  • Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia (ALHE) is a rare benign vascular lesion that is characterized by proliferation of small to medium-sized vascular structures lined by histiocytoid or epithelioid endothelial cells and often accompanied by an inflammatory infiltrate comprising lymphocytes, plasma cells and eosinophils. A 34-year-old man without any generalized systemic conditions presented with a slowly enlarging painless swelling in the buccal area. An excisional biopsy was conducted and the diagnosis of Angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia was confirmed. We report a case of angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia of the buccal area in oral cavity and review the previously reported cases and literatures of angiolymphoid hyperplasia with eosinophilia.

  • Sarcoidosis is a chronic multisystemic disorder of unknown cause characterized by presence of noncaseating Epithelioid granuloma in affected organ. It was first reported in 1887 by Hutchinson and is relatively common in western countries. But it is not commonly seen in East Asia including Korea. All parts of the body can be affected, but the lung is the most frequently affected organ. Other common site of involvement include lymph node, eye, skin, etc. It is known that 3~9% of all cases of sarcoidos is associated with bone involvement. Bone involvement usual1y cause no symptom and frequently affect bones in hands an feet. In many cases, it is known to be associated with skin involvement. We recently experienced one case of sarcoidosis which typically showed X-ray finding of sarcoidosis with associated skin lesion(lupus pernio) and report it with review of the literature.

  • Although the characteristic cytologic features of melanoma have been well described the diagnosis of metastatic melanoma by fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) may be difficult in the case of amelanotic melanoma and in the absence of awareness of clinical history. Furthermore, when the breast is the site of initial presentation, it could simulate a primary breast carcinoma leading to misdiagnosis. The recognition of metastatic malignant melanoma in FNAC material is essential to avoid an unnecessary mastectomy and to ensure appropriate chemotherapy. We experienced a case of metastatic melanoma of breast which presented as solitary breast mass in a 56-year-old woman. She had a history of surgical excision of right foot for melanoma one year ago. The cytologic smears were composed of noncohesive epithelioid cells with round or eccentric nuclei, bi-or multi-nucleation, prominent nucleoli, fine chromatin, and intranuclear inclusions. The cytoplasm of tumor cells had scanty melanin pigment but were diffusely positive for S-100 protein.

  • We described the findings of fine needle aspiration cytology of the lung from a patient with Wegener's granulomatosis. Early diagnosis and prompt treatment of the patients with Wegener's granulomatosis is essential for a better prognosis. However, the variety of clinical presentations and nonspecific radiologic infiltrates of Wegener's granulomatosis frequently make the diagnosis difficult. Although an open lung biopsy is required for a firm diagnosis, fine needle aspiration cytology & biopsy preparation can also provide an adequate tissue sample, when the findings of fine needle aspiration are considered with clinical manifestations and ANCA value in the serum. The cytologic smears showed scattered necrotic tissue fragments entrapping many neutrophils and occasional epithelioid cells. Multinucleated giant cells were infrequently observed. Ziehl-Neelsen stain for acid fast bacilli was negative. All the cytologic features recapitulated the histopathologic findings of purulent and necrotizing granulomatous inflammation seen in Wegener's granulomatosis.

  • Solitary fibrous tumor on the pleura is rare but should be included in the differential diagnosis on a peripheral pulmonary nodule. Cytologic features of solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura is not familar to the pathologist and may be misdiagnosed as malignancy. We report fine needle aspiration cytologic(FNAC) findings of a case of solitary fibrous tumor misdiagnosed as adenocarcinoma in a 48-year-old woman. The FNAC displayed a mixture of bland-looking spindle cells and clusters of epithelioid cells, which have hyperchromatic nuclei with prominent nucleoli. The helpful finding to distinguish It from other circumscribed benign and malignant lesions is the presence of fibromyxoid matrix admixed with blood vessels and thin collagen fibers. Familiarity with these features is essential to avoid misdiagnosis and overtreatment.

  • Chordoid glioma of the third ventricle is a rare and challenging tumor to surgery because of its unique anatomical location and its close juxtaposition to the neurovascular structures and hypothalamus. The authors report a case of chordoid glioma of the third ventricle in a 43-year-old woman, who presented with headache and somnolence. The tumor was approached by endoscopic transnasal technique with a favorable result. Histopathologic examination disclosed a neoplastic tissue composed of eosinophilic epithelioid cells, mucinous, periodic acid Schiff-diastase positive, extracellular matrix, and scattered lymphoplasmacytic infiltrates. The best treatment option remains controversial. Customarily, the surgical route to remove chordoid glioma is transcranial; however, the undersurface of the optic chiasm and optic nerves preclude an adequate surgical visualization. In contrast, an expanded endoscopic transnasal approach provides a direct midline corridor to this region without any brain retraction.

  • The incidence of chest wall tumor is rare than those of other portions of the body. The chest wall tumors need special attention about their diagnosis and management than other tumors. From March, 1985 to September, 1994, 33 patients with chest wall tumor underwent surgical treatment, and those were consisted of 28 benign tumors and 5 malignant tumors arising from soft tissue, rib and sternum.Benign tumors were included 11 lipoma, 4 cysticercosis, 2 chondroma and 1 each of fibroma, dermatofibroma, osteochondroma, fibrous dysplasia and hemangioma, and 6 other cases. Malignant chest wall tumors were included 2 metastatic carcinoma,1 each of giant cell tumor, chondrosarcoma and epithelioid sarcoma.Sex ratio of male to female was 1.5:1, and the range of age was 16 to 72 years, and the mean age was about 40 years. Clinical manifestations of chest wall tumor were palpable mass[55% , pain[21% ,tender mass[9% , growing mass[9% and asymptomatic[9% .The all cases were treated surgically, the results were as follows:Local excision 16 cases, wide resection 12 cases, wide resection with chemotherapy 3 cases, each one case of wide resection with radiotherapy and wide resection with chest wall reconstruction.

  • The cytotoxic activities of Cinnamomum cassia (Blume) bark-derived materials toward six human HeLa epithelioid cervix, A549 lung, SK-OV-3 ovarian, SK-MEL-2 melanoma, XF-498 central nerve system, and HCT-15 colon tumor cell lines were evaluated by using sulforhodamine B assay and compared to those of the anticancer agents, cisplatin and mitomycin C. The biologically active constituent of the Cinnamomum bark was characterized as transcinnamaldehyde by spectroscopic analysis. The cytotoxic activity of cinnamaldehyde against HeLa, SK-MEL-2, and HCT -15 cell lines was comparable to that of cisplatin and mitomycin C. The compound showed lower activity against A549, SK-OV-3, and XF-498 cell lines than the anticancer agents. Eugenol exhibited moderate activity against SK-OV3, XF-498, and HCT-15 tumor cells, and trans-cinnamic acid, cinnamyl alcohol, $\alpha-pinene,\;and\;\beta-pinene$ showed little or no activity against model tumor cells. Cinnamaldehyde was not mutagenic against four strains (TA 98, TA 100, TA 1535, and TA 1537) of Salmonella typhimurium (Castel and Chalm). These results indicate at least one pharmacological action of C. cassia.

  • A stable cell line, BSBS (black seabream spleen), was established from the cells in spleen of black seabream, Acanthopagrus schlegeli, and characterized. Subculture maintained more than 60 passages and mophologically, BSBS cell was epithelioid cell. The cells grew optimally at 20℃ in Leibovitz's L-15 medium supplemented with 10% fetal bovine serum with incubation temperature of 20℃. BSBS cells supported the growth of marine birnavirus (MABV Y-6), chum salmon reovirus (CSV), spring viremia of carp virus (SVCV) and hirame rhabdovirus (HIRRV). Thus, the new cell line may be useful for studying wide range of fish viruses.

  • The inhibitory effect of omega-3 such as linolenic acid (LNA), docosahexaenoic acid (DNA) and eicosapentaenoic acid(EPA) on the growth of normal cell lines and cancer cell lines was evaluated by 3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyItetrazolium bromide (MTT) and 2,3-bis-2-methoxy-4-nitro-5-sulfophenyl]-2H-tetrazolium-5-caboxanilide (XTT) methods. LNA was found to decrease the cell viability of human oral epithelioid carcinoma cells (KB) in the MTT assay, whereas EPA appeared to inhibit the cell adhesion activity of human skin melanoma cells (SK-MEL-3) in the XTT assay analysis. DPPH radical scavenging activity was examined on LNA, DHA and EPA at the concentration of 100 ${\mu}M$, where they showed about 53% scavenging activity. These results suggest that omega-3 unsaturated fatty acid has a potential anticancer activity.
