The electrical contact characteristics including temperature rise, contact resistance and arc erosion rate of the $Ag-SnO_2$ materials with increased $SnO_2$ content were investigated during the repeated make-and-break operations. The thickness of arcing melting layer reduces by half and the arc erosion rate decreases more than 70% under 10000 times operations at AC 10 A with the $SnO_2$ content increasing from 15 wt.% to 45 wt.%, on one hand, temperature rise and contact resistance increase obviously but could be reduced to the same order of conventional $Ag-SnO_2$ materials by increasing the contact force. The microstructure evolution and the effect of $SnO_2$ on the arc erosion, contact resistance were analyzed.
TiN coated films exhibit excellent mechanical properties such as high wear, erosion and corrosion resistances and a high thermal stability. Therefore, they are widely applied to a coating material in tools, ornaments, parts and semiconductors. However, the fracture of TiN coated films frequently occurs. The distribution of preferred orientations, i.e., texture, of TiN coated films strongly influences the fracture behavior of these films. In the present study. various TiN coating layers having different textures were prepared by the reactive ion physical vapor deposition and the texture dependence of friction coefficient, erosion and corrosion in these coating layers was investigated. The sample depicting the (115) texture parallel to the coating layer normal displayed a flatter surface than that observed from the sample having the (111) texture. The friction coefficient of TiN thin films was hardly dependent on the texture of coated samples. The samples having (115) texture displayed higher wear, erosion and corrosion resistances than the samples having (111) texture.

A comprehensive review on sliding and solid particle erosion wear characteristics of silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics and SiC composites is provided. Sliding or erosion wear behavior of ceramics is dependent on various material characteristics as well as test parameters. Effects of microstructural and mechanical properties of SiC ceramics are particularly focused to understand tribological performance of SiC ceramics. Results obtained between varieties of pairs of SiC ceramics indicate complexity in understanding dominant mechanisms of material removal. Wear mechanisms during sliding are mainly divided in two groups as mechanical and tribochemical. In solid particle erosion conditions, wear mechanisms of SiC ceramics are explained by elastic-plastic deformation controlled micro-fracture on the surface followed by radial-lateral crack propagation beneath the plastic zone.

The alpine agricultural activities are usually performed at higher and steep areas in nature. Thus, significant amounts of soil erosion are occurring compared with those from other areas. Thus, the soil erosion induced environmental impacts in these areas are getting greater. The Doam watershed is located at alpine areas and it has been well known that the agricultural activities in the watershed are causing accelerated soil erosion and water quality degradations. Many modeling approaches were employed to solve soil erosion and water quality issues. In this study, the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) model was utilized to simulate the hydrologic and sediment behaviors in the Doam watershed. In many previous modeling studies, the digital soil map and its corresponding soil properties were used without modification to reflect soil conditioning at many agricultural fields of the Doam watershed. Thus, the soil sample was taken at the agricultural field within the Doam watershed and analyzed for its physical properties. In this study, the digital topsoil properties in the agricultural fields within the Doam watershed were replaced with the soil properties for reconditioned soil analyzed in this study to simulate the impacts of using soil properties for reconditioned soil in hydrologic and sediment modeling at the Doam watershed using the SWAT model. The hydrologic component of the SWAT model was calibrated and validated for measured flow data from 2002 to 2003. The $R^2$ value was 0.79 and the EI value was 0.53 for weekly simulated data. The calibrated model parameters were used for hydrologic component validation and the $R^2$ value was 0.86 and the EI value was 0.74 for weekly data. For sediment comparison, the $R^2$ value was 0.67 and the EI value was 0.59. These statistics improved with the use of soil properties of the reconditioned soil in the field compared with the results obtained without considering soil reconditioning. The simulated sediment amounts with and without considering the soil properties of the reconditioned soil were 284,813 ton and 158,369 ton, respectively. This result indicates that there could be approximately 79% of errors in estimated sediment yield at the Doam watershed, although the model comparison with the measured data gave similar satisfactory statistics with and without considering soil properties from the reconditioned soil.
The solid rocket motor(SRM) consists of a motor case, igniter, propellants, nozzle, insulation, controller, and driving device. The liquid rocket propulsion systems(LRPSs) cools the nozzle by the fuel and oxidizer but SRM does not cool the nozzle. The nozzle of SRM is high temperature condition and high velocity condition so occurs the erosion by combustion gas. This erosion occurs the change of nozzle throat and reduces thrust performance of rocket. The material of Rocket nozzle is minimization of erosion and insulation effect and endure the shear force, high temperature and high pressure. The purpose of this study is to investigate the erosion characteristics of solid rocket nozzles by each combustion time. Through the structure inspection of Graphite and C-C composite, identify the characteristics of the microstructure before and after erosion.

The purpose of this study is to quantitatively estimate the settling and erosional properties for cohesive sediments in Shihwa lake. Settling tests are conducted by multi-depth method using a specially designed 1.8 m tall settling column, and erosion tests are conducted with annular flume under the uniform bed condition. As result of settling tests, it is confirmed that the settling velocity of the cohesive sediments has the range of $0.002 for suspended sediments concentration of 0.1$0.19{\sim}0.55N/m^{2}$ for bed shear stress of $1.14{\sim}1.32g/cm^{3}$, and the erosion rate coefficient decreases with logarithmic function in a range of $18.4{\sim}3.9mg/cm^{2}{\cdot}hr$ with increase of bed shear stress.

Cavitation erosion properties of the Cu-9Al-4.5Ni-4.5Fe alloys (Al-bronze) surface-modified by flame quenching process have been investigated. After flame quenching at above $T_{\beta}$, the surfaces of Al-bronze with $\alpha$ + $\textsc{k}$ structure have been changed into the $\alpha$ + $\beta$' martensite phases by the eutectoid reaction of $\alpha$ + $\textsc{k}$\longrightarrow$\beta$ followed by the martensite transformation of $\beta$\longrightarrow$\beta$'. As a result of cavitation test, the measured incubation time and erosion rate of the $\alpha$ + $\beta$' alloy was 1.2 times higher and 1.5 times lower, respectively, compared to those of the conventional $\alpha$ + $\textsc{k}$ alloys, showing a remarkable increase of cavitation resistance with the formation of $\beta$' martensite. This is attributed to a preferential erosion of the $\textsc{k}$ precipitates that show the lowest resistance among the $\alpha$, $\textsc{k}$, $\beta$' phases under cavitation loading.ases under cavitation loading.
The resistance of soil to the tractive force of flowing water is one of the essential parameters for the stability of the soil when directly exposed to the movement of water such as in rivers and ocean beds. Biopolymers, which are new to sustainable geotechnical engineering practices, are known to enhance the mechanical properties of soil. This study addresses the surface erosion resistance of river-sand treated with several biopolymers that originated from micro-organisms, plants, and dairy products. We used a state-of-the-art erosion function apparatus with P-wave reflection monitoring. Experimental results have shown that biopolymers significantly improve the erosion resistance of soil surfaces. Specifically, the critical shear stress (i.e., the minimum shear stress needed to detach individual soil grains) of biopolymer-treated soils increased by 2 to 500 times. The erodibility coefficient (i.e., the rate of increase in erodibility as the shear stress increases) decreased following biopolymer treatment from 1 × 10-2 to 1 × 10-6 times compared to that of untreated river-sands. The scour prediction calculated using the SRICOS-EFA program has shown that a height of 14 m of an untreated surface is eroded during the ten years flow of the Nakdong River, while biopolymer treatment reduced this height to less than 2.5 m. The result of this study has demonstrated the possibility of cross-linked biopolymers for river-bed stabilization agents.
The purpose of this paper was to investigate the effect of deposition configuration on the mechanical properties of the flame sprayed titania ceramic coating. The sprayed deposition configuration was made in different five types with titania ceramic and Ni-base alloy on the mild steel substrate. The composite coating exhibited superior mechanical properties such as hardness, adhesive strength, thermal shock resistance and corrosion resistance, whereas the mixed coating proved to be more resistant to erosion. Especially graded coating, which consist of Ni-base alloy undercost, intermediate grade coat and titania ceramic overcost, showed excellent mechanical properties.

Four W/Cu system(60wt%W-40wt%Cu, -0.lwt%Ni, -0.5wt%Ni, -0.lwt%C) and four WC/Cu system(60wt%WC-40wt%Cu, -0.lwt%Ni, -0.5wt%Ni, 0.lwt%C) electrical contacts were prepared by a press-sinter-infiltration process to compare with their properties. Hardness and electrical conductivity are proportional to the refractory metal(W or WC) properties and showed the effect of additives. Arc erosion trend of switch test is changed by current level. High currant test at 1kA showed a different crack formation pattern and erosion mode between W/Cu system and WC/Cu system contacts.
