This paper presents the effects of excess air factors(0.84${\sim}$0.90) and opened throttle area ratios(AR=0.15${\sim}$0.25) on the emission and performance of a small spark-ignition gasoline engine. The engine used in this paper was a single cylinder, diaphragm carburetor, two-stroke, air-cooled 26cc engine for brush cutter. The rpm, torque, fuel consumption and CO emission were measured under the four different excess air factors and three different opened area ratios conditions on the engine loads respectively. The results showed that the rpm was decreased and torque was increased at increasing load, the maximum power and minimum fuel consumption could be obtained critical rpm on each throttle opened area ratios and brake specific fuel consumption was decreased 13${\sim}$17%, CO emissions was decreased 21${\sim}$38% at excess air factor 0.90 than 0.84.

This study is theoretically examined the influences on the performance of diesel engine super¬charged by exhaust gas turbine with the change of excess air factor, admission ratio, total efficien¬cy of turbine and compressor, scavenging pressure ratio, and scavenging temperature. In this study, all calculations are carried out by computer, and the theoretical engine performance is com¬pared with the actual engine performance which is offered from engine manufacturer. Following results are acquired by this study. The mean effective pressure is increased with decrease of excess air factor or increase of scavenging pressure ratio. As the admission ratio or total efficiency of tur¬bine is increased, the mean effective pressure is increased but the specific fuel consumption is decreased. Mean calculation error compared with the actual engine performance is under 5 per¬cents, therefore, this calculation method can be used in the design of diesel engine.

In this study, the combustion and exhaust emission characteristics in a gasoline direct injection engine with variations of the bio-ethanol-gasoline blending ratio and the excess air factor were investigated. To investigate the effects of the excess air factor and the bio-ethanol blends with gasoline, combustion characteristics such as the in-cylinder combustion pressure, rate of heat release (ROHR), and the fuel consumption rate were analyzed. The reduction of exhaust emissions such as carbon monoxide (CO), unburned hydrocarbon (HC), and nitrogen oxides ($NO_x$) were compared with those of gasoline fuel with various excess air factors. The results showed that the peak combustion pressure and ROHR of bio-ethanol blends were slightly higher and were increased as bio-ethanol blending ratio is increased. Brake specific fuel consumption increased for a higher bio-ethanol blending ratio. The exhaust emissions decreased as the bio-ethanol blending ratio increased under all experimental conditions. The exhaust emissions of bio-ethanol fuels were lower than those of gasoline.
Various researches have been conducted for the reduction of NOx at the combustion furnace and exhaust gas recirculation method is commonly used technology for NOx reduction. The present research adopted coanda nozzles at the outside pipes of furnace to entrain the exhaust gas for the exhaust gas recirculation and the mixed gas was ejected to the tangential direction to cause the swirl flow in the furnace. The combustion flow characteristics in the exhaust gas recirculation burner with coanda nozzle has been elucidated by analyzing the swirl flow streamlines, temepraure and reaction rate distribution in the furnace. The exhaust gas entrained flow rate has been investigated by changing the excess air factor and coanda nozzle gap and the exhaust gas entrained flow rate increased with the increase of excess air factor and it decreased with the increase of coanda nozzle gap. The mean temperature at the exit plane of exhaust gas decreased with the excess air factor and it was little affected by the increase of coanda nozzle gap. The NOx mass fraction at the exhaust gas exit plane remarkably decreased with the excess air factor and it was also little affected by the increase of coanda nozzle gap.

The effectiveness with which evaporative cooling can be used in Korea was analysed by making use of weather data of 15cities in a past decade. In ASHRAE comfort chart for a still air atmospheric condition was divided into two dimensional array, 14 zones by effective temperature and 10 zones by relative humidity, and all hours of weather condition in those zones were. computed from every 4 hours weather data in a past decade. From this computation obtained were for 15 cities : 1. average annual total hours above $23^{\circ}C$ ET 2. effective temperatures with $5\%$ excess factor, and 3. ratios of all hours in wet (above $25.6^{\circ}C$ WBT), intermediate $(22^{\circ}C\;to\;25.6^{\circ}C\;WBT)$, and dry $(below\;22^{\circ}C\;WBT)$ area to total hours in whole area on comfort chart beyond $23^{\circ}C$ ET to effective temperature of $5\%$ excess factor. It was shown from this computational result that in Korea evaporative cooling was not effective for building and residential comfort air conditioning but could be useful for comfort air conditioning in industry and industrial air conditioning, depending upon the air stream velocity and the type of application.

Engine torque, specific fuel consumption and MBT spark advance of a domestic automotive engine fueled with methanal-gasoline blends or straight methanal were studied under steady state condition and compared to those obtained with gasoline. The effects of adding methanal to gasoline on engine performance were studied with or without any carburetor modification. At first, the engine was operated without any modification. Next, the diameters of metering orifices in carburetor were modified to give the same excess air factor regardless of fuel type under each fixed engine operating condition. Finally, the diameters of metering orifices in carburetor were modified to give the same excess air factor for 15% mixture of methanal in gasoline by volume as for gasoline with standard metering orifices in carburetor. The effects of adding methanal to gasoline on engine torque, specific energy consumption and MBT spark advance can be explained on the basis of change in stoichiometry caused by the addition of methanal to gasoline.
0.75BF-0.25BT ceramics were prepared by sintering at $980-1040^{\circ}C$ in air or under atmosphere powder. A sample with 1 mole %-excess $Bi_2O_3$ was also prepared to compensate for $Bi_2O_3$-evaporation. Physical and piezoelectric properties of these three samples were compared. When the sintering temperature increased from $980^{\circ}C$ to $1040^{\circ}C$, the density of the sample sintered in air decreased continuously due to Bi-evaporation. Due to the suppression of Bi-evaporation, the sample sintered under atmosphere powder had a higher density at sintering temperatures above $1000^{\circ}C$ than did the sample sintered in air. The addition of 1 mole %-excess $Bi_2O_3$ successfully compensated for Bi-evaporation and kept the density at the higher value until $1020^{\circ}C$. Grain size increased continuously when the sintering temperature increased from 980 to $1040^{\circ}C$, irrespective of the sintering atmosphere. When the sintering temperature increased, the piezoelectric constant ($d_{33}$) and the electromechanical coupling factor ($k_p$) increased for all samples. The sample with 1 mole % excess-$Bi_2O_3$ showed the highest density and the best piezoelectric properties at sintering temperature of $1020^{\circ}C$.

Compression ratio is an important factor affecting engine performance and emission characteristics since thermal efficiency of spark ignition engine can be theoretically improved by increasing compression ratio. In order to evaluate the effect of compression ratio change in HCNG engine, natural gas engine was employed using HCNG30 (CNG 70 vol%, hydrogen 30 vol%). Combustion and emission characteristics of CNG and HCNG fuel was analyzed with respect to the change of compression ratio at each operating condition. The results showed that thermal efficiency improved and $CH_4$, $CO_2$ emission decreased with the increase in compression ratio while $NO_x$ emissions were decreased at a certain excess air ratio condition. Higher thermal efficiency and further reduction of exhaust emissions can be achieved by the increase of compression ratio and the retard of spark timing.

In the study, pollution levels of indoor polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in public facilities (vapor phase or particulate phase) were evaluated, and a health risk assessment (HRA) was carried out based on exposure scenarios. Public facilities in Korea covered by the law, including underground subway stations, funeral halls, child care facilities, internet cafes (PC-rooms), and exhibition facilities (6 locations for each type of facility, for a total of 48 locations), were investigated for indoor assessment. For the HRA, individual excess cancer risk (ECR) was estimated by applying main toxic equivalency factor (TEF) values suggested in previous studies. Among the eight public facilities, internet cafes showed the highest average $PM_{2.5}$ concentration at $110.0{\mu}g/m^3$ (range: $83.5-138.5{\mu}g/m^3$). When assuming a risk of facility exposure time based upon the results of the surveys for each public facility, the excess cancer risk using the benzo(a)pyrene indicator assessment method was estimated to be $10^{-7}-10^{-6}$ levels for each facility. Based on the risk associated with various TEF values, the excess cancer risk based upon the seven types cancer EPA (1993) and Malcolm & Dobson's (1994) assessment method was estimated to be $10^{-7}-10^{-5}$ for each facility. The excess cancer risk estimated from the TEF EPA (2010) assessment was the highest: $10^{-7}-10^{-4}$ for each facility. This is due to the 10-fold difference between the TEF of dibenzo(a,e)fluoranthene in 2010 and in 1994. The internet cafes where smoking was the clear pollutant showed the highest risk level of $10^{-4}$, which exceeded the World Health Organization's recommended risk of $1{\times}10^{-6}$. All facilities, with the exception of internet cafes, showed a $10^{-6}$ risk level. However, when the TEFs values of the US EPA (2010) were applied, the risk of most facilities in this study exceeded $1{\times}10^{-6}$.

In this study, effects of refrigerant and oil charges on the performance of a refrigeration system simulating an automobile air conditioner have been experimentally investigated using R134a and PAG oil. Measurements were taken in a breadboard type refrigeration test unit with a compressor used for a commercial automobile air-conditioner under a set of condition imposed upon normally to automobile air conditioners. Both the COP and capacity decreased rapidly as the oil charge increased because of the decrease in vapor pressure of the circulating refrigerant/oil mixture. The excess oil left in the evaporator also caused heat transfer degradation resulting in a decrease in capacity and in turn COP. It was found that there is an optimum refrigerant charge at which the COP becomes the maximum. Below this optimum charge, both the capacity and COP increased as the refrigerant charge increased and above the optimum charge, both of them remained almost constant. Hence, the COP seems to be the most important factor in determining the optimum refrigerant charge. When the system was undercharged, the refrigerant at the condenser exit lost subcooling and showed a sign of poor miscibility.
