  • The present study numerically investigate detailed flame structure of the Syngas diffusion flames. In order to realistically represent the turbulence-chemistry interaction and the spatial inhomogeneity of scalar dissipation rate, the Eulerian Particle Flamelet Model(EPFM) with multiple flamelets has been applied to simulate the combustion processes and NOx formation in the syngas turbulent nonpremixed flames. And level-set approach is also utilized to account for the partially premixing effect at fuel and oxidizer injector in KEPRI nonpremixed combustor. Based on numerical results, the detailed discussion has been made for the precise structure and NOx formation characteristics of the turbulent syngas nonpremixed flames.

  • We present an innovative method of multi-physics application involving energetic materials. Energetic materials are related to reacting flows in extreme environments such as fires and explosions. They typically involve high pressure, hish temperature, strong non-linear shock waves, and high strain rate deformation of metals. We use an Eulerian methodology to address these problems. Our approach is naturally free from large deformation of materials that makes it suitable for high strain-rate multi-material interaction problems. Furthermore we eliminate the possible interface smearing by using the level sets. We have devised a new level set based tracking framework that can elegantly handle large gradients typically found in reacting gases and metals. We show several work-in-progress applications of our algorithm including the Taylor impact test, explosive venting and additional confined explosion problems of modem interest.

  • Recently the wind energy has been alternatively used as a renewable energy resource instead of the mostly used fossil fuel due to its lack and environmental issues. This work is to propose a structural design and analysis procedure for development of the low noise 100W class small wind turbine system which will be applicable to relatively low speed region like Korea and for the domestic use. Structural analysis including load cases, stress, deformation, buckling, vibration and fatigue life was performed using the Finite Element Method, the load spectrum analysis and the Miner rule. In order to evaluate the designed structure, the structural test was carried out and its test results were compared with the estimated results. In addition, the blade should be safe from the impact damage due to FOD(Foreign Object Damage) including the bird strike. In order to analize the bird strike penomena on the blade, MSC. Dytran was used, and the applied method Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian was evalud by comparison with the previous study results.

  • The primary aim of the present study is to propose new design formulae that can be used to evaluate the structural performance of breakwaters installed on container carriers under green water impact loads. A series of numerical analyses for green water impact loads inducing breakwater collapse have been carried out. The well-known fluid-structure interaction analysis technique has been adopted realistically to consider the phenomenon of green water impact loads. The structural behavior of these breakwaters under green water impact loads has also been carried out simultaneously throughout the transient analysis. A verification study of the numerical results was performed using the actual collapse incidents of breakwaters on container carriers. It would be expected that the proposed design formulae, based on the obtained insights, could be used as practical guidelines for the design of breakwaters on container carriers.

  • In the present paper, the sloshing resistance performance of an LNG carrier insulation system is evaluated by fluid-structure interaction (FSI) analysis. For this analysis, the arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) method is adopted to accurately calculate the structural behavior induced by internal LNG motion of a KC-1 type LNG carrier cargo tank. In addition, the global-local analysis method is introduced to reduce computational time and cost. The global model is built from shell elements to reduce the sloshing analysis time. The proposed novel analysis techniques can potentially be used to evaluate the structural integrity of LNG carrier insulation systems.

  • Thermo-mechanical simulation of the Friction Stir Spot Welding (FSSW) processes was performed for the AA5083-H18 sheets, utilizing commercial Finite Element Method (FEM) and Finite Volume Method (FVM) which are based on Lagrangian and Eulerian formulations, respectively. The Lagrangian explicit dynamic FEM code, PAM-CRASH, and the Eulerian Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) FVM code, STAR-CD, were utilized to understand the effect of pin geometry on weld strength and material flow under the unsteady state condition. Using FVM code, material flow pattern near the tool boundary was analyzed to explain the weld strength difference between the weld by cylindrical pin and the weld by triangular pin, while the frictional energy concept using the FEM code had limitation to explain the weld strength difference.

  • Multicasting is an efficient means of one to many (or many to many) communications. Due to the frequent and unpredictable topology changes, multicast still remains as challenge and no one-size-fits-all protocol could serve all kinds of needs in ad hoc network. Protocols and approaches currently proposed on this issue could be classified mainly into four categories, tree-based, meshed-based, statelessness and hybrid. In this article, we borrow the concept of Eulerian ring in graph theory and propose a novel ring-based multicast framework--Hierarchical Eulerian Ring-Oriented Multicast Architecture (HEROMA) over wireless mobile Ad hoc network. It is familiar with hybrid protocol based on mesh and tree who concentrates on efficiency and robustness simultaneously. Architecture and recovery algorithm of HEROMA are investigated in details. Simulation result is also presented, which show different level of improvements on end-to-end delay in scenario of small scale.

  • In the Lagrangian vortex particle method based on the vorticity-velocity formulation for solving the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations, a numerical scheme for calculating pressure fields is presented. Implementation of the numerical method is directly connected with the well-established surface panel methods, just by dealing with the dynamic coupling among vorticity field. Assuming the vorticity and the velocity fields are to be calculated in time domain analysis, the pressure calculation for a complete set of solution at present time step is performed in a similar way to the one used in the Eulerian description. For a validation of the present method, we illustrate the early development of the viscous flow about an impulsive started circular cylinder for Reynolds number 550. The comparative study with the Eulerian finite Volume method provides an extensive understanding and application of the mesh-free Lagrangian vortex methods for numerical simulation of viscous flows around arbitrary bodies of general shape.

  • The objective of this study is find out the stressed condition, slipped direction and slipped dimension when some elements of cable-membrane structures are slipped from it's initially designed coordinates by external loads as wind or non uniform load and so on. In order to search the slipped behaviors of cable-membrane structures, a ALE finite element formulation is introduced. In these procedures, a stiffness matrix related with ALE concept is formulated and a FE analysis program for cable-membrane structures with slipped elements is developed.

  • A vorticity-velocity integro-differential formulation of incompressible Wavier-Stokes equations is described, focusing on a scheme for calculating pressure fields in application of the Lagrangian vortex method in connection with panel methods. It deals with the dynamic coupling among velocity, vorticity and pressure, and the Helmholtz decomposition of the velocity field, through a comparative study with the Eulerian finite volume method, we provide an extensive understanding of the Lagrangian vortex methods for numerical simulations of viscous flows around arbitrary bodies.
