Effects of Evening Primrose Oil on Plasma Cholesterol and Fatty Acid Compositions of Erythrocyte Membrane and Aorta in Rats (달맞이꽃 종자유의 섭취가 흰쥐의 혈장 콜레스테롤과 적혈구막 및 대동맥의 지방산조성에 미치는 영향)

  • Weanling male Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into 4 groups according to the level of plasma cholesterol and then fed diets containing 15%(w/w) corn oil, lard or evening primrose oil (EPO) with 0.5% (w/w) of cholesterol. Corn oil without cholesterol was used as a dietary lipid source of control diet. After 4 weeks of feeding, the fatty acid compositions of the red blood cell membrane and aorta phospholipids were analyzed together with the plasma cholesterol level. The rats fed with EPO characterized by its content of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) showed lower cholesterol concentration in plasma than the other groups . In the corn oil groups, plasma cholesterol level was not affected by the addition of dietary cholesterol. The concentrations of dihomogamma-linolenic acid and arachidonic acid, metabolites of GLA, in the tissue were increased in the EPO group compared with the other groups.

Study on the Oxidative Stability of Korean Evening Primrose Oil (한국산 달맞이꽃 종자유의 산화안정성에 관한 연구)

  • In the present study, the oxidative stability of Korean evening primrose oil (EPO) stored in various conditions, i.e., dark, cool, fluorescent light and daylight irradiation were investigated. Furthermore difference between the compositional content of gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) of EPO and that of alpha-linolenic acid of soybean oil (SOY) undergoing various modes of oxidation was observed. The results of the present study were as follows: More rapid autoxidative reations of EPO than that of SOY in vairous conditions increased in order of daylight, fluorescent light, cool and dark. Espectially, autoxidative rates of EPO increased rapidly on exposure to daylight and fluorescent light. This probably was due to chlorophyll functioned as a photosensitizer resulting in rapid oxidation of the EPO during irrdadiation of light. However, there was no difference between compositional content of GLA in EPO and alpha-linolenic acid in SOY undergoing various modes of oxidation. Therefore, theripid oxidative rate of EPO could be due to the catalytic effect of the chlorophyll on the photoxidation and the free radical reaction of PUFA.

Synthesis and Characterization of Structured Lipids from Evening Primrose Seeds Oil and Rice Bran Oil (달맞이꽃 종자유와 미강유로부터 효소적 합성한 재구성 지질의 이화학적 특성 분석)

  • Structured lipids (SLs) were synthesized by enzymatic interesterification with evening primrose oil (EPO) and rice bran oil (RBO) in a batch-type reactor. The interesterification was performed using a water shaker for 24 hr at $55^{\circ}C$. Mixing speed was set at 200 rpm and Lipozyme RM IM (immobilized lipase from Rhizomucor miehei, 10% by weight of total substrates) was used as a biocatalyst. Rice bran oil and evening primrose oil were interesterified with various molar ratios (RBO : EPO, 1:3, 1:4, and 1:5 mol/mol). Reversed-phase high performance liquid chromatography connected with evaporative light-scattering detector was performed to separate the triacylglycerol (TAG) species of SLs. In the fatty acid analysis, $\gamma$-linolenic acid (7.9 mol%), linoleic acid (67.3 mol%) and oleic acid (13.2 mol%) were the most abundant fatty acids in the SLs. During 24 hr reaction, most of the reaction occurred within 3 hr. TAG compositions, tocopherols and phytosterols were also analyzed. In the TAG species analysis, LLL (ECN=42, L=linoleic acid) dramatically decreased when the reaction time increased.

The Effect of Evening Primrose Oil on Chemical and Blood Cholesterol Lowering Properties of Cheddar Cheese

  • The present study was carried out to investigate the changes in chemical and sensory properties, and cholesterol lowering effect of evening primrose oil (EPO) addition in cholesterol-reduced Cheddar cheese. The cholesterol removal rate reached 92.07% by ${\beta}$-cyclodextrin in the cheese before EPO addition. The thiobarbituric acid (TBA) value of cholesterol-reduced and EPO-added cheese increased with both ripening time and amount of EPO addition. Addition of 5% EPO resulted in a significant difference in TBA value after 4-week ripening, compared with no addition of EPO. The production of short-chain free fatty acids (FFAs) increased with ripening period in all treatments. From 4 week of ripening, the amounts of short-chain FFA in 3 and 5% EPO-added groups were significantly higher than those in other groups. Among sensory characteristics, rancidity was mostly affected by EPO addition, however, the rancidity value of 1% EPO-added was not significantly different from that of EPO-free and cholesterol-reduced cheese. Also, Cheddar cheese flavor was not profoundly affected by 1% EPO addition in all ripening periods. Total blood cholesterol dramatically decreased from 184.0 to 137.1 mg/dL with 5% EPO-added and cholesterol-reduced cheese following 8 weeks of feeding. The present results indicated that 5% EPO addition resulted in a profound lowering effect on blood total cholesterol with some adverse effects on chemical and sensory properties.

  • The effects of different concentrations of tocopherols on the oxidation stability of evening primrose oil (EPO) in the dark $(35{\pm}2^{\circ}C)$ were evaluated by some physicochemical characteristics such as peroxide, conjugated diene value and fatty acid composition. The results of the present study were as follows; Alpha-tocopherol at all concentrations (0.02%, 0.05%, 0.10%) showed a prooxidant effect during autoxidation of EPO. This prooxidant activity of alpha-tocopherol increased as its concentration increased rapidly. Delta-tocopherol showed antioxidant activity as its concentration increases at an early stage of storage. But the activity was fairly poor antioxidant activity and was not greater than antioxidant activity of BHT. However, the antioxidant effect of delta-tocopherol and BHT showed no apparent differences as compared with result of none.

  • Ceramides are commonly studied and developed in the cosmetics industry as ingredients that help a moisturized skin and strengthen a skin barrier. In this study, we determined how much great effects the moisturing cream containing a ceramide, obtained from evening primrose oil instead of using a common synthetic ceramide, made on the changes in moisturizing and transdermal water loss of skin. The result showed that the cream with a ceramide showed much better results than the cream without a ceramide at the skin moisture resistance and transdermal water loss of skin.

  • This study was designed to observe the effects of the fish oil and some seed oils on the improvement of the fatty acid compositions of liver and brain tissue in rats. In order to induce the hypertriglyceridemia in the rats of the Sprague-Dawley, 12% coconut oil and 3% each of olive oil, lard, fish oil, perilla oil, corn oil, red pepper seed oil and evening primrose oil were administered to the rats for 4 weeks. In the fatty acid composition of liver lipid, n-3 PUFA contents were most in the fish oil and perilla oil groups of phospholipid fraction, and n-6 PUFA contents were most in the corn oil, red pepper seed oil and evening primrose oil groups of triglyceride fractions. Fatty acid composition of liver lipid fractions were influenced from the fatty acid composition of the test lipids. In the fatty acid composition of brain phospholipid, n-3 PUFA contents (8.8~17.2%) were most in the fish oil group, and n-6 PUFA (34.6~38.2%), though it contains high percentage, showed little difference between groups.

Effect of Dietary Evening Primrose Oil on γ-Fatty Acid Enrichment of Broiler Meat (닭고기의 감마지방산 강화에 관한 달맞이꽃종자유의 급여효과)

  • This study examined the effects of different levels of evening primrose oil (EPO) on the accumulation of ${\gamma}$-fatty acids in broiler meat. Six hundred one-day-old male chicks (Ross strain) from commercial broilers were divided randomly into 6 groups${\times}$4 repeat pens. The broilers were fed experimental diets containing 4.0% tallow (control), 0.5% EPO, 0.7% mixed oil (EPO 70:soy bean oil 30), 1.5% EPO, 3.0% EPO or 4.0% EPO for two weeks of broiler finisher. There was a significant difference in body weight gain between the control and treatment groups except for the 0.5% EPO group (p<0.05). There was a significant difference in the percentage of thigh and breast weight against the carcass weight between control and treatment groups except for the 0.5% EPO group in the thigh and 0.5% EPO and 4.0% EPO groups in the breast weight (p<0.05). The saturated fatty acid levels of the skin and breast muscle lipid of the broilers fed diets containing EPO were significantly lower than that of the control group (p<0.05), while the level of unsaturated fatty acid was significantly higher than that of the control group (p<0.05). The ${\gamma}$-fatty acid (GLA, gamma.linolenic acid, 18:3n-6) level was particularly higher in the chicken meat lipids from the broilers fed EPO than in the control group (p<0.05). This shows that feeding EPO to chicks can produce novel functional broiler meat that is enriched in gamma-linolenic acid.

Effects of Dietary γ-Fatty Acids on the Fatty Acid Composition of Pork and Plasma Lipids in Swine (감마지방산의 급여가 돼지의 혈액지질 및 고기부위별 지방산조성에 미치는 영향)

  • We report that the gamma linolenic acid content of pork is higher in finishing pigs fed diets containing hemp seed oil, evening primrose oil or borage oil as the sources of gamma linolenic acid. Thirty-six three crossing swines ($Landrace{\times}Yorkshire{\times}Duroc$), 80 kg in body weight, were randomly separated into four treatment groups with three pens per treatment and three animals per pen. The finishing swines were fed the experimental diets for 35 days until they reached the market weight of 110 kg. The animals were assigned to the four experimental diets: control diet containing 5.00% tallow, T1 containing 5.00% hemp seed oil (hemp seed oil 40:soybean oil 60), T2 containing 5.00% evening primrose oil (primrose oil 40:soybean oil 60) and T3 containing 5.00% borage oil (borage oil 40:soybean oil 60). The plasma triacylglycerol and total cholesterol content of the swine in the gamma fatty acids-fed groups were significantly (p<0.05) lower than those in the control group. No gamma linolenic acid was detected in the plasma of the control group, while tile level of gamma linolenic acid treatment groups was significantly (p<0.05) higher than the control in the order of T3, T2 and T1. Moreover, the level of gamma linolenic acid increased with increasing number of feeding days. There was a significant difference between the treatment groups (p<0.05). There was a difference in the amount of saturated fatty acid and polyunsaturated fatty acid accumulated in the pork according to the treatment groups or the parts of the pork meat. The level of n-3 fatty acid of pork was highest in T1, which had been fed the hemp seed oil, followed in order by T3 and T2 (p<0.05). The content of gamma linolenic acid in pork was highest in T3, which had been fed the borage oil, followed in order by T2 and T1 (p<0.05). In particular, the level of gamma linolenic acid in pork increased in the order of the back fat, pork belly, ham and loin.

A Study of Separation of γ-linolenic acid with Supercritical Carbon Dioxide (초임계 이산화탄소를 이용한 감마 리놀렌산의 분리에 대한 연구)

  • In different approaches were extracted from evening primrose seed by supercritical fluids carbon dioxide and for comparison with hexane as solvent. The extracts have been analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively to evaluate yield and selectivity of ${\gamma}$-linolenic acid. The yields extracts with supercritical fluids carbon dioxide were higher than those with hexane. When this process produces commercially, will get a many economic profit.
