  • The aim of this study was to evaluate the readability and suitability of patients' education materials on DM. A total of 34 materials on DM from public health centers, general hospitals, and internet web sites were evaluated for readability by 'graded system of vocabulary', and suitability by 'The Korean version of SAM(Suitability Assessment of Materials)'. On the average, 28.3% of 1st grade reading level words, 27.1% of 5th grade level and over were included in educational materials. For suitability, 6(17.6%) were judged superior, 20(58.8%) adequate, 8(23.6%) inadequate. The reading level of the materials was higher than the recommended reading level(6th grade reading level). For suitability, most of materials were inadequate in some of items such as 'summary or review included', 'context given', 'interaction used'. It is proposed that in the development of patients' educational materials, health literacy of target population should be considered.

  • This study was carried out to evaluate off-shore water quality and to draw marine pollution map to Southern sea in Korea by bioassay using gametes and early development system of Asterias amurensis. From the bioassay, it was determined that the water qualites of Southern sea maintained the grade II, because development of A. amurensis were moderately inhibited. However, Sunchon, Kwangyang, and Jinhae Bay belonged to grade III, because development of A. amurensis were strongly inhibited. This could be due to the inflows of several river systems and poor water circulation. The water quality at Yosu island was the grade I, because A. amurensis were not inhibited in its early development.

  • This study investigates the feasibility of incorporating student evaluations of peer review interactions into the course grade for an EFL writing course. The use of such evaluations offers a way to grade the process of writing more directly than using writing portfolios alone. Moreover, evaluating peer review interactions highlights the social aspect of writing, which is valuable in the current post-process climate in writing instruction. The 18 members of a semester-long EFL writing course at a Korean university were trained in peer response for one half of a semester; then performed evaluations of peer review interactions during the second half of the semester as part of their writing course. Student evaluations were examined to reveal whether any bias occurred due to relative age, gender, major, or question type. The results revealed no such biases. Therefore, it is suggested that students are capable of providing fair evaluations of peers, which means the evaluations can be factored into the course grade in order to evaluate the social aspect of the writing process.

  • We report perfusion weighted imaging (PWI) findings of nonenhanced anaplastic astrocytoma in a 30-year-old woman. Brain magnetic resonance imaging showed a nonenhanced brain tumor with mild peritumoral edema on the right medial frontal lobe and right genu of corpus callosum, suggesting a low-grade glioma. However, PWI showed increased relative cerebral blood volume, relative cerebral blood flow, and permeability of nonenhanced brain tumor compared with contralateral normal brain parenchyma, suggesting a high-grade glioma. After surgery, final histopathological analysis revealed World Health Organization grade III anaplastic astrocytoma. This case demonstrates the importance of PWI for preoperative evaluation of nonenhanced brain tumors.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study were to evaluate the results of arthroscopic PCL reconstruction and posterolateral structure reconstruction. Materials and Methods: We performed 10 cases of arthrocopic PCL and posterolateral structure reconstruction using allo-achilles tendon. The average follow-up period was 25 months. We performed KT-2000 testing and posterior drawer test for posterior instability and tibial external rotation test for posterolateral rotatory instability, and measure Tegner and Lysholm score preoperatively and compared these with the results of a final evaluation in each cases. Results: The Preoperative average KT-2000 tests was 7.1 mm, posterior drawer test was Grade III and tibial external rotation test was positive at both 30 and 90 degrees of knee flexion in all cases. Preoperative average Lysholm score was 65.9 and Tegner score was 3.1. At the final evaluation, an average KT-2000 test was 2.2 mm, posteior drawer test, Grade 0 was 2 cases, Grade 1.4 cases, Grade II, 3 cases, Grade III, 1 cases. The tibial external rotation test at both 30 and 90 degrees of knee flexion was positive in 1 cases and positive at only 90 degrees in 2 cases. Lysholm score was 87.6 and Tegner score was 5.7. The objective and subjective score of final evaluation is increased in compare with preoperative one. Conclusion: Arthrocopic PCL and posterolateral structure reconstruction using allo-achilles tendon is one of the good surgical treatment method in patients having posterior and posterolateral rotatory instability.

  • In this paper, availabilities of student-evaluations of team activities in the computer science basic classes were analysed. For the purpose, correlation analysis was conducted to investigate the relationships among peer-evaluation, self-evaluation, and academic achievement, and it was found that there was a statistically significant positive correlation among them. Moreover, the gap between peer-evaluation scores and self-evaluation scores was analyzed. When a one-sample t-test was performed, it was found that the gap was very significant. However, the size of the gap was not different between the two classes. That is, regardless of grade level, the students' self-evaluation scores tended to be on average higher than the evaluation scores received from peers. Finally, when analyzing the relationship between the gap in peer-evaluation and self-evaluation scores and academic achievement, there was no significant correlation between the gap in scores and academic achievement. In other words, there was no difference in the tendency of evaluation for students with high or low academic achievement. The results of the analysis shows the availability of student-evaluations of team activities in the evaluation of team-based instruction. The high correlation between self-evaluation and peer-evaluation indicates the objectivity of student-evaluation. Although it is clear that the self-evaluation score is higher on average than the score received from peers, it is more useful in terms of objectivity because it does not vary according to grade, subject, or academic achievement.
