New Evaluation and Test of Sidewall's Rotational Stiffness of Radial Tire

  • In this paper, we have revisited the estimation of the rotational stiffness of sidewall of radial tire and have suggested a new method for evaluation of the rotational stiffness. Since thicknesses, and volume fractions of the constituents of sidewall are varied depending on radial position, the equivalent shear modulus of the sidewall also depends on radial position. For the estimation of rotational stiffness of sidewall's rubber, we have divided its cross-section into sufficient numbers of small parts and have calculated the equivalent shear modulus of each part of sidewall. Using the shear moduli of divided parts, we have obtained the rotational stiffness by employing in-plane shear deformation theory. This method is expected to be a useful tool in tire design since it relates such basic variables to the global stillness of tire. Applying the calculation method to a radial tire of P205/60R15, we have compared its rotational stiffness with experimental one.

  • Flat-plate buildings are commonly modeled as two-dimensional frames to calculate lateral drift, unbalanced moments, and shear at slab-column connections. For gravity loads. the slab-column frames are analyzed using equivalent column approach, while equivalent beam approach is typical for lateral loads. The equivalent beam approach is convenient for computer analysis, but no rational procedure exists for determining the effective width of foor slabs. At present, the determination of the equivalent slab width and its stiffness is a matter of engineering judgement. To account for cracking, overly conservative assumptions are made regarding the stiffness of the slab. A rational approach is therefore needed to realistically estimate the equivalent slab width and its stiffness for unbalanced moment and lateral drift calculations. Based on the test results of 8 interior slab-column connections, an equivalent beam model is proposed in which columns are modeled conventionally as a function of column and slab aspect ratios and the magnitude of the gravity load. the proposed approach is verified with selected experimental results and is founded to be practical and convenient for analyzing flat-plate buildings subjected to gravity and lateral loading.

  • The goal of this paper is to develop a rational static method which consider efficiently the dynamic effect of the gravity load following sudden removal of element. For this goal this paper introduce the equivalent load for element stiffness which is a preceding research result and will develop equivalent static analysis which will be able to predict the maximum behavior considering dynamic effect. Some examples are provided to verify it. Equivalent static analysis is compared with the analysis method which is recommended by the GSA2003 guidelines and the time-history analysis which is the most accurate for dynamic behavior.

사다리꼴 주름판의 진동해석 (Vibration Analysis of Trapezoidally Corrugated Plates)

  • In this paper, the vibration characteristics of the trapezoidally corrugated plate are investigated by the analytical method. The corrugated plate is widely used as the structural elements because of its high stiffness and light weight. Because the corrugated plate is flexible in the corrugation direction and stiff in the transverse direction, it is treated as an equivalent orthotropic plate to analyze the corrugated plate simply. This equivalent plate must include both extensional and flexural effect to obtain the precise solution. The effective extensional and flexural stiffness of the equivalent plate are derived to consider these effects in the analysis. To demonstrate the validity of the proposed approach, the comparison is made with the previously published results and ANSYS solutions. Some numerical results are presented to check the effect of the geometric properties.

  • In this paper, the characteristic dependencies of LRB(lead rubber bearing) were studied by various prototype tests on LRB for buildings. The characteristics of LRB were dependent on displacements, repeated cycles, frequencies, vertical pressures and temperatures. The prototype test showed that the displacement was the most governing factor influencing on characteristics of LRB. The effective stiffness and equivalent damping of LRB were decreased with large displacement, and increased with high frequency. After the repeated cyclic test with 50 cycles, the effective stiffness and equivalent damping of LRB were reduced by approximately 20% compared with those of the 1$^{st}$ cycle. The effective stiffness was decreased with high vertical pressure, while the equivalent damping was increased. In which, the equivalent damping was more dependent on the vertical pressure than the effective stiffness.s.

  • The dynamic characteristic of a wrist power transmission examine closely with mass property, to present the model which induce the vibration is ultimately the purpose. A robot wrist power transmission for analysis model got the mass property through the approach to be the experimental. A bearing equivalent stiffness which supports the axis and a gear contact equivalent stiffness are determined by the simplicity analysis model compared the result of the experiment. We calculate the vibration tendency of the robot wrist power transmission by an analysis tool which is called the RecurDyn. We compared it with a signal analysis experiment's which a robot operation happens which is based on the ambient noise.

  • To make railway carbody light in weight has advantages at some aspects of both manufacturing and maintenance. Recently, railway carbodys of steel structure have been lightened their weight by using aluminum extrusion plate. for the additional lightening of railway carbody, an optimal design which maintains proper strength and minimizes weight must be achieved. Optimization which is used with finite element analysis for aluminum extrusion plate has the disadvantage of consuming much time. In this paper, the method of equivalent material property which is available to FEA code is established using the method of equivalent stiffness. This method for plate is expanded into the method for railway carbody structure with plates and shells. An objective function is established for maximum stiffness of unit aluminum extrusion plate using established method of equivalent material property. We performed an multi-objective optimization using the penalty function method. As a result, recommendable shapes and sizes of unit extrusion plate for under-frame of high speed train is presented.

Soft story retrofit of low-rise braced buildings by equivalent moment-resisting frames

  • Soft-story buildings have bottom stories much less rigid than the top stories and are susceptible to earthquake damage. Therefore, the seismic design specifications need strict design considerations in such cases. In this paper, a four-story building was investigated as a case study and the effects of X-braces elimination in its lower stories studied. In addition, the possibility of replacement of the X-braces in soft-stories with equivalent moment resisting frame inspected in two different phases. In first phase, the stiffness of X-braces and equivalent moment-resisting frames evaluated using classic equations. In final phase, diagonals removed from the lowest story to develop a soft-story and replaced with moment resisting frames. Then, the seismic stiffness variation of moment-resisting frame evaluated using nonlinear static and dynamic analyses. The results show that substitution of braced frames with an equivalent moment-resisting frame of the same stiffness increases story drift and reduces energy absorption capacity. However, it is enough to consider the needs of building codes, even using equivalent moment resisting frame instead of X-Braces, to avoid soft-story stiffness irregularity in seismic design of buildings. Besides, soft-story development in the second story may be more critical under strong ground excitations, because of interaction of adjacent stories.

횡하중을 받는 철근콘크리트 장주설계를 위한 기둥의 등가강성식 (Equivalent Column Stiffness Equations for Design of RC Slender Columns under Later Loads)

  • 기둥의 축력-모멘트-곡률곡선으로 결정된 등가강성을 이용하여 P-${\Delta}$- 해석을 수행하는 방법은 횡화중을 받는 철근콘크리트 장주의 극한지지력을 비교적 정확하게 예측할 수 있으나 실무설계에 이용하기에는 복잡한 방법이다. 보다 효율적인 해석과정을 위하여 시방서상 사용가능한 기둥단면에 대한 축력-모멘트-곡률곡선과 이에 따른 등가강성을 구하고, 이를 간편하게 계산할 수 있는 등가강성식을 제안하였다. 제안된 강성식을 P-${\Delta}$ 해석법과 모멘트확대법에 적용하여 실험치와 비교하여 해석의 정확도를 확인하였다. 횡하중을 받는 철근콘크리트장주의 설계시 제안된 강성식을 입력자료로 이용한다면 좀더 간편하게 P-${\Delta}$ 해석을 수행할 수 있을 것이며, 시방서에서 규정된 모멘트확대법의 기둥강성식 대신 사용한다면 모멘트확대법의 정확도를 향상시킬 수 있을 것이다.

Seismic responses of base-isolated buildings: efficacy of equivalent linear modeling under near-fault earthquakes

  • Design criteria, modeling rules, and analysis principles of seismic isolation systems have already found place in important building codes and standards such as the Uniform Building Code and ASCE/SEI 7-05. Although real behaviors of isolation systems composed of high damping or lead rubber bearings are nonlinear, equivalent linear models can be obtained using effective stiffness and damping which makes use of linear seismic analysis methods for seismic-isolated buildings possible. However, equivalent linear modeling and analysis may lead to errors in seismic response terms of multi-story buildings and thus need to be assessed comprehensively. This study investigates the accuracy of equivalent linear modeling via numerical experiments conducted on generic five-story three dimensional seismic-isolated buildings. A wide range of nonlinear isolation systems with different characteristics and their equivalent linear counterparts are subjected to historical earthquakes and isolation system displacements, top floor accelerations, story drifts, base shears, and torsional base moments are compared. Relations between the accuracy of the estimates of peak structural responses from equivalent linear models and typical characteristics of nonlinear isolation systems including effective period, rigid-body mode period, effective viscous damping ratio, and post-yield to pre-yield stiffness ratio are established. Influence of biaxial interaction and plan eccentricity are also examined.
