Parallel robots are usually used for performing pick-and-place motion to increase productivity in high-speed environments. The present study proposes a high-speed parallel robot and a control approach to improve the tracking performance for the purpose of handling a solar cell. However, the target processes are not limited to the solar cell-handling field. Therefore, a delta-type parallel manipulator is designed, and a ball joint structure is specifically proposed to increase the allowed angle that would meet the required workspace. A control algorithm considering the synchronization between multiple joints in a closed-chain mechanism is also suggested to improve the tracking performance, where the tracking and synchronization errors are simultaneously considered. In addition, a prototype machine with the proposed ball joint is implemented. A satisfactory tracking performance is achieved by applying the proposed control algorithm, with a cycle time of 0.3 s for a 0.1 kg payload.

The purpose of this study is to challenge a computational regression-type problem, that is handling large-size data, in which conventional metamodeling techniques often fail in a practical sense. To solve such problems, regression-type boosting, one of ensemble model techniques, together with bootstrapping-based re-sampling is a reasonable choice. This study suggests weight updates by the amount of the residual itself and a new error decision criterion which constructs an ensemble model of models selectively chosen by rejection limits. Through these ideas, we propose AdaBoost.RMU.R as a metamodeling technique suitable for handling large-size data. To assess the performance of the proposed method in comparison to some existing methods, we used 6 mathematical problems. For each problem, we computed the average and the standard deviation of residuals between real response values and predicted response values. Results revealed that the average and the standard deviation of AdaBoost.RMU.R were improved than those of other algorithms.
In this paper, we represent a nonlinear identification of electronic brake pedal behavior in the brake-by-wire (BBW) system based on hybrid group method of data handling (GMDH) and genetic algorithm (GA). A GMDH is a kind of multi-layer network with a structure that is determined through training and which can express nonlinear dynamics as a mathematical model. The GA is used in the GMDH, enabling each neuron to search for its optimal set of connections with the preceding layer. The results obtained with this hybrid approach were compared with different nonlinear system identification methods. The experimental results showed that the hybrid approach performs better than the other methods in terms of root mean square error (RMSE) and correlation coefficients. The hybrid GMDH/GA approach was effective for modeling and predicting the brake pedal system under random braking conditions.

Numerous experiments with a scaled pilot facility were carried out to compare the relative bulk transfer performance of three special devices for applications to drilling systems. The pipe diameter for bulk transportation was 3 in., which corresponds to around half of the actual system dimensions. Two different pressures, 3 and 4 bar, were considered to check the relative performance under different pressure conditions at a bulk storage tank. And to make a practical estimation method of the bulk transfer rate at the early design stages of the bulk handling system, a series of experiments were conducted for real scaled bulk handing systems of two drilling vessels. The pressure drops at each pipe element as well as the bulk transfer rates were measured under different operating conditions. Using the measured results, the friction factor for each pipe element was calculated and a procedure for transfer rate estimation was developed. Compared to the measured transfer rate results for other drilling vessels, the estimated transfer rates were within a maximum 15% error bound.
This paper presents a practical method to compute the closest approach distance of two ellipsoids in their inter-center direction. This is the key technique for collision handling in the dynamic simulation of rigid and deformable bodies approximated with ellipsoids. We formulate a set of equations with the inter-center distance and the contact point and normal for the two ellipsoids contacting each other externally. The equations are solved using fixed-point iteration and Aitken's delta-squared process. In addition, we introduce a novel stopping criterion expressed in terms of the error in distance. We demonstrate the efficiency and practicality of our method in various experiments.
worker-centered safety management for hazardous areas in the plant is required. The causes of gas accidents in the past five years are closely related to the behavior of the operator, such as careless handling of the user, careless handling of the suppliers, and intentional, as well as equipment failure and accident of thought. In order to prevent such accidents, real-time monitoring of hazardous areas in the plant is required. However, when installing a camera in a work space for real-time monitoring, problems such as human rights abuse occur. In order to prevent this, an infrared camera with low resolution with low exposure of the operator is used. In real-time monitoring, image analysis is performed using CNN algorithm, not human, to prevent human rights violation.

The Standardized Plant Analysis Risk-Human Reliability Analysis (SPAR-H) method is a widely used method in human reliability analysis (HRA). Performance shaping factors (PSFs) refer to the factors that may influence human performance and are used to adjust nominal human error probabilities (HEPs) in SPAR-H. However, the PSFs are assumed to be independent, which is unrealistic and can lead to unreasonable estimation of HEPs. In this paper, a new method is proposed to handle the dependencies among PSFs in SPAR-H to obtain more reasonable results. Firstly, the dependencies among PSFs are analyzed by using decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) method. Then, PSFs are assigned different weights according to their dependent relationships. Finally, multipliers of PSFs are modified based on the relative weights of PSFs. A case study is illustrated that the proposed method is effective in handling the dependent PSFs in SPAR-H, where the duplicate calculations of the dependent part can be reduced. The proposed method can deal with a more general situation that PSFs are dependent, and can provide more reasonable results.

Recently, according to the rapid development of computer and electronic technology, most crude oil carriers adopt automated cargo handling system. But an excessive automation makes system so complicate that it could increase the Possibility of accidents due to human error. Although a cargo handling process is done by an expert, the potential of accidents by human factor lies through the whole cargo handling procedure and the current automated system lacks of the functionality to prevent a mis-operation and diagnose the abnormal status of the system. Because the oil concerned accident could be almost a disaster, the primary goal of system development should not be a fully automated system but be a perfectly safe system. This paper deals with the analysis and design of an expert system which can provide mariner with the operational guidance and the facility of crisis management by monitoring system's abnormal condition and human's mis-operation.
Many maritime accidents have been caused by human-error including such things as inadequate watch keeping and/or mistakes in ship handling. Also, new navigational equipment has been developed using IT technology to provide various information for safe navigation. Despite these efforts, the reduction of maritime accidents has not occurred to the degree expected because, navigational equipment provides too much information, and this information is not well organized, such that users feel it to be complicated rather than helpful. In this point of view, the method of representation of navigational information is more important than the quantity of that information and research is required on the representation of information to make that information more easily understood and to allow decisions to be made correctly and promptly. In this paper, we adopt Augmented Reality (AR) technologies for the representation of information. AR is a 3D computer graphics technology that blends virtual reality and the real world. Recently, this technology has been widely applied in our daily lives because it can provide information more effectively to users. Therefore, we propose a new concept, a navigational system based on AR technology; we review experimental results from a ship-handling simulator and from an open sea test to verify the efficiency of the proposed system.
A passive microfluidic delivery system using hydrophobic valving and pneumatic control was devised for microfluidic handling on a chip. The microfluidic metering, cutting, transport, and merging of two liquids on the chip were correctly performed. The error range of the accuracy of microfluid metering was below 4% on a 20 nL scale, which showed that microfluid was easily manipulated with the desired volume on a chip. For a study of the feasibility of biochemical reactions on the chip, a single enzymatic reaction, such as ${\beta}-galactosidase$ reaction, was performed. The detection limit of the substrate, i.e. fluorescein $di-{\beta}-galactopyranoside$ (FDG) of the ${\beta}-galactosidase$ (6.7 fM), was about 76 pM. Additionally, multiple biochemical reactions such as in vitro protein synthesis of enhanced green fluorescence protein (EGFP) were successfully demonstrated at the nanoliter scale, which suggests that our microfluidic chip can be applied not only to miniaturization of various biochemical reactions, but also to development of the microfluidic biochemical reaction system requiring a precise nano-scale control.
