  • This paper presents the application of system identification approaches for the safety assessment of RC-T type bridge based on the result of field test. For these problems, the moment of inertia of cross-sectional area and the natural frequency of bridge were used as structural parameters, the SAP90 program for the structural analysis and the SLP method for the minimum error. As a result, it is found that the proposed algorithm for this study appears applicable to real structures with reasonable complexity. It is shown that the introduction of approximate quadratic equations is more realistic and timesaving than the common methods.

  • The paper presents a signal-based damage detection algorithm of ARX model using dynamic acceleration data. An ARX model correlates acceleration data measured at two locations in a structure by considering those two sets of data as input and output signals. For detecting damage, the error between the measured data and the predicted response from the defined ARX model is computed in time and used for a statistical evaluation. A normal distribution function from the error in time is constructed and its statistical characteristic values are used for the evaluation of damage. By comparing the normal distribution functions before and after damage, three different types of damage indices are proposed. The efficiency and limitation of the proposed algorithm with the statistical evaluation of damage indices have been examined and discussed through laboratory experiments.

  • This paper presents a shape reconstruction method for automatic inspection of the solder joints on PCBs using X-ray. Shape reconstruction from X-ray radiographic image has been very important since X-ray equipment was used for improving the reliability of inspection result. For this purpose there have been lots of previous works using tomography, which reconstructs the correct shape, laminography or tomosynthesis, which are very fast algorithm. Latter two methods show outstanding performance in cross-sectional image reconstruction of lead type component, but they are also known to show some fatal limitations to some kinds of components such as BGA, because of shadow effect. Although conventional tomography does not have any shadow effect, the shape of PCB prohibits it from being applied to shape reconstruction of solder joints on PCB. This paper shows that tomography using Iterative Reconstruction Technique(IRT) can be applied to this difficult problem without any limitations. This makes conventional radiographic instrument used for shape reconstruction without shadow effect. This means that the new method makes cost down and shadow-free shape reconstruction. To verify the effectiveness of IRT, we develop three dimensional model of BGA solder ball, make projection model to obtain X-ray projection data. and perform a simulation study of shape reconstruction. To compare the performance of IRT with that of conventional laminography or tomosynthesis, reconstruction data are reorganized and error analysis between the original model are also performed.

  • Recently, interest in ground subsidence in urban areas has increased after a large sinkhole occurred near the high-story building area in Jamsil, Seoul, Korea, in 2014. If a massive sinkhole occurs in an urban area, it is crucial to assess its risk rapidly. Access to humans for on-site safety diagnosis may be difficult because of the additional risk of collapse in the disaster area. Generally, inspection using drones equipped with high-speed lidar sensors can be utilized. However, if the sinkhole is created vertically to a depth of 100 m, similar to the sinkhole in Guatemala, the drone cannot be applied because of the wireless communication limit and turbulence inside the sinkhole. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) scanning system was fabricated and operated using a towed cable in a massive vertical sinkhole to a depth of 200 m. A high-speed lidar sensor was used to obtain a continuous cross-sectional shape at a certain depth. An inertial-measuring unit was applied to compensate for the error owing to the rotation and pendulum movement of the measuring unit. A reconstruction algorithm, including the compensation scheme, was developed. In a vertical hole with a depth of 180 m in the mining area, the fabricated system was applied to scan 0-165 m depth. The reconstructed shape was depicted in a 3D graph.

  • In this paper, we developed the inspection system of electric vehicle battery plate using image processing. Four cameras are used for acquiring the principal parts of the plate, and several steps of image processing for extracting significant dimensions of the plate such as widths and lengths. As a preceding step, calibration of four cameras is carried for compensating distorted images using dot-arrayed sheet. Coordinate systems for four cameras are defined where one coordinate system is assigned to the reference coordinate system to which the others are relatively described. Line information of the edge in the windowed image is extracted using elaborate edge-detection algorithm, and finally the intersection points between lines are extracted to calculate widths and lengths of the plate from which the error status of the battery plate is decided.

  • The lateral-shearing interferometer specially devised for production line inspection lenses is presented. The interferometer is composed with immersion oil and four prisms whose relative sliding motion provide lateral-shearing and phase-shifting. A special phase-measuring algorithm of a-bucket is adopted to compensate the phase-shifting error caused by the thickness reduction in the immersion oil Three different algorithm for determinating quantitative aberration of aspherical lenses are presented and compared with one another.

  • This study proposes a load identification for the safety monitoring of the steel structure based on measured strain data. Instead of parameterizing the stiffness of structure in the existing system identification researches, the loads on a structure and a matrix (the unit strain matrix) defined by the relationship between strain and load on structure are parameterized in this study. The error function is defined by the difference between measured strain and strain estimated by parameters. In order to minimize this error function, the genetic algorithm which is one of the optimization algorithm is applied and the parameters are found. The loads on the structure can be identified through the founded parameters and measured strain data. When the loads are changed, the unmeasured strains are estimated based on founded parameters and measured strains on changed state of structure. To verify the load identification algorithm in this paper, the static experimental test for 3 dimensional steel frame structure was implemented and the loads were exactly identified through the measured strain data. In case of loading changes, the unmeasured strains which are monitoring targets on the structure were estimated in acceptable error range (0.17~3.13%). It is expected that the identification method in this study is applied to the safety monitoring of steel structures more practically.

  • In this paper, we proposed a thickness measurement method of concrete slab using GPR, and the verification of the suggested algorithm was carried out through real-scale experiment. The thickness measurement algorithm developed in this study is to set the relative dielectric constant based on the unique shape of parabola, and time series data can be converted to thickness information. GPR scanning were conducted in four types of slab structure for noise reduction, including finishing mortar, autoclaved lightweight concrete, and noise damping layer. The thickness obtained by GPR was compared with Boring data, and the average error was 1.95 mm. In order to investigate the effect of finishing materials on the slab, additional three types of finishing materials were placed, and the following average error was 1.70 mm. In addition, sampling interval from device, the effect of radius on the shape of parabola, and Boring error were comprehensively discussed. Based on the experimental verification, GPR scanning and the suggested algorithm have a great potential that they can be applied to the thickness measurement of finishing mortar from concrete slab with high accuracy.

  • New concept of fine dust measurement method is suggested based on ultrasonic scattering. These days, fine dust has been social problem in Korea, and many researches has been conducted including the area structural maintenance. Conventional measurement system such as optical scattering and semiconductor has a limit from environmental factors like relative humidity. However, ultrasound is based on mechanical waves, which perturb mechanical properties of medium such as density and elastic constants. Using the advantage, the algorithm for fine dust measurement is derived and evaluated using 2-D finite difference method. The numerical analysis simulates ultrasonic wave propagation inside multiple scattering medium like fine dust in air. Signal processing scheme is also suggested and the results show that the error of the algorithm is around minimum of 0.7 and maximum of 24.9 in the number density unit. It is shown that cross-section of fine dust is a key parameter to improve the accuracy of algorithm.
