  • Purpose: It aims to verify the applicability of existing age estimation methods derived from data of foreign population groups to Korean population groups. Moreover it is to suggest a new way applicable to practical age estimation on the basis of newly calculated regression formulae from data of Korean population groups and develop a subsidiarily applicable method to the existing method. Methods: Ratio of pulp cavity to dental crown was calculated by measuring the height and width of dental crowns and pulp cavities at the cervical line from 4,034 first and second upper molars, first and second upper premolars, first and second lower molars and first and second lower premolars on both left and right sides of 400 patients who had been treated in Dental Hospital of Yonsei University College of Dentistry, and regression equations were derived from the values of the ratio. Results: The equation with correlation coefficients the highest among females was as follows: age=$107.96-75.684{\times}{\sharp}17$ TCHI-$53.741{\times}{\sharp}26$ TCVI-$40.664{\times}{\sharp}45$ TCVI-$56.307{\times}{\sharp}46$ TCVI. Randomized anohter Korean female subjects (n=20) are applicated to the new equation. Mean of error of estimate is 10.322 years, standard deviation is 12.852 years. Minimum of error of estimate is 1.018 years, maximum is 21.365 years Conclusions: The error range of age estimation was found to be slightly wider when the existing regression formulae of Drusini were applied to Korean population groups. Also age estimation in females using the ratio of pulp cavity to dental crown measured with the length and width of dental crowns and pulp cavities from maxillomandibular molars was observed to have the highest reliability in the research. However, we consider that advanced equations of regression are needed to apply to both molars and premolars of males and females in the future.

  • Two-Phase sampling, which was first introduced by Neyman (1938), has various applications in different forms. Variance estimation for two-phase sampling has been an important research topic because conventional variance estimators used in most softwares are not working. In this paper, we considered a variance estimation for two-phase sampling in which stratified two-stage cluster sampling designs are used in both phases. By defining a conditionally unbiased estimator of an approximate variance estimator, which is calculable when all elements in the first phase sample are observed, we propose an explicit form of variance estimator of the double expanded estimator for a two-phase sample. A small simulation study shows the proposed variance estimator has a negligible bias with small variance. The suggested variance estimator is also applicable to other linear estimators of the population total or mean if appropriate residuals are defined.

  • The Korean freshwater crayfish, Cambaroides similis, has recently suffered from range reduction and habitat degradation caused by environmental changes and water pollution. For the conservation and restoration of this species, it is necessary to understand the current population structures of Korean C. similis using estimation of their genetic variation. In this study, eight micro satellite loci were developed and characterized from 49 individuals collected from four locations: one population from Mt. Bukhan (BH) and three populations from Mt. Gwanak (GA) in Seoul, Korea. As a result, the number of alleles per locus ranged from 2 to 12. The observed heterozygosities and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.000 to 0.833 and from 0.125 to 0.943, respectively, and the former values were significantly lower than the latter ones expected under the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. No significant linkage disequilibrium was revealed between any of the locus pairs after Bonferroni correction. From the pairwise Fst results over all samples, higher differentiation between GA-BH population pairs (mean 0.1789) was observed than between GA population pairs (mean 0.0454). This was also supported by Mantel's test showing that the genetic distances of these crayfish populations were significantly correlated with geographic distances. This result may show the regional differentiation caused by restricted gene flow between northern (BH) and southern (GA) populations within Seoul. These micro satellite markers have the potential for use in analyses of the genetic diversity and population structure of C. similis species, with implications for its conservation and management plans.

  • Objectives: Very limited previous research has investigated the utility weights of prostate-related diseases in the general population in Korea. The purpose of this study was to calculate the utility of prostate-related health states in the Korean general public using the standard gamble (SG) method. Methods: Seven health states for hypothetical prostate cancers, 1 for benign prostate hyperplasia, and 1 for erectile dysfunction were developed based on patient education material and previous publications. In total, 460 responses from the Korean general population were used to analyze the utility of prostate-related health states. Computer-assisted personal interviews were conducted, and utility values were measured using a visual analogue scale (VAS) and SG. Mean utility values were calculated for each prostate-related health state. Results: The mean utility values of prostate cancer derived from SG ranged from 0.281 (metastatic castration-refractory prostate cancer) to 0.779 (localized prostate cancer requiring prostatectomy). The utility value of benign prostate hyperplasia was 0.871, and that of erectile dysfunction was 0.812. The utility values obtained using the SG method in all conditions were higher than the values obtained by VAS. There were no significant demographic variables affecting utility values in multivariate analysis. Conclusions: Our findings might be useful for economic evaluation and utility calculation of screening and interventions for prostate-related conditions in the general population.

  • This article explores the analysis of longitudinal surveys in which same units are investigated on several occasions. Multivariate exponential ratio type estimator has been proposed for the estimation of the finite population median at the current occasion in two occasion longitudinal surveys. Information on several additional auxiliary variables, which are stable over time and readily available on both the occasions, has been utilized. Properties of the proposed multivariate estimator, including the optimum replacement strategy, are presented. The proposed multivariate estimator is compared with the sample median estimator when there is no matching from a previous occasion and with the exponential ratio type estimator in successive sampling when information is available on only one additional auxiliary variable. The merits of the proposed estimator are justified by empirical interpretations and validated by a simulation study with the help of some natural populations.

  • Though box compression strength (BCS) is commonly used as a performance criterion for shipping containers, estimating BCS remains a challenge. In this study, artificial neural networks (ANN) are implemented as a new tool, with a focus on building up ANN architectures for BCS estimation. An Artificial Neural Network (ANN) model can be constructed by adjusting four modeling factors: hidden neuron numbers, epochs, number of modeling cycles, and number of data points. The four factors interact with each other to influence model accuracy and can be optimized by minimizing model's Mean Squared Error (MSE). Using both data from the literature and "synthetic" data based on the McKee equation, we find that model estimation accuracy remains limited due to the uncertainty in both the input parameters and the ANN process itself. The population size to build an ANN model has been identified based on different data sets. This study provides a methodology guide for future research exploring the applicability of ANN to address problems and answer questions in the corrugated industry.

  • The Oriental White Stork (Ciconia boyciana) is a representative wetland species distributed across East Asia. The species has been declined to face the threat of species extinctions with estimation of at about 3000 individuals. In order to re-introduce the endangered storks in the field, we developed a baseline model using the program VORTEX, performed sensitivity test, and finally suggested an ideal model based on results of the sensitivity test. The baseline model predicted 12.5% extinction probability with mean time to first extinction of 82.0 year. Sensitivity test revealed that two demographic variables (first-year mortality and percent of adult female breeding) had the greatest impacts on population persistence. Thus, corrected model improved the population persistence, where the extinction probability decreased to 1.0% in 100 years by changing values of two variables within a range of applicable to the population. Our models for stork re-introduction suggest this population will be stable by improving first-year mortality and adult female fecundity.

  • Thompson's (1990) adaptive cluster sampling is a promising sampling technique to ensure effective representation of rare or localized population units in the sample. We consider the problem of simultaneous estimation of the numbers of earners through a number of rural unorganized industries of which some are concentrated in specific geographic locations and demonstrate how the performance of a conventional Rao-Hartley-Cochran (RHC, 1962) estimator can be improved upon by using auxiliary information in the form of generalized regression (greg) estimators and then how further improvements are also possible to achieve by adopting adaptive cluster sampling.

  • We investigated two kinds of mean square error (MSE) estimator of homogeneous linear estimator (HLE) for the population total under stratified multi-stage sampling. One is studied when the second stage variance component is estimable and the other is found in cafe it is not estimable. The proposed estimators are necessary forms of non-negative unbiased MSE estimators of HLE.
