A frequency domain response analysis is presented for building frames passively controlled by viscoelastic dampers, under harmonic ground excitation. Three different models are used to represent the linear dynamic force-deformation characteristics of viscoelastic dampers namely, Kelvin model, Linear hysteretic model and Maxwell model. The frequency domain solution is obtained by (i) an iterative pseudo-force method, which uses undamped mode shapes and frequencies of the system, (ii) an approximate modal strain energy method, which uses an equivalent modal damping of the system in each mode of vibration, and (iii) an exact method which uses complex frequency response function of the system. The responses obtained by three different methods are compared for different combinations of viscoelastic dampers giving rise to both classically and non-classically damped cases. In addition, the effect of the modelling of viscoelastic dampers on the response is investigated for a certain frequency range of interest. The results of the study are useful in appropriate modelling of viscoelastic dampers and in understanding the implication of using modal analysis procedure for building frames which are passively controlled by viscoelastic dampers against base excitation.
This paper examines the dynamic characteristics of a human carpal muscle through theoretical analysis and experiment. The carpal muscle was modeled as a 1-DOF vibration system and vibration response due to a ramp function force was calculated. The electromyogram signal corresponding to the muscle excitation force was measured, and the excitation force function of an envelope curve from the electromyogram signal was extracted. The ramp input function of electrical stimulation to the carpal muscle was applied by using a device for functional electrical stimulation, and the angular displacements corresponding to steady state response were measured. Theoretical calculations of the vibration response displacements were compared with the experimental results of the angular displacements, and have shown a good agreement with the result that is linearly proportional to the excitation force magnitude. As a result, the relationship between the input current of the electrical stimulation and the excitation force magnitude was inferred. The result was shown that it can be applied to develop rehabilitation training devices.
Accurate prediction of the radiated noise is important to reduce the noise of the washing machine. It is also necessary to predict the excitation force accurately because excitation force can induce noise. In order to predict the excitation force acting on the washing machine, this paper conducts source identification method by use of phase reference spectrum. In this method, the transfer function between the cabinet and the motor through FEM and the measured response from the surface of the cabinet is used. The analysis of the radiation noise from the identified exciting force has been investigated. The comparison between the predicted SPL and the measured SPL at 1m apart from the front side of the washing machine showed good tendency.
Rotatory two-phase transverse flux machine(TFM) is a relatively new type of motor with high power density, high torque, and low speed in comparison to conventional electrical motors. However, it has some shortcomings,.i.e. complex construction and high possibility of the magnetically induced vibration due to its inherent structure. This paper investigates the characteristics of the magnetic force and the torque in the rotatory two-phase TFM by using the 3-D finite element method and the spectral analysis. This research shows that the average torque decreases and that the torque ripple increases as the phase delay increases. It also shows that the unbalanced magnetic force is one of the dominant excitation forces in this machine. And it proposes a new topology of rotatory two-phase TFM to eliminate the unbalanced magnetic force.
A practical process to optimize engine mounts on construction equipment is presented in this research. Transmitted force from the engine is estimated by using stiffness of the mount rubber which varies with frequency, amplitude and pre-load, and by the engine excitation force that comes from piston mass and gas pressure and so on. The transmitted force is measured through TPA(Transfer Path Analysis) and is then compared with the estimated force. The optimum mount position and stiffness are solved using MATLAB. The result shows the improvement on engine mount vibration.
Quantification of road noise is a challenging issue in the development of tire noise since its transfer paths are complicated. In this paper, a simplified model to estimate the road noise is developed. Transfer path of the model is from wheel to interior. The method uses the wheel excitation force estimated throughout inverse method. In inversion procedure, the Tikhonov regularization method is used to reduce the inversion error. To estimate the wheel excitation force, the vibration of knuckle is measured and transfer function between knuckle and wheel center is also measured. The wheel excitation force is estimated by using the measured knuckle vibration and the inversed transfer function. Finally interior noise due to wheel force is estimated by multiplying wheel excitation force in the vibro-acoustic transfer function. This vibro-acoustic transfer function is obtained throughout measurement. The proposed method is validated by using cleat excitation method. Finally, it is applied to the estimation of interior noise of the vehicle with different types of tires during driving test.
Earthquake can occur anywhere in the world and it is essential to design important members in special structures based on maximum possible forces that can be produced in them under severe earthquake. In addition, since the earthquake is an accidental phenomena and there are no similar earthquakes, therefore the possibility of strong earthquakes should be taken into account in earthquake-resistant design of important structures. Based on this viewpoint, finding the critical acceleration which maximizes internal forces is an essential factor in structural design. This paper proposes critical excitation method to compute the critical acceleration in design of important members in special structures. These critical accelerations are computed so that the columns' internal shear force at the base of the structure at each time step is maximized under constraints on ground motion. Among computed critical accelerations (of each time step), the one which produces maximum internal shear force is selected. A numerical example presents to show the efficiency of critical excitation method in determining the maximum internal shear force and base moment under variety of constraints. The results show that these method can be used to compute the resonant earthquake which have large enough effective duration of earthquake strong motion (between 12.86 sec to 13.38 sec) and produce the internal shear force and base moment for specific column greater than the same value for selected earthquakes in constructing the critical excitation (for different cases about 2.78 to 1.29 times the San Fernando earthquake). Therefore, a group of them can be utilized in developing the response spectrum for design of special structures.
This paper investigates the magnetic excitation force of a surface-mounted permanent magnet (SPM) motor according to the change of pole/slot combination. The characteristics of magnetic flux and radial magnetic force (RMF) due to pole/slot combination were analyzed by using magnetic circuit analysis. Also, the RMF of motors with the variable pole/slot combination was numerically simulated by using the finite element analysis to verify the result of the magnetic circuit analysis. This research shows that RMF ripple is reduced when the number of pole is smaller than the number of slot.
This paper presents a result of the mechanical noise and vibration analysis as well as the electrical characteristics analysis of the permanent magnet(PM) motor according to the driving method that is Brushless DC(BLDC) drive and Brushless AC(BLAC) drive. To do that, the characteristics of the PM motor, which have the same output power but different driving method, are investigated. At that time, the characteristics such as torque, torque ripple and flux density, and so on, are obtained by finite element analysis(FEA). Besides, noise and vibration are obtained by spectrum analysis. The magnetic noise is defined as noise generated from vibrations due to electromagnetic excitation force. In this paper, the electromagnetic excitation force is analyzed and design process of noise reduction is proposed. Finally, The validity of the analysis results is verified by test.
The objective of this paper is to get excitation forces of the engine at each of the brackets for the prediction of the vehicle interior noise by the powertrain. A powertrain geometry model is produced by CATIA and its FE model is made by MSC/Patran. A vibration mode analysis and a running mode analysis are experimentally implemented. After getting a satisfied MAC value by doing a correlation about a measured mode analysis value and analyzed value through MSC/Nastran software, all components are assembled through MSC/ADAMS software which is a dynamic analysis tool. We can predict the vibration of brackets which is the last points to occur the force of the engine combustion by analyzing the combustion force produced by engine mechanism.
