oxidative Stress in Rats (운동으로 유발된 산화 스트레스와 마늘의 항산화 작용)

  • This study was to investigate lipid peroxidation, antioxidant enzyme activity and DNA damage after exercise, and the protective effect of garlic against exercise-induced oxidative stress. Male Sprague-Dawley rats(4 weeks old) were randomly divided into three groups of 6 rats each; control group(Con) without garlic and exercise, Ex group with exercise alone, and Ex-G group with 2% garlic and exercise. For 4 weeks, rats were given diets containing 15% corn oil and 1% cholesterol with or without garlic. The swimming was selected as a model for exercise performance. Rats swam for 40 min a day, for 5 days a week. Group Ex and Ex-G showed significant lowering in body weight gain and fat accumulation compared to control. No significant changes were observed in levels of plasma cholesterol and triglyceride among three groups, demonstrating that exercise and garlic had no effects on changes of blood lipid. This finding of blood lipid seems to be due to higher plant sterol content in corn oil. The DNA tail moment of lymphocytes showed greater tendency in Ex and Ex-G than in control, but garlic supplements failed to suppress DNA damages. Compared to control, Ex had higher plasma TBARS which was lowered to the control's level in Ex-G with 2% garlic supplementation(p<0.05). Ex-G led to a higher hepatic superoxide dismutase(SOD) activity than control and Ex(p<0.05). Activity of hepatic catalase was also increased in Ex-G, while in Ex it was significantly low(p<0.05). It seemed that TBARS levels were related to the activities of SOD and catalase, and that garlic contributed to increasing the enzyme activities and led to decrease of TBARS. These results demonstrate that lipid peroxidation and DNA damage occur as a consequences of oxidative stress after exercise, and that antioxidant defense against oxidative stress could be enhanced by garlic supplementation through the induction of antioxidant enzymes. However, further investigations should be done on the garlic effect on DNA damage.

Mobile exercise monitoring for personalized exercise prescription (맞춤형 운동처방을 위한 모바일 운동 모니터링)

  • This study was carried out the exercise monitoring utilizing mobile device which is easily accessible and personalized exercise prescription based on it. For this, a variety of exercise monitoring and status of those were investigated and suggested the potential of personalized exercise prescription. If individual users send their body and vital informations using a mobile device, all informations are collected in u-Fitness center. After then exercise expert provide a customized prescription based on the collected information and feed data into database of u-Fitness center. System of U-Fitness center will provide the best personalized exercise prescription by automatically connecting to the content providers. In the future, a variety of mobile devices and services will work together and it can be evolved as an open platform that can be used for multiple services according to the needs of individual users on a single platform.

The Effects of A High-Fat Diet on Pro- and Macro-Glycogen Accumulation and Mobilization During Exercise in Different Muscle Fiber Types and Tissues in Rats

  • We investigated the effects of diet manipulation on pro- and macro-glycogen accumulation and mobilization during exercise in different kinds of muscle fiber and tissue. Thirty-two Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into groups representing one of two dietary conditions: high fat (HF, n=16) or standard chow (CHOW, n=16). Each dietary group was fm1her divided into control (REST, n=8) and exercise (EXE, n=8). After an eight-week dietary intervention period, the animals in EXE swam for 3 hours while the animals in REST remained at rest Skeletal muscle (soleus, red gastrocnemius and white gastrocnemius) and liver samples were then dissected out and used for analyses. 1here was no statistical difference in body weight between the animals in the HF and mow groups (p>.05). Three hours of exercise significantly increased plasma free fatty acid (FFA) concentration in the animals in the CHOW group but not in the animals in the HF group. Both citrate. synthase (CS) and $\beta$-hydroxyacyl dehydrogenase ($\beta$-HAD) activities in skeletal muscles were higher in the HF group than in the mow group. CS and $\beta$-HAD activities were also the highest in red gastrocnemius and the lowest in white gastrocnemius. At both time points (i.e., rest and immediately after exercise) intramuscular triglyceride (IMTG) and liver TG concentrations were significantly higher in the HF compared to the CHOW. IMTG and liver TG changed selectively in the CHOW. Except in white gastrocnemius muscle, there was no significant difference in total glycogen content between HF and mow at rest. Although exercise significantly lowered total glycogen content in all groups and tissues (p<.05), the degree of reduction was markedly greater in the mow than in the HF. Whereas changes in proglycogen concentration showed a trend similar to those of total glycogen, alterations in macroglycogen concentrations clearly differed from those of total glycogen. Specifically, the degree of reduction of macroglycogen following three hours of exercise was substantially greater in the CHOW than in the HF. These results suggest that metabolic alterations induced by a long-term high fat diet may be caused by macro-glycogen rather than pro-glycogen.

The Effects of Capsaicin Intake with High-Fat Diet on Tissue Glycogen Contents in Exercise-Trained Rats (캡사이신 첨가 고지방식이가 운동시 조직 글리코겐 농도에 미치는 영향)

  • This study is to investigate the effects of capsaicin with high-fat diet on tissue glycogen contents in exercise-trained rats. Forty male Sprague-Dawley rats were offered a high-fat diet for 2 wks in individual cages and were exercise-trained by a animal treadmill running throughout the experimental period. After 2 wks of the prefeeding with high-fat diet, the rats were divided into two group: high-fat diet group(CON)and high-fat diet + capsaicin(0.014%) group(CAP). The rats were killed by decapitation at 10 hr(rest), 1 hr and 2 hr after treadmill running(27m/min, 6$^{\circ}$). Body weight and epididymal adipose tissure weight were significantly lower in CAP than in CON, but soleus muscle weight was not different between the two groups. Glycogen contents in liver, soleus and gastrocnemius white muscles were significantly lower in CAP than in CON at rest, 1 hr and 2 hr (p<0.05). However, glycogen content in gastrocnemius red muscle was significantly higher in CAP compared with CON at 2 hr after the exercise(p<0.05). These results indicate that capsaicin intake with high-fat diet would decrease glycogen contents in liver and muscle, however, this effect on glycogen metabolism could be changed by muscle type.
