Error concealment plays an important role in combating transmission errors. Methods of error concealment which produce better quality are generally of higher complexity, thus making some of the more sophisticated algorithms is not suitable for real-time applications. In this paper, we develop temporal and spatial error resilient video encoding and data hiding approach to facilitate the error concealment at the decoder. Block interleaving scheme is introduced to isolate erroneous blocks caused by packet losses for spatial area of error resilience. For temporal area of error resilience, data hiding is applied to the transmission of parity bits to protect motion vectors. To do error concealment quickly, a set of edge features extracted from a block is embedded imperceptibly using data hiding into the host media and transmitted to decoder. If some part of the media data is damaged during transmission, the embedded features are used for concealment of lost data at decoder. This method decreases a complexity of error concealment by reducing the estimation process of lost data from neighbor blocks. The proposed data hiding method of parity bits and block features is not influence much to the complexity of standard encoder. Experimental results show that proposed method conceals properly and effectively burst errors occurred on transmission channel like Internet.

In this paper, channel error characteristics are investigated to alleviate the channel error propagation problem of the digital TV transmission systems. First, error propagation problems, which are mainly caused by the inter-frame dependancy and variable length coding of the MPEG-2 baseline encoder, are intensively analyzed. Next, existing channel resilient schemes are systematically classified into two kinds of schemes; one for the encoder and the other for the decoder. By comparing the performance and implementation cost, the encoder side schemes, such as error localization, layered coding, error resilience bit stream generation techniques, are described in this paper. Also, in an effort to consider the parcticality of the real transmission situation, an efficient error detection scheme for a decoder system is proposed by employing a priori information of the bit stream syntas, checking the encoding conditions at the encoder stage, and exploiting the statistics of the image itself. Finally, subsequent error concealment technique based on the DCT coefficient recovery algorithm is adopted to evaluate the performance of the proposed error resilience technique. The computer simulation results show that the quality of the received image is significantly improved when the bit error rate is as high as 10$^{-5}$ .
The reliability of structures is affected by various impacts that generally have a negative effect, from extreme weather conditions, due to climate change to natural or man-made hazards. In recent years, extreme loading has had an enormous impact on the resilience of structures as one of the most important characteristics of the sound design of structures, besides the structural integrity and robustness. Resilience can be defined as the ability of the structure to absorb or avoid damage without suffering complete failure, and it can be chosen as the main objective of design, maintenance and restoration for structures and infrastructure. The latter needs further clarification (which is done in this paper), to achieve the clarity of goals compared to robustness which is defined in Eurocode EN 1991-1-7 as: "the ability of a structure to withstand events like fire, explosions, impact or the consequences of human error, without being damaged to an extent disproportionate to the original cause". Many existing structures are more vulnerable to the natural or man-made hazards due to their material deterioration, and a further decrease of its loadbearing capacity, modifying the structural performance and functionality and, subsequently, the system resilience. Due to currently frequent extreme events, the design philosophy is shifting from Performance-Based Design to Resilience-Based Design and from unit to system (community) resilience. The paper provides an overview of such design evolution with indicative needs for Resilience-Based Design giving few conducted examples.
Compressed video bitstreams are intended for real-time transmission over communication networks. Because video compression algorithms eliminate the temporal, spatial, and statistical redundancies, the coded video bitstreams are very sensitive to transmission errors. We propose an error resilient video coding technique to limit the effect of error propagation in low bit-rate video coding. The success of error resilient coding techniques relies on how accurately the transmission errors can be detected. To detect the transmission error, we propose a very simple error detection technique based on data hiding Next, we conceal the corrupted MB data using intra MB refresh and motion compensation with the estimated motion vector and compare the simulation results. This method will be useful in video communication in error Prone environment such as WCDMA networks.

H.264 is the prominent video coding standard in various applications such as real-time video streaming and digital multimedia broadcasting, since it provides enhanced compression performance, error resilience tools, and network adaptation. Since compressed video stream is vulnerable to packet loss, error resilience and error concealment(EC) tools are essential for the transmission of video over the Internet. In this paper, we first propose a simple temporal EC method that improves the EC performance for intra-frame in H.264 when the amount of motion is relatively small. Then we propose a new hybrid EC method for intra-frame in H.264, which combines the spatial EC and temporal EC adaptively. The simulations are performed in packet-lossy environments, and the proposed hybrid EC method shows about 0.5-4dB PSNR improvement compared to the conventional spatial EC method that is used for intra-frame in H.264.

Applications using 3D models are increasing recently. Since 3D polygonal models are structured by a triangular mesh, the coding of polygonal models in strips of triangles is an efficient way of representing the data. These strips may be very long, and may take a long time to render or transmit. If the triangle strips are partitioned, it may be possible to perform more efficient data transmission in an error-prone environment and to display the 3D model progressively. In this paper, we devised the Component Based Data Partitioning (CODAP) which is based on Topological Surgery (TS). In order to support the error resilience and the progressively build-up rendering, we partition the connectivity, geometry, and properties of a 3D polygonal model. Each partitioned component is independently encoded and resynchronization between partitioned components is done.
Terrestrial DMB(Digital Multimedia Broad-casting) system that is now under standardization in Korea offers multimedia broadcasting services at mobile environment and is based on Eureka-147 DAB(Digital Audio Broadcasting) for transmission method. Also DMB provides the error protection method of convolution coding. In this paper, we study on the effective error resilience coding of MPEG-4 video stream over DMB system. In our algorithm, the first, we partition the MPEG-4 data using the MPEG-4 data partitioning method, and then controls the convolution coding rate according to the importance of the partitioned data. From our simulation result, we show that our algorithm is proper for terrestrial DMB services.
Objective: The purpose of this paper is to introduce new research trends of human error and accident modeling and to suggest future promising research directions in those areas. Background: Various methods and techniques have been developed to understand the nature of human errors, to classify them, to analyze their causes, to prevent their negative effects, and to use their concepts during design process. However, it has been reported that they are impractical and ineffective for modern complex systems, and new research approaches are needed to secure the safety of those systems. Method: Six different perspectives to study human error and system safety are explained, and then seven recent research trends are introduced in relation to the six perspectives. The implications of the new research trends and viable research directions based on them are discussed from a cognitive systems engineering point of view. Results: Traditional methods for analyzing human errors and identifying causes of accidents have critical limitations in complex systems, and recent research trends seem to provide some insights and clues for overcoming them. Conclusion: Recent research trends of human error and accident modeling emphasize different concepts and viewpoints, which include systems thinking, sociotechnical perspective, ecological modelling, system resilience, and safety culture. Application: The research topics explained in this paper will help researchers to establish future research programmes.
Acceptance of the international standards for video compression, such as H.261, MPEG-1 and MPEG-2, along with the developments in video codec hardware, has created an explosion of application. Among these, the long time quest for long-distance digital video transmission causes an increasing interest in transporting compressed video over networks which are nontraditional for this purpose, including asynchronous transfer mode networks, the Internet, and cellular and wireless channels. Transmission of compression video over packet network is improved for error resilience. And layered video coding techniques improves error resilience. We present a efficient method of scalable video coding for low bandwidth.
