  • The present study investigates numerically particle laden flow through compressor cascades and a rocket nozzle. Engines are affected by various particles which are suspending in the atmosphere. Especially in the case of aircraft aviating in volcanic, industrial and desert region including many particles, each components of engine system are damaged severely. That damage modes are erosion of compressor blading and rotor path components, partial or total blockage of cooling passage and engine control system degradation. Numerical prediction and experimental data, erosion rates are predicted for two materials - ceramic, soft metal - on compressor blade surface. Aluminum oxide ($Al_2O_3$) Particles included in solid rocket propelant make ablative the rocket motor nozzle and imped the expansion processes of propulsion. By the definition of particle deposition efficiency, characteristics of particles impaction are considered quantitatively Stoke number is defined over the various particle sizes and particle trajectories are treated by Lagrangian approach. Particle stability is considered by definition of Weber number in rocket nozzle and particle breakup and evaporation is simulated in a rocket nozzle.

  • In this study characteristics of debris flow landslide were investigated on the focus of debris flow disaster occurred by heavy rainfall in 2013 at Goeun-ri around Kaeryoung Mt. in Chuncheon-si. Appropriate method for estimating scale of debris flow was investigated by comparing those values from soil loss by Universal Soil Loss Equation, debris flow yield rate obtained by field survey of investigating debris flow path from initiation and erosion to deposition and other methods. As results of this study, it might be an opportunity of contributing to construct the data base for determining the size of erosion control facilities in future.

  • A rf triode magnetron sputtering system is designed and installed its construction in vacuum chamber. In order to calibrate the rf triode magnetron sputtering for thin films deposition processes, the effects of different glow discharge conditions were investigated in terms of the deposition rate measurements. The basic parameters for calibrating experiment in this sputtering system are rf power input, gas pressure, plasma current, and target-to-substrate distance. Because a knowledge of the deposition rate is necessary to control film thickness and to evaluate optimal conditions which are an important consideration in preparing better thin films, the deposition rates of copper as a testing material under the various sputtering conditions are investigated. Furthermore, a triode sputtering system designed in our team is simulated by the SIMION program. As a result, it is sure that the simulation of electron trajectories in the sputtering system is confined directly above the target surface by the force of $E{\times}B$ field. Finally, some teats with the above 4 different sputtering conditions demonstrate that the deposition rate of rf triode magnetron sputtering is relatively higher than that of the conventional sputtering system. This means that the higher deposition rate is probably caused by a high ion density in the triode and magnetron system. The erosion area of target surface bombarded by Ar ion is sputtered widely on the whole target except on both magnet sides. Therefore, the designed rf triode magnetron sputtering is a powerful deposition system.

  • Upland erosion pollutes surface waters and often causes serious problems when deposition occurs. This study builds a sediment rating curve using the measured sediment yield and the simulated soil erosion by a GIS-embedded empirical model. The coefficient of determination ($R^2$) between the simulated soil erosion and the measurement sediment yields with rainfall amount are 0.427 for Donghyang and 0.667 for Cheonchen, but the values with rainfall intensity are 0.873 and 0.927 respectively. The data are divided into two groups: one for calibration during 2002-2005 (48 months) and the other for estimation during 2006-2008 (36 months). The first data group (2002-2005) was used to derive the SDR with an aid of soil erosion calculated by the USLE and the measured sediment yield. The mean SDR with rainfall amount is 6.273 and 3.353, respectively, while 4.799 and 2.874 for rainfall intensity. But the standard deviation (STD) with rainfall intensity is 0.930 and 0.407, which is much less than that with rainfall amount (3.746 and 2.090) for both sites. The results show the derived SDR provides reasonable accuracy and rainfall intensity gives better performance in calculating soil erosion than rainfall amount.

  • Good quality superconducting $YBa_2Cu_30_{7-{\delta}}$(YBCO) thin films were grown on Hastelloy (Ni-Cr-Mo alloys) with yttria-stabilized zirconia(YSZ) buffer layers by in situ pulsed laser deposition in a multi-target processing chamber. Generally, Hastelloy exhibits excellent resistance to corrosion, fatigue, thermal shock, impact, and erosion. However, it is difficult to make films on flexible metallic substrates due to interdiffusion problems between metallic substrates and superconducting overlayers. To overcome this difficulty, it is necessary to use YSZ buffer layer since it will not only limit the interdiffusion process but also minimize the surface microcrack formation due to smaller mismatch between the film and the substrate. In order to enhance the crystallinity of YBCO films on metallic substrates, YSZ buffer layers were grown at various temperatures different from the deposition temperature of YBCO films. On YSZ buffer layer grown at higher temperature than that for depositing YBCO film, the YBCO thin film was found to be textured with c-axis orientation by x-ray diffraction and had a zero-resistance critical temperature of about 85K.

  • As facilities such as dam reservoir wetlands and agricultural irrigation reservoir wetlands are built, sedimentation occurs over time through erosion, sedimentation transport, and sediment deposition. Sedimentation issues are very important for the maintenance of reservoir wetlands because long-term sedimentation of sediments affects flood and drought control functions. However, research on resignation has been estimated mainly by empirical formulas due to the lack of available data. The purpose of this study was to calculate and compare the sediment deposition rate by developing a multiple regression model along with actual data and empirical formulas. In addition, it was attempted to identify potential causes of collapse by applying it to 64 reservoir wetlands that suffered flood damage due to the long rainy season in 2020 due to reservoir wetland sedimentation and aging. For the target reservoir, 10 locations including the GaGog reservoir located in Miryang city, Gyeongsangnam province in South Korea, where there is actual survey information, were selected. A multiple regression model was developed in consideration of physical and climatic characteristics, and a total of four empirical formulas and sediment deposition rate were calculated. Using this, the error of the sediment deposition rate was compared. As a result of calculating the sediment deposition rate using the multiple regression model, the error was the lowest from 0.21(m3km2/yr) to 2.13(m3km2/yr). Therefore, based on the sediment deposition rate estimated by the multi-regression model, the change in the available capacity of reservoir wetlands was analyzed, and the effective storage capacity was found to have decreased from 0.21(%) to 16.56(%). In addition, the sediment deposition rate of the reservoir where the overflow damage occurred was relatively higher than that of the reservoir where the piping damage occurred. In other words, accumulating sediment deposition rate at the bottom of the reservoir would result in a lack of acceptable effective water capacity and reduced reservoir flood and drought control capabilities, resulting in reservoir collapse damage.

  • A two-dimensional numerical model was applied to investigate the sediment transport and sand bank formation in a macrotidal sea, the Kyunggi and Asan Bays. The tidal residual currents show quite complex pattern including counter-rotating eddies off the northwestern corner of the Dugjeok Island that reflect the promontory effect. Complex residual eddies are also present off the coast of the Taeanbando and in the Asan Bay. Net sediment transport pattern shows that sandy sediments in the Kyunggi and Asan Bays are generally transported landward from the outer sea suggesting sediment trapping inside the bays. This phenomenon may be related to the formation and maintenance of numerous sand banks in this macrotidal sea. Alternate occurrences of deposition and erosion predicted from the numerical model along the coast of the Taeanbando with strong deposition on the southwestern part of the 'Jangansatoe'(JSB), a large sand ridge off the coast of the Taeanbando appear to reflect the loose connection of JSB, The 'Joongangcheontoe', a central sand bank (CSB) with the main axis in the NW-SE direction in the Asan Bay may undergo a modification with strong deposition along the northeastern flank. These results indicate that the sand banks are actively modified and maintained by the strong tidal currents in this shallow macrotidal sea.

  • In this study, the sensitivity analysis of bed changes due to the various sediment transport equations have been conducted for 80 km reach of the Lower Nakdong River using the HEC-6 which is one dimensional numerical model. The bed elevation changes according to the different sediment transport formulas were compared and analyzed quantitatively. As a result of the numerical simulation, the final bed elevation calculated by Engelund and Hansen(1967), Ackers and White(1973), and Yang(1979) formulas was similar to one another in configuration. The bed change simulated by Engelund and Hansen(1967) were greatest among them, for example, 5.5 m deposition and 2.9 m erosion for 100 years. Also, in the case of Toffaleti (1969) equation, the maximum bed deposition of 8.04 m after 100 years was induced at the 73 km location upstream of the Nakdong River Estuary Barrage. Meyer-Peter-M$\ddot{u}$ller(1948) and Wilcock(2001) formulas produced the deposition only at the upstream end and there was little bed change in the downstream area. The unreal bed configuration of continuously up and down pattern was simulated by Laursen(1958) transport equation.

  • The intensive rainfall over 455 mm occurred between on 9 to 14 July 2009 triggered debris flows around the mountain area in Jecheon County. We mapped the debris flow area and estimated the debris flow volume using a high resolution digital elevation model (DEM) generated respectively from terrestrial LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) and topographic maps. For the LiDAR measurement, the terrestrial laser scanning system RIEGL LMS-Z390i which is equipped with GPS system and high-resolution digital camera were used. After the clipping and filtering, the point data generated by LiDAR scanning were overlapped with digital map and produced DEM after debris flow. The comparison between digital map and LiDAR scanning result showed the erosion and deposition volumes of about $17,586m^3$ and $7,520m^3$, respectively. The LiDAR data allowed comprehensive investigation of the morphological features present along the sliding surface and in the deposit areas.

  • This study considered a seagrass habitat in order to analyze the characteristics of a marine environment of seagrass located in the Seomjin river estuary, through an analysis of the distribution of the water depth, field observation, and three-dimensional numerical experiments using an EFDC model. The seagrass habitat was usually distributed at D.L(-) 0.5~0.0 m, and was hardly seen in the intertidal zone higher than that range. The distribution of the water temperature was within the range of $7.0{\sim}23.2^{\circ}C$, and the seagrass was demonstrated to have a strong tolerance to changes in the water temperature. In addition, the salinity distribution was found to be 27.2~31.0 psu, with suspended solids of 32.1 mg/L, which were higher than the previous research results (Huh et al., 1998), implying that there may be a reduction in the amount of deposits caused by the suspended solids. As for the sedimentary facies, they were comprised of 62.7% sand, 19.1% silt, and 18.2% clay, indicating that the arenaceous was superior and the sedimentary facies were similar to that of Dadae Bay. According to a numerical experiment, the maximum tidal current was 75 cm/s, while the tidal residual current was 10 cm/s, confirming that it sufficiently adapted to strong tidal currents. The erosion and deposition are predicted to be less than 1.0 cm/year. Thus, it is judged that the resuspension of sediments due to tidal currents and the changes in sedimentary facies are insignificant.
