  • One of the major issues in inertial and magnetic measurement unit (IMMU)-based 3D orientation estimation is compensation for magnetic disturbances in magnetometer signals, as the magnetic disturbance is a major cause of inaccurate yaw estimation. In the proposed approach, a kinematic constraint is used to provide a measurement equation in addition to the accelerometer and magnetometer signals to mitigate the disturbance effect on the orientation estimation. Although a Kalman filter (KF) is the most popular framework for IMMU-based orientation estimation, a complementary filter (CF) has its own advantages over KF in terms of mathematical simplicity and ease of implementation. Accordingly, this paper introduces a quaternion-based CF with a constraint-combined correction equation. Furthermore, the weight of the constraint relative to the magnetometer signal is adjusted to adapt to magnetic environments to optimally deal with the magnetic disturbance. In the results of our validation experiments, the average and maximum of yaw errors were $1.17^{\circ}$ and $1.65^{\circ}$ from the proposed CF, respectively, and $8.88^{\circ}$ and $14.73^{\circ}$ from the conventional CF, respectively, showing the superiority of the proposed approach.

  • In this article, we propose an estimation procedure for the treatment eect for the right censored data. We apply the least square method for deriving the estimation equation and obtain an explicit formula for an estimation. Then we consider some asymptotic properties with derivation of the asymptotic normality for the estimate. Finally we illustrate our procedure with an example and discuss some interesting aspects for the estimation procedure.

  • The high unemployment rate is one of the major problems in most countries nowadays. Hence, the demand for small area labor statistics has rapidly increased over the past few years. However, since sample surveys for producing official statistics are mainly designed for large areas, it is difficult to produce reliable statistics at the small area level due to small sample sizes. Most of existing studies about the small area estimation are related with the estimation of parameters based on cross-sectional data. By the way, since many official statistics are repeatedly collected at a regular interval of time, for instance, monthly, quarterly, or yearly, we need an alternative model which can handle this type of panel data. In this paper, we derive the generalized kernel estimating equation which can model time-dependency among response variables and handle repeated measurement or panel data. We compare the proposed estimating equation with the generalized linear model and the generalized estimating equation through simulation, and apply it to estimating the unemployment rates of 25 areas in Gyeongsangnam-do and Ulsan for 2005.

  • The main purpose of this study is to understand the effects of hydroclimatic factors on annual actual evapotranspiration and to suggest the multiple linear regression (MLR) equations for the estimation of annual actual evapotranspiration from watershed. To accomplish this study purpose, 5 dam watersheds (Goesan dam, Seomjingang dam, Soyanggang dam, Andong dam, Hapcheon dam) were selected as study watersheds and annual actual evapotranspiration was estimated based on annual water balance analysis from each watershed. The estimated annual actual evapotranspiration from water balance analysis was used to evaluate the MLR equations. Furthermore, the possibility of the estimation of actual evapotranspiration using potential evapotranspiration equations (Penman equation, FAO P-M equation, Makkink equation, Preistley-Taylor equation, Hargreaves equation) was evaluated. It has turned out that it is not appropriate to use potential evapotranspiration for the estimation of actual evapotranspiration because the correlation between actual evapotranspiration and potential evapotranspiration is very low. The comparison of MLR equations with current actual evapotranspiration equations indicates that MLR equations can be used for the estimation of annual actual evapotranspiration. Furthermore, it has turned out that the effects of hydroclimatic factors on annual actual evapotranspiration from dam watersheds are different in each watershed; however, for all watersheds in common precipitation has turned out to be the most important climatic factor affecting on the estimation of annual actual evapotranspiration.

  • In the last few years, there is growing interest in the field of simultaneous equation estimation in finance due to the endogeneity problem caused by measurement errors, simultaneity, or omitted variables. This study aims to discuss the endogeneity problem in corporate financing decisions and investigate the interrelationship of financial decision-making such as investment decision, dividend decision, and external financing decision in Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) using two-stage least squares (2SLS) and generalized method of moment (GMM) estimation. The Bruech-Pagan test shows that the data has no heteroskedasticity issue and 2SLS is a better approach in the context of this study as compared to the GMM approach, and internal instruments are also sufficiently strong and valid. The three financial decision-making attributes are not jointly determined, and the dividend is influenced by one-sided investment. In the emerging stock market context, external financing and investment are not inter-related and did not affect each other. The question of whether the simultaneous equation estimation can be useful in the context of the emerging stock markets and newly-growing firms remains unanswered. The inclusive evidence shows that the theoretical link in the emerging stock market is difficult to prove like in developed stock markets.

  • In this study, a lithium polymer battery (LiPB) is simply expressed by a primary RC equivalent model. The PI state observer is designed in Matlab/Simulink. The non-linear relationship with the OCV-SOC is represented to be linearized with 0.1 pu intervals by using battery parameters obtained by constant-current pulse discharge. A state equation is configured based on battery parameters. The state equation, which applied Peukert's law, can estimate SOC more accurately. SOC estimation capability was analyzed by utilizing reduced Federal Test Procedure (FTP-72) current profile and using a bi-directional DC-DC converter at temperature ($25^{\circ}C$). The PI state observer, which is designed in this study, indicated a SOC estimation error rate of ${\pm}2%$ in any of the initial SOC states. The PI state observer confirms a strong SOC estimation performance despite disturbances, such as modeling errors and noise.

  • In this study, two estimation equations for preparing stream data for distributed storm runoff model were developed by analyzing the nonlinear relation between upstream flow-length and stream width, and between upstream flow-length and stream bed-slope. The equations for stream cell were tested in Chungjudam watershed (6,661 $km^2$) using KIMSTORM. Six storm events occurring between 2003 and 2008 were selected for the model calibration and verification before the test of equations. The average values of the Nash-Sutcliffe model efficiency (ME), the volume conservation index (VCI), the relative error of peak runoff rate (EQp), and the difference of time to peak runoff (DTp) were 0.929, 1.035, 0.037, and -0.406 hr for the calibrated four storm events and 0.956, 0.939, 0.055, and 0.729 hr for the two verified storm events respectively. The estimation equations were tested to the storm events, and compared the flood hydrograph. The test result showed that the estimation equation of stream width reduced the peak runoff and delaying the time to peak runoff, and the estimation equation of stream bed-slope showed the opposite results.

  • Effluent concentration estimation equations for wetland system were developed throught statistical analysis of treatment wetland experimental data. Existin g empirical equations were reviewed for thier accuracy with experimental data, and compared with the estimatin equations. About 70 experimental data sets were used for multiple regression, and variables include influent concentration, hydraulic loading rate, average daily air temperature , and plant coverage. The estimatin equations developed for BOD5 , SS ,T-P, and T-N predicted effluent concentrations moderately well, and coefficient fo determination ($R^2$) for them was 0.74 , 0.60, 0.59 and 0.58 respectively. The equations obtained from same data but excluding plant coverage showed relatively lower $R^2$ than the former case, and it was 0.66, 0.52, 0.41 and 0.57 respectively. The EPA, WPCF , and Kadlec and Knight equations worked poorly and $R^2$ for them was significantly lower than the estimation equation developed in the study. The reason might be that the existing equations were oversimplified that they did ot include important parameters such as air temperature and plant coverage. Therefore, developing reasonable estimation equations from experiment under realistic condition is highly recommended rather than using exiting estimation equations.

  • This study deals an estimation method of thrust measurement uncertainty in solid rocket motors. Guidelines of the force measurement uncertainty estimation have been provided by ISO, domestic and international organizations. However, all of them are described by focusing on the force calibration machines and force transducers with a conceptually-driven way. Thus the guidelines cannot be directly applicable to uncertainty estimation of calibration equation and its linear approximation, which are critical error sources in the thrust measurement. In this paper, the equations taking into account effects of both error sources are derived based on fundamental concepts of measurement uncertainty. These are applied to the real thrust measurement system where a relatively simple estimation method for the thrust measurement uncertainty is proposed.

  • The purpose of this research is the evaluation of the estimation equation of "CEP-FIP Model Code 1990(1991)", recently included in the domestic "Concrete Structure Design Code(2007)" in consideration of the concrete strength. As evaluation tools, crack element model applied a detailed bond-slip model as well as crack width obtained from experimental results by earlier researches. The crack element model is verified through the comparison with experimental results. The important variables in the estimation equation for the crack width in CEP-FIP Model Code 1990 are the tension stiffening effect and mean bond stress proposed in the paper to be improved in consideration of the concrete strength.
