  • Bifid mandibular condyle (BMC) is an uncommon morphological variant of the mandibular condyle. Although authors have proposed various etiologies for BMC, no consensus has emerged. In addition, varying findings have been reported regarding the epidemiological parameters of BMC (e.g., prevalence, gender ratio, and age), possibly due to its low incidence. BMC is occasionally associated with symptoms of the temporomandibular joint, such as ankylosis, pain, and trismus; however, it is difficult to detect this condition on conventional radiographs. This study reports a case of BMC with radiographic findings, and reviews the literature on the epidemiology of BMC.

  • An ulcer is defined as loss of epithelium. Although many oral ulcers have similar clinical appearances, their etiologies encompass many disorders, including trauma, infection, immunologic disease, and malignant oral cancer. Oral squamous cell carcinoma(SCC) occupying about 90% of oral cancer, usually manifests as unhealed ulcer over 2 weeks. Oral SCC can metastasize to the cervical neck lymph node, and therefore the surgical therapeutic modality for oral SCC could encompass the neck node dissection as well as wide excision for primary lesions, which should leave the post-operative complication of functional damage like dysphagia and facial deformity. Therefore, it is important to discriminate oral SCC from other ulcerative conditions to make a prompt management. The knowledge for the pathogenesis of the ulcerative lesions could help the clinicians to understand the differences of clinical features and to practice an appropriate therapeutics.

  • Autism and autistic spectrum disorder are chronic neuro-developmental disorders characterized by social and language impairments and stereotyped, repetitive patterns of behavior. The etiology of autism remains unknown; however, a strong genetic component has been detected and environmental factors may also be involved in their etiologies. In the current study, we reviewed evidence for the presence of prenatal and perinatal factors, gastrointestinal factors, food allergies, metabolic and heavy metal factors, and other nutritional factors that may represent risk factors for the development of autism and autistic spectrum disorder.

  • Objectives & Methods : This study was to study etiology and pathologic mechanism and to study acupuncture and moxibustion treatment for GU-CHANG. I've got compared and analyzed 42 kinds of book since Nei Jing(內經). Results and Conclusion : 1. The etiologies are heat of heart and spleen, insufficiency of middle -warm energy, deficiency of yin lead to hyperactivity of fire. 2. The meridians of acupuncture points which were used much for GU-CHANG were Conception Vessel Meridian, Stomach Meridian and Bladder Meridian. 3. The frequency of using acupunture points in this treatment were Hapkok(LI4)-17th, Sungjang(CV24)-14th, Nogung(P8)-12th, Kumjin Okaeg(NH70)-11th.

  • Root canal perforations are defined as the communication between the pulp cavity, the periodontal tissue and alveolar bone. The occurrence of perforations during endodontic treatment is reported to range from 2.3%~12%, which is not a complication rarely happens. Perforations have iatrogenic or pathological etiologies that involve caries or resorption. It leads to inflammation and the destruction of periodontal fibers and alveolar bone, followed by periodontal defects. Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) is currently the most indicated material for repair of root perforation, because of its favorable biocompatibility and sealing ability. Using magnification with dental operating microscope enhance the accessibility and visibility to manage the root perforation. It is important to diagnose and repair perforations immediately if possible.

  • Two different unusual cases of acute sciatic neuropathy are described. They appeared to have been caused by complications from a procedure performed on a patient in the lithotomy position, and an uncertain etiology associated with either a previous femur fracture or a recent blunt trauma to the buttock. Comprehensive histories of weakness, with radiographic or electrophysiological studies, or even exploratory surgery are important in order to understand the etiologies of the sciatic neuropathies.

  • Anemia can be defined as a reduction in blood hemoglobin concentration or red cell mass relative to age matched normal values. Clinical presentation may range from obviously pale and lethargy to an incidental finding during screening of an otherwise well appearing child. The differential diagnosis of anemia in each instance is broad with numerous possible etiologies. A careful history and physical examination as well as complete blood count, peripheral blood smear and additional laboratory tests are necessary in defining underlying cause of the anemia and guide in further treatment plans. In addition, Iron deficiency anemia and anemia of inflammation are common causes of mild to moderate anemia in children, but most pediatricians have some confusions to differentiate these two entities.

  • Flatfoot is defined as loss of medial arch with hindfoot valgus, but normal condition is obscure due to wide individual variance. Loss or decreasing of medial longitudinal arch with radiographic image is clinically diagnosed as flatfoot. Flatfoot without symptoms is not an indication for treatment. The etiologies of flatfoot are congenital cause, hypermobility, tarsal coalition, neuromuscular disease, post-traumatic deformity, Charcot arthropathy, and posterior tibial tendon dysfuction. The flatfoot is classified as congenital and acquired, flexible, and rigid. The diagnosis is made by physical examination and radiographic findings. In particular, the posterior tibial tendon dysfunction is known as adult acquired flatfoot.
