  • It is shown that the linear stability coincides with the thermodynamic stability in the case of stress tensor evolution for simple dense fluids even if the constitutive (evolution) equation for the stress tensor is nolinear. The domain of coincidence can be defined in the space of parameters appearing in the constitutive equation and we find the domain is confined in an elliptical cone in a three-dimensional parameter space. The corresponding state theory in rheology of simple dense fluids is also further examined. The validity of the idea is strengthened by the examination.

  • This paper reviews and compares three different methods for modeling incompressible and immiscible ternary fluid flows: the immersed boundary, level set, and phase-field methods. The immersed boundary method represents the moving interface by tracking the Lagrangian particles. In the level set method, an interface is defined implicitly by using the signed distance function, and its evolution is governed by a transport equation. In the phase-field method, the advective Cahn-Hilliard equation is used as the evolution equation, and its order parameter also implicitly defines an interface. Each method has its merits and demerits. We perform the several simulations under different conditions to examine the merits and demerits of each method. Based on the results, we determine the most suitable method depending on the specific modeling needs of different situations.

  • The nickel-based alloy Nimonic 80A possesses strength, and corrosion, creep and oxidation resistance at high temperature. These products are used for aerospace, marine engineering and power generation, etc. The control of forging parameters such as strain, strain rate, temperature and holding time is important because the microstructure change in hot working affects the mechanical properties. It is necessary to understand the microstructure variation evolution. The microstructure change evolution occurs by recovery, recrystallization and grain growth phenomena. The dynamic recrystallization evolution has been studied in the temperature range $950-1250^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range $0.05-5s^{-1}$ using hot compression tests. The metadynamic recrystallization and grain growth evolution has been studied in the temperature range $950-1250^{\circ}C$ and strain rate range 0.05, $5s^{-1}$, holding time range 5, 10, 100, 600 sec using hot compression tests. Modeling equations are developed to represent the flow curve, recrystallized grain size, recrystallized fraction and grain growth phenomena by various tests. Parameters of modeling equation are expressed as a function of the Zener-Hollomon parameter. The modeling equation for grain growth is expressed as a function of initial grain size and holding time.

  • A globality of the Hopf bifurcation in a free boundary problem for a parabolic partial differential equation is investigated in this paper. We shall examine the global behavior of the Hopf critical eigenvalues and and apply the center-index theory to show the globality.

  • A numerical investigation is made of transient evolutionary prcocess of electroosmotic flow in a two-dimensional microchannel connected to a reservoir. The channel height is very small so that two electric double layers forming on the charged surfaces are overlapped. Transient transports of ions in the electrolyte solution are computed by integrating the Nernst-Planck equation together with the Poisson equation for electric potential. The numerical results illustrate that there are two distinct transient phases. The physical mechanisms and relevant time scales for the transient evolution are described.

  • Numerical solutions for the viscous Cahn-Hilliard equation are considered using the Crank-Nicolson type finite difference method which conserves the mass. The corresponding stability and error analysis of the scheme are shown. The decay speeds of the solution in $H^1-norm$ are shown. We also compare the evolution of the viscous Cahn-Hilliard equation with that of the Cahn-Hilliard equation numerically and computationally, which has been given as an open question in Novick-Cohen[13].

  • Analytical solutions for the viscous Cahn-Hilliard equation are considered. Existence and uniqueness of the solution are shown. The exponential decay of the solution in H$^2$-norm, which is an improvement of the result in Elliott and Zheng[5]. We also compare the early stages of evolution of the viscous Cahn-Hilliard equation with that of the Cahn-Hilliard equation, which has been given as an open question in Novick-Cohen[8].

  • By using multiple-scale expansion techniques, the Mach reflection of sinusoidally- modulated nonlinear Stokes waves by a stationary thin wedge has been studied within the framework of potential theory. It is shown that the evolution of diffracted wave amplitude can be described by the Zakharov equation to the loading order and that It reduces to the cubic Schrodinger equation with an additional linear term in the case of stable modulations. Computations are made for the cubic Schrodinger equation for different values of nonlinear and dispersion parameters. Numerical results reflect the experimental findings in terms of the amplitude and width of generated stem waves. Based on the computations it is concluded that the nonlinearity dominates the wave field, while the dispersion does not significantly affect the wave evolution.
