Particle suspension is frequently observed in many natural flows such as in the atmosphere and the ocean as well as in various engineering flows. Recently, airborne micro or nano-scale particles in atmosphere attract much attention from environmental society since small particle cause serious environmental problems in the industrialized areas. Also, the characteristics of such heavy particles' behavior is quite different from its fluid particles because the inertia force and buoyance force acting on the heavy particles are different than those acting on fluid particles. Therefore, our studies is to investigate the characteristics of the behavior of heavy particles considering the inertia effect with or without gravity effect, but do not consider modification of turbulence by the particles, that is one-way interaction. We carried out direct numerical simulation of isotropic turbulence with particles under the Stokes drag assumption for a spherical particle. These results can be used in the development of a stochastic model for predicting particle's behavior.

16 APEX floats, autonomous profiling floats deployed as part of the Array for Real-time Geostrophic Oceanography (ARGO) program, are used to understand the currents at 800 m underwater in the southwestern East Sea. The flow penetrates into the Ulleung basin (UB) through two paths: an extension of the southward flowing the North Korean Cold Water along the east coast of Korea and between Ulleung Island and Dok island. Flows at 800 m are observed range 0.2 to 4.29 cm/sec and the variability in the north in the DB is stronger than that in the south. The eddy kinetic energy is found a few $cm^{2}$$S^{-2}$. In the UB, cyclonic flows from 0.3 - 1.6 cm/see are observed with the bottom topography.
The objectives of this study are to deduce a problem of existing subcatchment width equation in Storm Water Management Model(SWMM) and to analyze the suitability of a new adjusted subcatchment width equation on both ideally assumed watersheds and an actual urban watershed area. The problems of existing subcatchment equation are issued on the theoretical review of the equation and from the model application on different types of simplified assumed watershed. The adjusted equation, proposed in this study, that considers the pipe flows in addition to the surface flows on small subcatchment can improve the limitation of existing equation when applied on the assumed watersheds. Also, Gunja watershed with 96.3 ha is selected and collected rainfall-runoff events for the feasibility study of the proposed equation on actual urban watershed area. The results represent that the simulated flows from adjusted equation rather than the simulated flows from existing equation are well agreed with observed ones.
To analyze the flow and density variations in debris flows, a two-phase finite volume model simplified with momentum equations was constructed in this study. The Hershel-Buckley rheology model was employed in this model to account for the internal and basal friction of debris flows and was utilized to analyze complex topography and entrainments of basal soil beds. In order to numerically solve the debris flow analysis model, a finite volume model with the Harten-Lax-van Leer-Contact method was used to solve the conservation equation for the debris flow interface. Case studies of circular dam failure, non-Newtonian fluid dam failure, and multiple debris flows were analyzed using the proposed model to evaluate shock absorption capacity, numerical isotropy, model accuracy, and mass conservation. The numerical stability and correctness of the debris flow analysis of this analysis model were proven by the analysis results. Additionally, the rate of debris flow with various rheological properties was systematically simulated, and the effect of debris flow rheological properties on behavior was analyzed.
In the adjacent seas of Cheju Island, the oceanographic conditions show low salinity surface waters starting in May. This water flows from the southeast part of the China Coastal Water, which flows southeastward along the Great Yangtze Sand Bank until April, with the help of southeasterly winds and flows from the adjacent sea off Cheju Island. In May, the Tsushima Warm Current and the low salinity surface water fluctuate in short and long-term periods as influenced by Yellow Sea Cold Water, which flows to the bottom layer at the western entrance of Cheju Strait. Temperature and salinity fronts in the northeastern sea area of U Island are formed in the boundary area between the Tsushima Warm Current, which expands towards Cheju Island from the southeastern sea area of Cheju Island and Hows out from the eastern entrance of the strait. Seasonally, additional oceanographic conditions, such as coastal counter-currents, which flow southward, appears within limited areas in the adjacent eastern and western seas of Cheju Island.

MLP (Multi dimensional Limiting Process) is implemented to simulate shallow water flows, and its performance over conventional TVD limiters in multidimensional flows is verified through several numerical simulations. MLP was developed to control oscillations for multi-dimensional compressible flows and proved to improve accuracy, efficiency and robustness in compressible flows. In this study, we applies MLP to modeling shallow water equations(SWEs) given that the SWEs are amenable to be solved using the large range of numerical methods developed to deal with compressible flows and MLP has been yet used for SWEs. Simulation results through the benchmark tests show that MLP has favorable features such as numerical oscillation control and convergence behaviors comparable to the conventional limiters. Both numerical accuracy and stability are improved in multi-dimensional discontinuous flows.
The purpose of this study was to analyze the trophic structures and the energy flows in the lower reaches of the Nakdong River using the Ecopath model (Walter et al., 1997). The sampling and analyses were carried out at 6 sampling sites of the lower reaches of the Nakdong River on May and November in 2007. Total of 9 groups detritus, macrophytes, phytoplankton, zooplankton, zoobenthos, Cyprinus carpio, Hemibarbus labeo, Micropterus salmoides and other fishes were considered to assess the trophic relationship, energy flows and interactions among them in the study. As a result, it was concluded that the lower reaches of the Nakdong River was consisted of producers (Detritus, Macrophytes, Phytoplankton), primary consumers (Zooplankton, Zoobenthos, Cyprinus carpio, Hemibarbus labeo, Other fishes) and secondary consumer (Micropterus salmoides). The total system throughput was estimated at 2.7 kg m$^{-2}$ year$^{-1}$ including a consumption of 52%, exports of 9.1%, respiratory flows of 18.0% and flows into detritus of 20.9%. MTI (mixed trophic impacts) analysis demonstrated that Pseudobagrus fulvidraco had positive impact on Cyprinus carpio, Carassius cuvieri and Carassius auratus. On the other hand, other fishes had negative impact on Cyprinus carpio, Carassius cuvieri and Carassius auratus. Also, all the functional groups except detritus had a negative impact on themselves.
Combined sewer system (CSS) has been built in the most urban areas across the nation. During dry weather conditions, CSS works fine. But during heavy rain storms, combined sewage frequently overflows into the stream. This study simulated the hydrologic cycle and pollutant loads (BOD, SS, TN and TP) in the Mokgamcheon watershed considering combined sewer overflows (CSOs). PC storm water management model (PCSWMM) was used for continuous simulation and CSOs are considered using the flow divider. Sensitivity analysis, calibration and verification for water quantity and quality are carried out. To verify CSOs, field measurements of CSOs are compared with simulated results. As a result, 41.3% of precipitation flows into the stream directly and 1.1% of water supply flows into stream as CSOs. 6.5% of BOD total loads, 12.0% of SS, 13.6% of TP, and 29.2% of TN are from CSOs. This result will be effective to the integrated watershed management for sustainability.
