Neural Network based Aircraft Engine Health Management using C-MAPSS Data (C-MAPSS 데이터를 이용한 항공기 엔진의 신경 회로망 기반 건전성관리)

  • PHM (Prognostics and Health Management) of aircraft engines is applied to predict the remaining useful life before failure or the lifetime limit. There are two methods to establish a predictive model for this: The physics-based method and the data-driven method. The physics-based method is more accurate and requires less data, but its application is limited because there are few models available. In this study, the data-driven method is applied, in which a multi-layer perceptron based neural network algorithms is applied for the life prediction. The neural network is trained using the data sets virtually made by the C-MAPSS code developed by NASA. After training the model, it is applied to the test data sets, in which the confidence interval of the remaining useful life is predicted and validated by the actual value. The performance of proposed method is compared with previous studies, and the favorable accuracy is found.

  • Virtual router redundancy protocol (VRRP) was designed as a solution to support fast fail-over in case of network failure. There exists virtual router which acts as default gateway in LAN, and the virtual router is dynamically elected between master and backup router. Through this protocol, end-hosts can be provided seamless network service. However, it needs expensive license fees and maintenance costs to adopt current commercial network operating systems. Furthermore, they are commonly enterprise proprietary software and inherently closed source. In order to tackle these problem, Open N2OS which is open source based open network software platform was developed. It has no dependency on hardware equipment, and provides high availability, scalability, various networking functions. In this paper, we handle VRRP operation and mechanism with related command line interface (CLI).

Outcomes of Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation in Children: An 11-Year Single-Center Experience in Korea

  • Background: Extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has become an important treatment modality in pediatric patients with cardiopulmonary failure, but few studies have been conducted in Korea. Methods: We conducted a retrospective review of pediatric patients younger than 18 years who were placed on ECMO between January 2004 and December 2014 at Samsung Medical Center. Results: We identified 116 children on ECMO support. The overall rate of successful weaning was 51.7%, and the survival to discharge rate was 37.1%. There were 39, 61, and 16 patients on ECMO for respiratory, cardiac, and extracorporeal cardiopulmonary resuscitation, respectively. The weaning rate in each group was 48.7%, 55.7%, and 43.8%, respectively. The survival rate was 43.6%, 36.1%, and 25.0%, respectively. Sixteen patients on ECMO had functional single ventricle physiology; in this group, the weaning rate was 43.8% and the survival rate was 31.3%. Ten patients were on ECMO as a bridge to transplantation (8 for heart and 2 for lung). In patients with heart transplantation, the rate of survival to transplantation was 50.0%, and the overall rate of survival to discharge was 37.5%. Conclusion: An increasing trend in pediatric ECMO utilization was observed. The outcomes were favorable considering the early experiences that were included in this study and the limited supply of specialized equipment for pediatric patients.

  • Power grid techniques are distributed over general power systems ranging from power stations to power transmission, power distribution, and users. To monitor and control the elements and performance of a power system in real time in the extensive area of power generation, power transmission, wide-area monitoring (WAM) and control techniques are required (Sattinger et al. 2007). Also, to efficiently operate a power grid, integrated techniques of information and communication technology are required for the application of communication network and relevant equipment, computing, and system control software. WAM should make a precise power grid measurement of more than once per cycle by time synchronization using GPS. By collecting the measurement values of a power grid from substations located at faraway regions through remote communication, the current status of the entire power grid system can be examined. However, for GPS that is used in general national industries, unexpected dangerous situations have occurred due to its deterioration and jamming. Currently, the power grid is based on a synchronization system using GPS. Thus, interruption of the time synchronization system of the power system due to the failure or abnormal condition of GPS would have enormous effects on each field such as economy, security, and the lives of the public due to the destruction of the synchronization system of the national power grid. Developed countries have an emergency substitute system in preparation for this abnormal situation of GPS. Therefore, in Korea, a system that is used to prepare for the interruption of GPS reception should also be established on a long-term basis; but prior to this, it is required that an evaluation technique for the time synchronization performance of a GPS receiver using an atomic clock within the power grid. In this study, a monitoring system of time synchronization based on GPS at a power grid was implemented, and the results were presented.

  • The Main Landing Gear(MLG) of Rotary Wing Aircraft is an essential equipment in Landing System for pilot to perform a flight mission. It supports the fuselage at ground and absorbs the impact from the ground when landing, thereby, these functions sustain operational capability for pilot and crew. However, the A aircraft caused asymmetry and leakage hydraulic when it was stationed on the ground. Therefore, this paper summarizes pilot comments in operation which are classified by cause of occurrence and the troubleshooting process about each comment. It also describes design improvements which was derived from troubleshooting and suggests verification results of flight test.

A Study on Stable Operation of Li-ion Battery Charging/Discharging System (Li-ion 배터리 충/방전 시스템의 안정적 운영에 관한 연구)

  • When the operation of battery is converted at charging and discharging system based on a DC micro grid, the voltage is fluctuated. And excessive voltage fluctuation could cause damage or failure of charging and discharging equipment. Therefore, in this paper, we studied the operating schedule of the charging and discharging system based on the DC micro grid and a design point of the capacitor which was able to reduce the voltage fluctuation. A result of computer simulation showed that when a fluctuation-reducing capacitor which had an initial value of 600V/35mF was applied at the charging and discharging system based on a DC micro grid which was operated with three charging battery sets and five discharging battery sets, voltage fluctuation by charging and discharging operation was reduced by about 63.3%. Furthermore, voltage fluctuation which occurred when initial network voltage was stabilized was reduced by about 73%.

  • Electric cables are one of the most important components in a nuclear power plant since they provide the power needed to operate electrical equipment. Despite their importance, cables typically receive little attention since they are considered passive, long-lived components that have been very reliable over the years when subjected to the environmental conditions for which they were designed. The operating experience reveals that a defect of the insulator or poor construction causes the initial failure of cable. However, the number of cable failures increase with plant aging, and these cable failures are occurring within the plants' 40-year licensed period. These cable failures have resulted in plant transients, shutdown, loss of safety functions or redundancy, entries into limiting conditions for operation, and challenges for plant operators. Therefore, diagnosis of MV cable installed in NPPs has become one of the most urgent issues in recent years. In accordance with PSR, condition maintenance for cables is also continuously required. Recently, HFPD tests have been widely performed to diagnose cable in the transmission and distribution cable system. However, on-line HFPD wasn't used in the NPPs because of the danger of plant shutdown, measurement sensitivity and application problems, etc. In this paper, HFPD measurement with portable device was performed to evaluate the integrity of the 4.16kV & 13.8kV cable lines. The test results show that HFPD is highly attractive to the diagnosis of MV cables in NPP by high detection sensitivity on-site.

Considering the Multi-Purpose Display Designed for Aircraft Lightning Protection (낙뢰보호를 고려한 항공기용 다목적 디스플레이 설계)

  • In this paper, we introduce measures designed content for RTCA DO-160 F, Section 22 tests performed to verify the effects of indirect lightning and testing process of the test was carried out in the multi-purpose display certification process. This is referred to as indirect effects of lightning capability of an aircraft having electrical electronic equipment failure or damage to bring lightning induced voltages. In order to protect the avionics from lightning indirect effects of these aircraft are analyzing the effects of lightning strikes on aircraft and aircraft systems and interior design needs protection against the threat on their part. In this paper, we introduce RTCA DO-160 F, component selection process according to Section 22 category selection method and the selected level for determining the level of such measures for protection against lightning of multipurpose display for this aircraft. It also introduces the actual test process to confirm that the designed effectiveness of the selected part. We expect a good example of the lightning planned for future development of measures designed avionics through each step of the process introduced this.

A Security Protocol for Swarming Technique in Peer-to-Peer Networks (피어 투 피어 네트워크에서 스워밍 기법을 위한 보안 프로토콜)

  • With fast deployment of high-speed networks and various online services, the demand for massive content distribution is also growing fast. An approach that is increasingly visible in communication research community and in industry domain is peer-to-peer (P2P) networks. The P2P swarming technique enables a content distribution system to achieve higher throughput, avoid server or network overload, and be more resilient to failure and traffic fluctuation. Moreover, as a P2P-based architecture pushed the computing and bandwidth cost toward the network edge, it allows scalability to support a large number of subscribers on a global scale, while imposing little demand for equipment on the content providers. However, the P2P swarming burdens message exchange overheads on the system. In this paper, we propose a new protocol which provides confidentiality, authentication, integrity, and access control to P2P swarming. We implemented a prototype of our protocol on Android smart phone platform. We believe our approach can be straightforwardly adapted to existing commercial P2P content distribution systems with modest modifications to current implementations.

Accelerated Life Analysis and Endurance Verification of Electro-Mechanical Actuator (항공기용 전기식 날개 구동장치의 가속 수명 분석 및 시험을 통한 내구성 검증)

  • Electro-Mechanical Actuator installed on the aircraft plays a key role in an aircraft's flight control through flight control computer. Reliable prediction of the actuator is important for the aircraft. To estimate the lifetime of a product, it is necessary to test full target life. However, it is very difficult to perform it due to the long life time of actuator but short period of development time with increasing cost. Therefore, accelerated life test has been used to reduce the test time for various reasons such as reducing product's development cycle and cost. In this paper, to predict the lifetime of the actuator, we analyzed the flight profile of aircraft and adapted the method of accelerated life test in order to accelerate failure modes that might occur under user conditions. We also set up an endurance test equipment for validating the demanded lifetime of an actuator and performed accelerated life test.
