  • The performances of lifting surfaces are particularly critical in specific flight conditions like takeoff and landing. Different systems can be used to increase the lift and drag coefficients in such conditions like slat, flap or ailerons. Nevertheless they increase the losses and make difficult the mechanical design of wing structures. Morphing surfaces are a compromise between a right increase in lift and a reduction of parts movements involved in the actuation. Furthermore these systems are suitable for more than one flight condition with low inertia problems. So, flap and slats can be easily substituted by the corresponding morphing shapes. This paper deals with a genetic optimization of an airfoil with morphing flap with an already optimized nose. Indeed, two different codes are used to solve the equations, a finite volume code suitable for structured grids named ZEN and the EulerBoundary Layer Drela's code MSES. First a number of different preliminary design tests were done considering a specific set of design variables in order to restrict the design region. Then a RANS optimization with a single design point related to the take-off flight condition has been carried out in order to refine the previous design. Results are shown using the characteristic curves of the best and of the baseline reported to outline the computed performances enhancements. They reveal how the contemporary use of a morphing acting on the nose of the main component and the trailing edge of the flap drive towards a total not negligible increment in lift.

  • A transfer matrix method has been developed to determine the more accurate natural frequencies for the bending vibration of Bernoulli-Euler beam with linearly reduced width and a concentrated tip mass. The proposed method can be computed an infinite number of the natural frequencies using a single element. Using the differential equation, shear force, and bending moment in which can be deduced by the diverse variational principles, a transfer matrix is formulated. The roots of the differential equation are computed by the Frobenius method. The effect of the concentrated mass for the natural frequencies of width-tapered beams is examined through a parametric study, and to show the accuracy of the proposed method, the computed results compared with those obtained from commercial finite element analysis program(ANSYS).

  • Sandwich structures are well known for their use in aircraft, naval and automobile industries due to their high strength resistance with light weight and high energy absorption capability. Sandwich beams with soft core are very common and simple structures that are employed in day to day general use appliances. Modeling and analysis of sandwich structures is not straight forward due to the interactions between core and face sheets. In this paper, formulation of Super Convergent finite elements for analysis of the sandwich beams with soft core based on Euler Bernoulli beam theory are presented. Two elements, Eul4d with 4 degrees of freedom assuming rigid core in transverse direction and Eul10d with 10 degrees of freedom assuming the flexible core were developed are presented. The formulation considers the top, bottom face sheets and core as separate entities and are coupled by beam kinematics. The performance of these elements are validated by results available in the published literature. Number of studies are performed using the formulated elements in static, free vibration and wave propagation analysis involving various boundary and loading conditions. The paper highlights the advantages of the elements developed over the traditional elements for modeling of sandwich beams and, in particular wave propagation analysis.

  • In this study, a transfer matrix method in which can produce an infinite number of accurate natural frequencies using a single element for the bending vibration of rotating Bernoulli-Euler beam with linearly reduced width, is developed. The roots of the differential equation in the proposed method are calculated using the Frobenius method in the power series solution. To demonstrate the accuracy of the method, the calculated natural frequencies are compared with the results given by using the commercial finite element analysis program(ANSYS), and the comparison results between these two methods show the excellent agreement. Based on the comparison results, a parametric study is performed to investigate the effect of the centrifugal forces on the non-dimensional natural frequencies for rotating beam with the variable width.

  • This article is concerned with the free vibration problem for chiral double-walled carbon nanotube (DWCNTs) modelled using the non-local elasticity theory and Euler Bernoulli beam model. According to the governing equations of non-local Euler Bernoulli beam theory and the boundary conditions, the analytical solution is derived and two branches of transverse wave propagating are obtained. The numerical results obtained provide better representations of the vibration behaviour of double-walled carbon nanotube, where the aspect ratio of the (DWCNTs), the vibrational mode number, the small-scale coefficient and chirality of double-walled carbon nanotube on the frequency ratio (${\chi}^N$) of the (DWCNTs) are significant. In this work, the numerical results obtained can be used to predict and prevent the phenomenon of resonance for the forced vibration analyses of double -walled carbon nanotubes.

  • The methodology known as "shape sensing" allows the reconstruction of the displacement field of a structure starting from strain measurements, with considerable implications for structural monitoring, as well as for the control and implementation of smart structures. An approach to shape sensing is based on the inverse Finite Element Method (iFEM) that uses a variational principle enforcing a least-squares compatibility between measured and analytical strain measures. The structural response is reconstructed without the knowledge of the mechanical properties and load conditions but based only on the relationship between displacements and strains. In order to efficiently apply iFEM to the most common structural typologies of civil engineering, its formulation according to the kinematical assumptions of the Bernoulli-Euler theory is presented. Two beam inverse finite elements are formulated for different loading conditions. Depending on the type of element, the relationship between the minimum number of required measurement stations and the interpolation order is defined. Several examples representing common applications of civil engineering and involving beams and frames are presented. To simulate the experimental strain data at the station points and to verify the accuracy of the displacements obtained with the iFEM shape sensing procedure, a direct FEM analysis of the considered structures is performed using the LUSAS software.

  • Ultra-high-frequency radio-frequency identification (UHF RFID) is widely applied in different industries. The Frame Slotted ALOHA in EPC C1G2 suffers severe collisions that limit the efficiency of tag recognition. An efficient full-duplex anti-collision scheme is proposed to reduce the rate of collision by coordinating the transmitting process of CDMA UWB uplink and UHF downlink. The relevant mathematical models are built to analyze the performance of the proposed scheme. Through simulation, some important findings are gained. The maximum number of identified tags in one slot is g/e (g is the number of PN codes and e is Euler's constant) when the number of tags is equal to mg (m is the number of slots). Unlike the Frame Slotted ALOHA, even if the frame size is small and the number of tags is large, there aren't too many collisions if the number of PN codes is large enough. Our approach with 7-bit Gold codes, 15-bit Gold codes, or 31-bit Gold codes operates 1.4 times, 1.7 times, or 3 times faster than the CDMA Slotted ALOHA, respectively, and 14.5 times, 16.2 times, or 18.5 times faster than the EPC C1 G2 system, respectively. More than 2,000 tags can be processed within 300 ms in our approach.

  • This paper investigates the number of scatterings a photon undergoes in random walks before escaping from a medium. The number of scatterings in random walk processes is commonly approximated as τ + τ2 in the literature, where τ is the optical thickness measured from the center of the medium. However, it is found that this formula is not accurate. In this study, analytical solutions in sphere and slab geometries are derived for both optically thin and optically thick limits, assuming isotropic scattering. These solutions are verified using Monte Carlo simulations. In the optically thick limit, the number of scatterings is found to be 0.5 τ2 and 1.5 τ2 in a sphere and slab, respectively. In the optically thin limit, the number of scatterings is ≈ τ in a sphere and ≈ τ (1 - γ - ln τ + τ) in a slab, where γ ≃ 0.57722 is the Euler-Mascheroni constant. Additionally, we present approximate formulas that reasonably reproduce the simulation results well in intermediate optical depths. These results are applicable to scattering processes that exhibit forward and backward symmetry, including both isotropic and Thomson scattering.
