  • Data used for this analysis were 281 outbreaks of food poisoning, excluding single cases, reported during 1981-1989. Patient size of 10 persons or less occupied 38.0% of the out breaks. The most frequently isolated bacterial pathogen was Vibrio, 35.4% ; followed by Salmonella, 27.2% ; Staphylococcus , 17.7% ; Escherichia coli , 17.7%. Plant toxin occupied 64% of poisonous substances. Sixty-six percent of food poisoning reported in urban area resulted from meals consumed in food consumed at home. Raw and under-cooked seafoods were the major cousative foods in food service establishments. Pork which frequently serviced at home ceremonies wes the major causative food in rural area. Mushroom poisoning generally occurred during regular meals at home.

  • We have previously isolated seven strains of spiral form bacteria, which have shown several similar characteristics to Leptospira from patient with epidemic pulmonary hemorrhagic fever and matural paddy water. Further studies have performed to characterize them. All of the isolated bacteria were aerobic, gram negative and spiral form and their growth were completely inhibited at temperature below $13^{\circ}C\;and\;50^{\circ}C$. In sensitivity test to drugs, the bacteria were resistant to the bile salts, 5-Fu and Amphotericine B, but sensitive to the 8-Azaguanine. The isolated bacteria as well as 5 serotypes of Leptospira interrogans reacted the patient sera and it was also shown that antisera from rabbit immunized with the isolated bacteria reacted with 5 serotypes of Leptospira interrogans. These results suggest that the isolated bacteria may belong to the genus Leptospira.

  • This study explores the influence of health behaviors and individual attributes on adolescent overweight and obesity using data from Wave II (Add Health). Structural equation model/ path analysis using maximum likelihood estimation was utilized to analyze the relationships of health behaviors and attributes with obesity. Results of the model reveal that the causal paths (adolescents' attributes and health behaviors) for overweight and obesity were different for African American and Caucasian adolescents. Generally, African Americans were more susceptible to overweight and obesity than Caucasians. Although increasing levels of vigorous physical activities lowers the risk for obesity among African American and Caucasian adolescents alike, low family SES and being sedentary were associated with overweight and obesity among Caucasians. No significant associations were found among African Americans. Increased hours of sleep at night relate positively with obesity among African Americans. These findings suggest important elements in the consideration of race in developing effective intervention and prevention approaches for curbing the obesity epidemic among U.S. adolescents.

  • This thesis investigates the Quantitative aspect of epidemic phenomena utilizing the analytical method of discrete time systeMs based on the theory of Markov processes. In particular, the pattern on the epidemic character of turberculosis controlled by prophylaxis and BCG vaccinatioll was analyzed by the markovian model of tuberculosis system which is derived according to the ecologic relationship between nine epidemiologic states of individuals. The quantitative aspects of the model were characterized by digital computer simulations.

  • Objectives : Hand-Foot-Mouth disease is a highly contagious disease most often seen in children. It is caused most commonly by the coxsackievirus A16 and clinically characterized by vesicles appearing on the hands, feet and in the mouth. The purpose of this study is a approach to the oriental medical treatment of Hand-Foot-Mouth disease. Method : We studied the clinical literatures of traditional chinese medicine about Hand-Foot-Mouth disease after the year 2000. Result : Hand-Foot-Mouth disease are similar to epidemic febrile disease(溫病) dampwarm syndrome(濕溫), and epidemic disease(時疫) in Oriental Medicine. Conclusion : In oriental medical treatment is classified into the treatment of internal use, external use, and combination treatment of chinese and western medicine.

  • Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) and transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) infections are considered difficult to distinguish clinically and histopathologically. Prompt differentiation between PEDV- and TGEV-associated enteritis would greatly facilitate the management of disease in countries where PEDV and TGEV are epizootic. Rapid differential diagnosis and treatment are crucial to reducing mortality and morbidity from PEDV- and TGEV-induced enteritis in piglets. The objective for this study was to develop a protocol to differentiate between PEDV and TGEV directly from formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tissue, using a multiplex reverse transcription-nested polymerase chain reaction (RT-nPCR) assay. • This paper deals with a delayed SEIRS epidemic model with pulse vaccination and crowded incidence rate. Moreover, the case of vertical and horizontal transmission is considered. By using the discrete dynamical system determined by the stroboscopic map, the exact infection-free periodic solution of the SEIRS model is obtained. Further, by employing the comparison arguments, we prove that under the condition that $R_*$ < 1 the infection-free periodic solution is globally attractive, and that under the condition that $R^*$ > 1 the disease is uniformly persistent, which means that after some period of time the disease will become endemic.

  • They have brought many inconsistencies by making much of Wang Sukhwa's six-meridian-transmutation-theory based on Yeollon, Somun in Oriental traditional medicine. On this many medical men such like Hwa Ta have raised objections to that or insisted on its repeal. Wang Geungdang and Yang Soi posed the problem of editing tables of contents, Bang Yujip and Ga Geum etc. gave explanations of fields of six-meridian, Un Cheolcho and Jang Gyeongak etc. presented cause and direction of transmutation. And Gilik Dongdong insisted on its repeal. Sanghannon was the theory that was arranged various experiences of acute epidemic diseases. But they didn't recognize the differences between analogous epidemic diseases, regarded as the same things in Oriental traditional medicine, and this made many inconsistencies. This is the reason why many medical men raised objections to Wang Sukhwa's six-meridian-transmutation-theory.

  • In order to investigate the causes of epidemic out break of rice blast disease in 1978, investigations were undertaken in respect of climatic conditions, variety, cultural practice and plant pathology. During 1978, especially in August at heading time, it was higher temperature and humidity, higher frequency and amount of rainfall, lower amount of sunshine and solar radiation than less blast infested years. Nitrogen content in rice plant was higher than previous years. Acreage increase of semi-dwarf varieties brought about a result of proportional increase of new blast races which are able to infect the semi-dwarf varieties. It was concluded that those conditions mentioned above might have caused the result of severe neck blast disease in rice varieties in Korea, 1978.

  • Postpolio syndrome (PPS) refers to a constellation of neuromuscular and orthopedic symptoms and signs that have been noted to occur in patients with remote antecedent poliomyelitis. It has been increasingly recognized that individuals recovering from acute poliomyelitis develop new symptoms, most commonly weakness, fatigue, and pain that develops decades after initial disease in the region previously affected. Associated symptoms may include dysphagia, respiratory insufficiency, new muscular atrophy, dysarthria, muscle cramps, fasciculations, sleep abnormalities, and cold intolerance. Although the concepts of PPS was first described in the late 1800s, it was not until nearly 100 years later that the concept of PPS was more widely recognized and defined. This was due largely to the polio epidemic of the 1940s and 1950s that left many survivors in the world. The virtual epidemic of PPS that occurred among these polio survivors in the 1980s and 1990s has served as a catalyst to attract medical attention to this syndrome.
