  • Recently, applications of biomass-based plastics have increased according to the eco-friendly policy of the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions in domestic and foreign government. In this study, a paper plastic composite was produced by compounding polypropylene and micronized paper powder that was prepared using dry pulverization technology. Subsequently, the specimen of paper plastic was verified with mechanical properties, formability and product safety test to confirm the suitable packaging materials for food packaging. Paper plastics showed slightly lower mechanical properties than currently commercialized PP composites. However, paper plastics are valuable materials as environmentally friendly carbon-reducing material because of high biocarbon content, light weight features and applicability of existing manufacturing machines or system.

  • In recent years, the particle number emissions rather than particulate mass emissions in automotive engine have become the subject of controversial discussions. Recent results from the health effects studies imply that it is possible that particulate mass does not properly correlated with the variety of health effects attributed to diesel exhaust. So, the concern is instead now focusing on nano-sized particles emitted from I. C. engine. This study has been performed for the better understanding about the engine nano-particle for 3-measurement systems with different measuring principle. Firstly, EEPS is a newly introduced instrument for size distribution measurement of engine exhaust particles. It can measure nano-particles with an adequate resolution and in real time. In this study, the characteristics of EEPS were compared with ELPI and SMPS. As a research results, EEPS showed a same effect of engine load on the size distribution with ELPI and SMPS. But the quantitative results of EEPS were more similar to SMPS than ELPI, because the EEPS and SMPS use a same principle for classifying particles by size. The capability for transient measurement of EEPS was equivalent to that of ELPI.

  • The objective of this study was to estimate physical properties and fishing performances of net twine with improved PBS copolymer resin (Bio-new), the existing PBS/PBAT blending resin (Bio-old) and commercial Nylon (Nylon). The tensile strength of Bio-new monofilament was equal to Bio-old and the elongation of Bio-new was about 6 % higher than that of Bio-old in wet condition. The physical properties tests were carried out to estimate breaking load and stiffness in dry and wet conditions, respectively. In the results, the breaking load of Nylon netting was the highest whereas the elongation of Bio-new was 1.4 times higher than that of Nylon netting in wet condition. The breaking load of Bio-old netting was about 9.2 % higher than that of Bio-new netting. However, the elongation of the Bio-new netting was about 3% higher than that of Bio-old. The stiffness of the Bio-new compared to Bio-old was improved about 34 % in dry condition and about 32 % in wet condition. The filed experiments of the fishing performance were conducted with three kinds of drift nets with different netting materials in the coastal sea of Jeju. The each experimental drift net made of different materials showed the similar fishing performance. Bio-old drift net yielded less catches of small sized yellow croaker than other drift nets. The netting materials affected the fishing performance and length distribution of catches in the drift nets.

  • To solve environmental problems, research and efforts are required to reduce leather waste that is generated in large quantities during the leather manufacturing process. Leatherboard is a plate-like material that is made by crushing leather waste, such as trimming or shaving scraps and mixing fibers, pulp, rubber, and adhesives. The aim of this study is to provide basic data on the localization of leatherboard manufacturing technology for outsoles, which are increasingly in demand due to their excellent performance and price competitiveness. Interviews with experts and related organizations were conducted to investigate the related global technology trends. Also, the performance of three products that can be used as reference materials were evaluated and compared. As part of the research and efforts to reduce the amount of leather waste generated, high-performance materials using leather waste were developed and commercialized by major western companies. In Korea, various efforts have been made since 2000, and some companies have produced leatherboard for interior uses. However, the amount of waste recycled relative to that generated is not large due to the limited demand. Natural leather soles perform better than leatherboard soles in all evaluation aspects. In the case of leatherboard, performance varied by manufacturer. German products showed flexibility resistance and dimensional stability, thereby meeting performance requirements. However, abrasion resistance and cleavage resistance were slightly below the required performance standards, and research and development is needed to improve performance in those areas. Currently, it is impossible to evaluate the performance of domestic products due to underdevelopment. However, if the development of process technology continues based on the performance evaluation results of the best leatherboard in the shoe industry, materials for outsoles will be able to be produced domestically with prices competitiveness while realizing natural leather materials performance to some extent.

  • An environmentally-friendly nanocoating method that effectively adds flame retardant(FR) and gas shielding properties to combustible polymeric construction materials such as flexible polyurethane (PU) foam was studied. Naturally-driven two-dimensional(2D) nanomaterials such as graphene oxide (GO) can exhibit liquid crystalline (LC) properties in aqueous solutions, enabling uniform coatings on the various substrates including 3D-porous foams. LC phase-assisted coating serves as 3D-scaffold, facilitating the introduction of small molecules having antioxidant capabilities such as dopamine which is to form uniformly stacked FR coating. Additionally, the structural characteristics of the 2D-materials can effectively hinder the migration of toxic gases and flammable substances in the gas phase generated during combustion. This LC phase flame retardant coating technology could be a new approach to provide environmentally friendly and effective flame retardant and gas barrier properties to various types of polymeric materials.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the children's different responses on the playground and facilities by the materials. For the study, the overall satisfaction on the playgrounds, the visiting frequency, the staying time, and olfactory and tactile responses were collected and analyzed by the materials. The materials for the playing facilities were categorized into 3 different groups ; steel, regular form wood and natural wood. The each group was also estimated and analyzed through the SD (sematic differential) scale which consisted of landscape adjectives. According the results, children liked and most highly scored the playground and playing facilities with natural wood in every items; overall satisfaction, visiting frequency, the staying time, and olfactory and tactile. On the other hand, the steel facilities were most negatively assessed in almost every items. Especially children felt the steel facilities were not environmentally friendly and very boring, comparing to the others. However, only 6 cases were analyzed in this study, because there were few playgrounds with natural wood facilities, so it is necessary to research on more cases to generalize these results.

  • Flexible electronics are the electronics on flexible substrates such as a plastic, fabric or paper, so that they can be folded or attached on any curved surfaces. They are currently recognized as one of the most innovating future technologies especially in the area of portable electronics. The conventional vacuum deposition and photolithographic patterning methods are well developed for inorganic microelectronics. However, flexible polymer substrates are generally chemically incompatible with resists, etchants and developers and high temperature processes used in conventional integrated circuit processing. Additionally, conventional processes are time consuming, very expensive and not environmentally friendly. Therefore, there are strong needs for new materials and a novel processing scheme to realize flexible electronics. This paper introduces current research trends for flexible electronics based on (a) nanoparticles, and (b) novel processing schemes: nanomaterial based direct patterning methods to remove any conventional vacuum deposition and photolithography processes. Among the several unique nanomaterial characteristics, dramatic melting temperature depression (Tm, 3nm particle~$150^{\circ}C$) and strong light absorption can be exploited to reduce the processing temperature and to enhance the resolution. This opens a possibility of developing a cost effective, low temperature, high resolution and environmentally friendly approach in the high performance flexible electronics fabrication area.

  • Modern society is filled with the pursuit of material wealth and great convenience due to high technology that has been introduced to all facets of society. There is no exception to this in the field of construction. Modern construction, however, has caused environmental destruction and pollution, disturbing the coexistence of humans and nature. Therefore, this thesis aims to explore how humans and nature can maintain a mutually beneficial relationship by looking into the construction of Jeju's traditional dwelling house. This thesis examines the geographical features of Jeju and looks into how Jeju people have adapted themselves to nature. It is assumed that geographical features have created Jeju's unique environment and style of architecture and differentiated Jeju's traditional houses from those of other regions. Also, it is considered that geographical features had a large impact on traditional construction such as the floor plan and the layout of buildings. Accordingly, this thesis explores the way traditional houses protected house dwellers from the natural environment and examines the wisdom of our ancestors who took advantage of the natural environment. In addition, this thesis aims to contribute to creating Jeju's unique construction culture and environment by studying materials, structures, and forms that were applied to the traditional houses of Jeju.
