Effect of Chip Wavelength and Particle Size on the Performance of Two Phosphor Coated W-LEDs

  • Most commercial white LED lamps use blue chip coated with yellow emitting phosphor. The use of blue excitable red and green phosphors is expected to improve the CRI. Several phosphors, such as $SrGa_2S_4:Eu^{2+}$ and $(Sr,Ba)SiO_4:Eu^{2+}$, have been suggested in the past as green components. However, there are issues of the sensitivity and stability of such phosphors. Here, we describe gallium substituted $YAG:Ce^{3+}$ phosphor, as a green emitter. YAG structures are already accepted by the industry, for their stability and efficiency. LEDs with improved CRI could be fabricated by choosing $Y_3Al_4GaO_{12}:Ce^{3+}$ (green and yellow), and $SrS:Eu^{2+}$ (red) phosphors, along with blue chip. Also, the effect of a slight change in chip wavelength is studied, for two phosphor-coated w-LEDs. The reduction in particle size of the coated phosphors also gives improved w-LED characteristics.

  • 본 연구에서는 자외선 영역에서 발광하는 우수한 특성의 적색 형광체를 얻기 위하여 고상 반응법으로 air 분위기에서 $1200^{\circ}C$에서 6시간 동안 열처리하여 $(Y,\;Zn)_2O_3$:$Eu^{3+}$를 Zn 이온의 농도 변화에 따라 실험하였다. $(Y,\;Zn)_2O_3$:$Eu^{3+}$를 XRD에 의해 비교 분석한 결과 주요 peak들이 JCPDS card(No. 41-1105)와 거의 일치하는 것을 확인하였다. 그러나 Zn 이온치 농도가 5 mol% 이상일 때 XRD에서 ZnO의 peak이 관찰되는 것을 확인 하였다. 이로 인하여 Zn 이온의 농도가 5 mol% 이하일 때 불순물 상 없이 $Y_2O_3$ 구조에 잘 고용되는 것을 확인하였다. $(Y,\;Zn)_2O_3$:$Eu^{3+}$의 발광 peak은 여기 흡수 영역인 ${\lambda}ex=254\;nm$를 기준으로 612 nm 영역에서 $Eu^{3+}$ 이온의 $^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_2$에 전형적인 에너지 천이에 의해 가장 강한 발광 peak을 나타내는 것을 확인하였으나 Zn 이온의 농도가 10 mo1% 이상일 때 갑자기 발광 peak이 현저히 감소하는 것을 확인하였고 최대의 발광 peak을 가질 때 형광체의 조성은 $(Y_{0.95},\;Zn_{0.05})_2O_3$:$Eu^{3+}_{0.075}$이였고 입자 size는 $0.4{\sim}3{\mu}m$로 확인되었다.

  • An almost pure phase of $Ba_3Si_6O_{12}N_2$ doped with $Eu^{2+}$ was successfully synthesized through the ammonia nitridation of an oxide precursor prepared through an aqueous-solution method, using propylene- glycol-modified silane. The emission peak intensity of the obtained $Ba_3Si_6O_{12}N_2:Eu^{2+}$ was -2.2 times higher than that of the sample prepared through a solid-state reaction method.

Photoluminescence properties of $Gd_{1-x}Ln_xCa_3(GaO)_3(BO_3)_4$ (Ln=Eu, Tb, Tm) under UV excitation

  • A borate compound was adopted as new host material for $Eu^{3+}$, $Tb^{3+}$ and $Tm^{3+}$ activators. The phosphor samples, $Gd_{1-x}Eu_xCa_3(GaO)_3(BO_3)_4$, $Gd_{1-x}Tb_xCa_3(GaO)_3(BO3)_4$ and $Gd_{1-x}Tm_xCa_3(GaO)_3(BO_3)_4$ have been synthesized by conventional solid-state reaction. The crystalline phase for the resulting powders was identified using an X-ray diffraction $system^1$. Their photoluminescence properties under the excitation of UV ray were investigated. The Eu, Tb or Tm-doped $GdCa_3(GaO)_3(BO_3)_4$ emits efficient red, green or blue light, respectively. It was observed that the optimum concentration of Eu or Tb activator for the borate host was much higher than other $Eu^{3+}$ or $Tb^{3+}-doped$ phosphors.

BaZrO3:Eu3+ 적색 형광체의 발광과 농도 소광 특성 (Luminescence and Concentration Quenching Properties of BaZrO3:Eu3+ Red-Emitting Phosphors)

  • Eu3+-doped BaZrO3 (BaZrO3:Eu3+) phosphor powders were prepared using a solid-state reaction by changing the molar concentration of Eu3+ within the range of 0.5 to 30 mol%. Irrespective of the molar concentration of Eu3+ ions, the crystal structures of all the phosphors were cubic. The excitation spectra of BaZrO3:Eu3+ phosphors consisted of an intense broad band centered at 277 nm in the range of 230~320 nm. The emission spectra were composed of a dominant orange band at 595 nm arising from the 5D07F1 magnetic dipole transition of Eu3+ and two weak emission bands centered at 574 and 615 nm, respectively. As the concentration of Eu3+ increased from 0.5 to 10 mol%, the intensities of all the emission bands gradually increased, approached maxima at 10 mol% of Eu3+ ions, and then showed a decreasing tendency with further increase in the Eu3+ ions due to the concentration quenching. The critical distance between neighboring Eu3+ ions for concentration quenching was calculated to be 11.21 Å, indicating that dipole-dipole interaction was the main mechanism of concentration quenching of BaZrO3:Eu3+ phosphors. The results suggest that the orange emission intensity can be modulated by doping the appropriate concentration of Eu3+ ions.

에틸렌 글리콜을 이용하여 용매열 합성으로 Eu3+가 도핑된 Y2O3 나노 입자의 제조 및 특성 (Preparation and Properties of Eu3+ Doped Y2O3 Nanoparticles with a Solvothermal Synthesis Using the Ethylene Glycol)

  • 에틸렌글리콜을 용매로 하여 용매열 합성으로 20$0^{\circ}C$에서 3-5시간 반응시킨 후 1000-140$0^{\circ}C$에서 2-4시간동안 대기 중에서 열처리 과정으로 Eu가 도핑된 $Y_2$ $O_3$ 나노 입자는 제조되었다. 100$0^{\circ}C$에서 열처리한 결정의 X-선 회절패턴은 보고되어진 데이터(JCPDS 카드파일 41-1105, a=10.6041 $\AA$)와 거의 일치하는 격자상수 a=10.5856 $\AA$으로 순수한 큐빅 $Y_2$ $O_3$ 상을 나타내었다. 제조된 적색 형광체의 평균입자의 크기는 대략 100 nm로 구형의 형태를 가진다 열처리 온도가 증가함에 따라 형광체 입자의 크기가 감소하였고, 열처리 온도가 증가함에 따라 형광체의 발광 세기가 증가하였다. PL 스펙트럼 분석을 통해 Eu의 농도가 3 ㏖% 도핑된 $Y_2$ $O_3$은 250 nm 파장에서 여기 스펙트럼을 나타내었고 611 nm 파장에서 주발광 스펙트럼을 나타내었다.

  • A different route to the synthesis of $Eu^{3+}$ - activated matrices such as $YAlO_{3}$ and $GdAlO_{3}$ and luminiscent properties of these compounds, were studied. The new route (Combustion method) consist of the redox reactions between the respective metal nitrates and urea in a preheated furnace at ${500^{\circ}C}$. The Phosphor thus obtained were then heated at ${1000^{\circ}C}$ for 2-3 hours to get better luminiscent properties. The incorporation of $Eu^{3+}$ activator in these phosphors were checked by luminiscence investigations. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) studies were carried out to understand surface morphological features and the particle size. X-ray energy dispersive analysis (EDAX) was also performed for the qualitative analysis of the phosphors.

RF 열플라즈마를 이용한 Y2O3:Eu3+ 적색 나노 형광체 분말 합성 (Synthesis and characterization of Y2O3 : Eu3+ red nano phosphor powders using RF thermal plasma)

  • $Y_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$는 우수한 적색 발광 특성을 가지고 있는 형광체로 최근 고화질 디스플레이에 대한 수요가 증가함에 따라 관련 연구가 활발히 진행되고 있다. 본 연구에서는 RF 열플라즈마 합성법과 고상법을 이용하여 $Y_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ 적색 형광체를 합성하였으며, 합성 방법에 따른 $Y_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ 적색 형광체의 결정 구조, 미세 구조, 발광 특성의 차이를 XRD, TEM, PL 분석을 통해 비교하였다. 고상법으로 합성된 $Y_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ 적색 형광체의 입자는 약 $10{\sim}20{\mu}m$ 크기를 가지는 반면, RF 열플라즈마 합성법을 통해 합성된 적색 형광체는 반응부는 약 100 nm, 필터부는 약 30 nm의 크기를 갖는 나노 형광체로 확인되었다. 합성된 모든 분말들은 PL 측정결과 611 nm($^5D_0{\rightarrow}^7F_2$)에서 발광하는 것을 확인하였으며, 결정 크기와 입도가 증가할수록 PL intensity가 증가하였다. 또한, 추가 열처리 공정이 필요 없는 one-step 공정의 RF 열플라즈마 공정을 통해 합성된 $Y_2O_3:Eu^{3+}$ 적색 나노 형광체는 고상법으로 합성된 적색 형광체와 비슷한 발광 특성을 보이는 것을 확인할 수 있었다.

  • The new green and red phosphors for PDP application activated by T $b^{3+}$ and E $u^{3+}$ were synthesized, and their photoluminance properties were investigated. It was found that the brightness of $Al_3$Gd $B_4$ $O_{12}$ :T $b^{3+}$ green phosphor under 147nm VUV irradiation was higher than that of commercial Z $n_2$ $SiO_4$:M $n^{2+}$ phosphor. But the emitting intensity of A1$_3$Gd $B_4$ $O^{12}$ :E $u^{3+}$ red phosphor was inferior to the commercial (Y,Gd)B $O_3$:E $u^{3+}$. $Al_3$Gd $B_4$ $O_{12}$ Phosphor had a strong excitation band at 160nm associated with the host absorption, and also the photoluminance excitation intensity of $Al_3$Gd $B_4$ $O_{12}$ :T $b^{3+}$ was higher than that of Z $n_2$ $SiO_4$:M $n^{2+}$, but the intensity of $Al_3$Gd $B_4$ $O_{12}$ :E $u^{3+}$ phosphor was smaller than (Y,Gd)B $O_3$:E $u^{3+}$ phosphor In the VUV range. C $e^{3+}$ co-doping in A1$_3$Gd $B_4$ $O^{12}$ :E $u^{3+}$ and substitution of $Al^{3+}$ by G $a^{3+}$ A1$_3$Gd $B_4$ $O^{12}$ :E $u^{3+}$ phosphor were tried, but they did not improved the optical property .d the optical property .ty .

고상법으로 합성한 Sr4-(x+y+z)Al14O25 : Eux, Dyy, Agz계 축광성 형광체 장잔광의 연구 (Research on Afterglow Brightness of Sr4-(x+y+z)Al14O25 : Eux, Dyy, Agz by Solid State Synthesis)

  • Long-lasting brightness $Sr_{4}Al_{14}O_{25}$ : $Eu^{2+}$, $Dy^{3+}$, $Ag^{+}$ phosphor was synthesized by modified solid state reaction and its photoluminescence was investigated. $Sr(NO_3)_{2}$ and $Al(NO_3)_3{\cdot}9H_{2}O$ as starting materials, and $B_{2}O_{3}$ as a flux were mixed with $Eu_{2}O_{3}$ as an activator, $Dy_{2}O_{3}$ as a coactivator, and $AgNO_{3}$ as a charge compensator. The crystalline of target powder showed a single-phase $Sr_{4}Al_{14}O_{25}$ by the XRD characterization and the average particle size was about 20-30 ${\mu}m$ from the FE-SEM observation. $Ag^{+}$ ion doping effects (0-0.06 mol) on $Sr_{4}Al_{14}O_{25}:Eu^{2+},\;Dy^{3+},\;Ag^{+}$ phosphor were measured by photoluminescence spectrometer and luminescence meter. The of photoluminescence intensity of the $Sr_{3.64}Al_{14}O_{25}:Eu_{0.11},\;Dy_{0.22},\;Ag_{0.03}$ phosphor was higher than other compositions and afterglow brightness was 0.186 $cd/m^{2}$.
