Progressive failure of symmetric laminates under in-plane shear: Il-Negative shear

  • The objective of the present work is to estimate the strength and failure characteristics of symmetric thin square laminates under negative shear load. Two progressive failure analyses, one using the Hashin criterion and the other using a Tensor polynomial criterion, are used in conjunction with the finite element method. First-order shear-deformation theory along with geometric nonlinearity in the von Karman sense has been incorporated in the finite element modeling. Failure loads, associated maximum transverse displacements, locations and modes of failure including the onset of delamination are discussed in detail; these are found to be quite different from those for the positive sheer load reported in Part I of this study (Singh et al. 1998).

  • The IEC 61508 standard was established to specify the functional safety of E/E/PE safety-related systems. Safety life cycle to provide the framework and direction for the application of IEC 61508 is included in this standard. In this paper, we describe overviews, objects, scopes, requirements and activities of each phase in safety life cycle. In addition, we introduce safety integrity level(SIL) which is used for verifying the safety integrity requirements of E/E/PE system and perform a case study to estimate hardware SIL by FMEDA. The SIL is evaluated by two criteria. One of them is the architectural constraints which restrict the maximum SIL by combination of SFF and HFT. The other is the probability of failure which is classified into PFD and PFH based on frequency of demand and calculated by safe or dangerous failure rates.

Downtime cost analysis of offloading operations under irregular waves in Malaysian waters

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the downtime cost of side-by-side offloading operations in Malaysian waters. With the help of a numerical time domain tool, the structure and cable response of moored FPSO vessel was simulated for heading and beam sea-states under irregular waves. The weather downtime was assessed by comparing the response under operational wave condition with the pre defined industrial safe offloading criteria. Additionally, two cases of cable failure were simulated for each sea-state. The novel study on downtime cost was presented for three different location of Malaysia subcontinent for which the location specific wave scatter diagram facilitated to estimate the probability of occurrence of operational wave condition. It was concluded that an unpredictable increment in wave height by 0.5 m can significantly impact the production cost.

  • The Proposed goodness-of-fit test Statistic $\hat{\lambda}_{\alpha}$ derived from the test Statistc in Kim (1992) is itself a smoothing parameter which is selected to minimize an estimated MISE for a truncated series estimator, $d_{\hat{\lambda}{n}}$, of the comparison density function. Therefore, this test statistic leads immediately to a point estimate of the density function in the event that $H_{0}$ is ejected. The limiting distribution of $\hat{\lambda}_{\alpha}$ was obtained under the null hypothesis. It is also shown that this test is consistent against fixed alternatives.

  • The nonlinear dynamic behaviors of guardrail established on the local or high way have been investigated using BARRIER Ⅶ program with respect to four design variables such as section type of beams and posts, impact angle, impact velocity and vehicle weight. Computer simulation programs are sophisticated analytical models for analyzing dynamic vehicle/barrier interactions and provide a relatively inexpensive alternative to full scale crash testing. This study has been focused on the structural adequacy, occupant risk, and vehicle trajectory. For this purpose, the maximum deflection and impact force have been calculated to design the clear zone and to analyze effect of impact attenuation. Also, the acceleration of vehicle and exit angle after collision have been computed to estimate the occupant risk. From this study, it is suggested that we should strengthen the design criteria of guradrail to prevent from disastrous traffic accidents.

  • Recently, the fiber composite materials such as carbon fiber, glass fiber, or aramid, have been frequently used in strengthening reinforced concrete structures. The fiber composite materials typically have orthotropic characteristic and the strength changes significantly acording to the direction of fibers and the method of the lamination. In this study, an algorithm to estimate the stress-strain relationship of the composite materials which have different fiber directions and symmetric or non-symmetric lamination has been developed by using Tsai-Hill and Tsai-Wu failure criteria and progressive laminate failure theory. This algorithm has been implemented to several stress-strain models for the laterally confined concrete compression members such as Mander, Hosotani, and Nakatsuka. The evaluated stress-strain behaviors by the different models are discussed.

  • It is well known that a triangulateration net is superior to a trilateration net or triangulation net in a same configuration. In general, to explain this nature is not easy because the large residuals and reference variance are revealed in the adjustment of a heterogeneous network. In this paper the precision and the reliability of network are discussed, and the considerations of simultaneous adjustment are covered A practical example shows that the concept and criteria of reliability give better estimate than the precision in heterogeneous network.

  • The goal of this project is to estimate the instream flow of the Han River Basin to ensure the adequate supply of suitable quality water for preservation and enhancement of aquatic ecosystems. A applied model is Physical Habitant Simulation System(PHABSIM) of Instream Flow Incremental Methodology(IFIM). The parameters which are needed to simulation by PHABSIM such as flow depth, velocity distribution and channel cover with cross section data are obtained by field survey. The Habitat Suitability Criteria with the application of univariate curve on Zacco platypus as a target species was able to be established by conducting the field investigation. The estimated results of ecological recommended instream flow by this study has important meanings that the future river management have to seriously take into account for the natural environment and functions of river system.

  • In this study, a new method of dental plaque scoring is proposed by adopting new criteria to divide the tooth surface with utilizing the geometrical features of a tooth color image. For the possible clinical usage of our new plaque scoring system, GUI(Graphic User Interface) system is also implemented to estimate the numerical plaque index for a specific tooth by designing the supplementary database management module that handles dental plaque scores.

An Evaluation of Operator's Action Time for Core Cooling Recovery Operation in Nuclear Power Plant (원자력발전소의 노심냉각회복 조치에 대한 운전원 조치시간 평가)

  • Operator's action time is evaluated from MAAP4 analysis used in conventional probabilistic safety assessment(PSA) of a nuclear power plant. MAAP4 code which was developed for severe accident analysis is too conservative to perform a realistic PSA. A best-estimate code such as RELAP5/MOD3, MARS has been used to reduce the conservatism of thermal hydraulic analysis. In this study, operator's action time of core cooling recovery operation is evaluated by using the MARS code, which its Fussell-Vessely(F-V) value was evaluated as highly important in a small break loss of coolant(SBLOCA) event and loss of component cooling water(LOCCW) event in previous PSA. The main conclusions were elicited : (1) MARS analysis provides larger time window for operator's action time than MAAP4 analysis and gives the more realistic time window in PSA (2) Sufficient operator's action time can reduce human error probability and core damage frequency in PSA.
