  • Much research efforts have been made on the equal channel angular pressing(ECAP) which produces ultra-fine grains. In this paper the ECAP processes with Zr-702 alloy at elevated temperature and at room temperature are considered. Both two-dimensional and three-dimensional finite element analyses have been employed to investigate the deformation behaviors of specimen during ECAP process.

  • The grain size of aluminum alloy was refined to the submicrometer level by using equal-channel angular pressing(ECAP). The effect of grain size refinement was evaluated by the tensile test, micro-hardness test, microstructure observations, ultrasonic test and acoustic emission test. The strength and the Vickers hardness were increased significantly according to grain size refinement after equal-channel angular pressed. The ultrasonic velocity was faster after equal-channel angular pressed, and the high frequency range appeared. The results of the ultrasonic velocity and the frequency range are expected to be basic data that can prove the grain size refinement

  • There has been a number of investigations in recent years reporting the results obtained on the structure and properties of metals deformed to severe plastic deformation (SPD). Being deformed to SPD, ultra-fine grains (UFG) are usually formed, and UFG structure exhibits fundamental differences in original physical properties. One method often used to obtain SPD is equal channel angular pressing (ECAP). In order for this technique to be exploited, it is important to understand the deformation behavior during the ECAP processing and relationship to the configuration of die. The finite element method (FEM) has been used to investigate this issue. It has been found that the plastic deformation is sensitive to the channel angle and material properties and is not uniform across the width of the specimen and the pressing load is relative to deformation during the ECAP processing.

  • Preform design is an effective means of achieving the homogeneous deformation of workpiece materials and decreased load in metal forming. However, this approach has not been applied to equal channel angula. pressing (ECAP). In this paper, plastic deformation behavior of workpieces having four different preform shapes during ECAP was investigated using finite element analyses. The results indicated that a preform design of the workpiece head has a beneficial effect on homogeneous deformation, reducing the maximum pressing load at the initial stage and eliminating folding defects at strain concentration points.

  • Ultra-fine grained and high hardened Al sheet was obtained by Equal Channel Angular Pressing (ECAP). During this process the microstructure, the hardness and the texture of AA 1050 Al alloy sheet are changed by a severe shear deformation. The plastic strain ratio after the ECAP and subsequent heat-treatment condition was investigated in this study. It was found that the average r-value of the equal channel angular pressed and subsequent heat-treated specimen was 1.7 times higher than that of the initial Al sheet. This could be attributed to the various texture formations through the ECAP and subsequent heat-treatment of AA 1050 Aluminum alloy sheets.

  • In recent years, equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) has been the subject of intensive study due to its capability of producing fully dense samples having a ultrafine grain size. In this paper, the ECAP process was applied to metallic powders in order to achieve both powder consolidation and grain refinement. In the ECAP process for solid and powder metals, knowledge of the internal stress, strain and strain rate distribution is fundamental to the determination of the optimum process conditions for a given material. The properties of the ECAP processed solid and powder materials are strongly dependent on the shear plastic deformation behavior during ECAP, which is controlled mainly by die geometry, material properties, and process conditions. In this study, we investigated the consolidation, plastic deformation and microstructure evolution behaviour of the powder compact during ECAP.

  • In this study, bottom-up type powder processing and top-down type SPD (severe plastic deformation) approaches were combined in order to achieve full density of carbon nanotube (CNT)/metal matrix composites with superior mechanical properties by improved particle bonding and least grain growth, which were considered as a bottle neck of the bottom-up method using the conventional powder metallurgy of compaction and sintering. ECAP (equal channel angular pressing), the most promising method in SPD, was used for the CNT/Cu powder consolidation. The powder ECAP processing with 1, 2, 4 and 8 route C passes was conducted at room temperature.

  • Recently equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) has been employed to produce ultra-fine grain size materials. In this paper pure-Zirconium is considered due to its applicability to nuclear reactors. Among many process parameters of ECAP frictional effect on the plastic deformation of die has been investigated. The back pressure effect due to friction increases the stress level of die especially at the crossing area of channels, which may result in plastic deformation of die. The finite element method has been employed to investigate this issue.
