  • This study was conducted for the evaluation of the effects of singing program combined with physical exercise on the physiologic changes, perception function and degree of depression. The subjects were the members of elderly women's glee club in D care center for the elderly, who have been singing for more than 6 months. 30 members were allocated to study group and 30 to control group. The singing program designed for both physical therapy and music therapy was consisted of initial physical exercise, singing art songs and classical song and the finishing physical exercise. This program was performed twice a week and about forth minutes was consumed for one session. We checked the heart rate, peripheral arterial oxygen saturation, perception function and degree of depression before and after the program. We used a pulse oxymeter to check the heart rate to oxygen saturation and a questionnaire for the evaluation of perception function and degree of depression. We need SPSS program for data analysis. The results of the investigated personnel complying with general characteristics were analyzed by frequency, two groups by t-test, data before and after the program by paired t-test, respectively. The results were as follows. 1) Heart rate after the program was significantly lower than that before program in test group(p<0.05). 2) Peripheral oxygen saturation after the program was significantly higher than that before the program(p<0.05). 3) Ability to match the right sign with a certain predetermined number was improved after the program. The frequency of wrong matching the sign with number before program was 30. But the frequency was decreased to 8 after the program. 4) Ability to calculate was improved after the program. The frequency of wrong calculation before the program was $1.10{\pm}1.94$. But the frequency after the program was decreased to $0.97{\pm}1.84$. 5) The degree of depression after the program($2.07{\pm}0.49$) was significantly lower than that before program(p<0.001). These results show that singing program combined with physical exercise improves the oxygen delivery to peripheral circulation, stability of heart function, the perception function(calculating and matching ability) and decreases the degree of depression. In conclusion, singing program combined with physical exercise can be used for the effective measure to improve the health of elderly and prevent dementia.

  • The purpose of this research was to examine the effect of dance sports for twelve weeks on physical self-efficacy in post-menopausal depression obese women. A total 38 women participated in this study, and they were divided into three groups: mild-depression group(n=9), light-depression group(n=14) and control group(n=15). For the exercise program in this study, a dance sports program performed at an intensity of heart rate reserve 50~80%, 60 minutes of exercise time, and the frequency of 3 times a week. Physical self-efficacy for mild-depression group after 12-week dance sports program was significantly increased compared to before the exercise. Although light-depression group and control group didn't show significant increase in physical self-efficacy, dance sports is expected to act positively on mental stability, such as depression and hope used as an effective tool to improve the quality of life. Furthermore, we expect a convergence is achieved between the sports science and medical research sectors.

  • Objectives: The purpose of this study is to investigate the research about using tuina therapy for depression and to determine its efficacy. Methods: All relevant articles were searched in the China National Knowledge Infrastructure using the terms 'tuina' and 'depression'. Results: Forty-one studies were selected, 34 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and 7 prospective studies. The Chinese Classification of Mental Disorders and Hamilton Depression Rating Scale were used most frequently as diagnostic criteria and an assessment tool, respectively. Conduction exercise therapy was used in all studies; in contrast, Zheng Xing exercise therapy was used in only 1 study of depression patients with neck vertebrae disease. In 9 RCTs that showed scores of more than 2 points on a modified Jadad scale, tuina therapy had significant antidepressant efficacy compared with conventional treatment. However, more high-quality studies are required. Conclusions: Tuina therapy has a valid therapeutic effect on depression according to studies published in China; if evidence accumulates from high-quality studies, it can be considered a non-pharmacologic treatment for depression in Korean medicine, as well.

Method: This was a descriptive study using a questionnaire. Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS-15) was used for examining depression, and other questionnaire were adopted and modified from the customized visiting health care service. Result: The 41 subjects displayed mild depression ($5.34{\pm}3.33$). The majority were non-smokers (73.2%) and non-drinkers (85%), and 81.1% of the subjects did light activities with 74.4 % performing regular exercise more than once per week. Perceived health status was above average in 70.7%, and feeling stress (70.7%), suicidal thoughts (12.2%) and abnomal KDSQ-C (29.3%) were shown in emotional and cognitive conditions. Depression had a significant relationship with regular exercise (t=3.61, p=.001), perceived health status (t=3.47, p=.041) and suicidal thoughts (t=2.85, p=.007). Conclusion: It is necessary to increase shelters for the elderly homeless and construct the system for examining not only their physical health but also their psychological problems, and to ensure long- term care recognizing their unique characteristics and needs, and their increasing number.

Methods: The design of this study was a nonequivalent control group pretest-posttest experiment. The sample was recruited among low back pain patients treated with epidural injections from an orthopedic specialty hospital. Participants were randomly assigned to a treatment group (n=25) or a comparison group (n=27). The treatment was a six week exercise program for low back pain. Data were collected from September to November 2011, and were analyzed using descriptive statistics, $x^2$-test, one-tailed t-test for independent samples, and Mann-Whitney U test using the SPSS/WIN 12.0 program. Results: Patients in the treatment group reported statistically significantly lower levels of back pain on flexion and extension, less daily living disability, and less depression than those in the comparison group. Conclusion: The back pain relief exercise program could be an effective adjunct nursing intervention for low back pain patients treated with epidural injections.
