An Analysis of the Traffic Noise Measurement Plans of 'Apartment Complexes' - A Case on the North Riverside Expressway in Seoul - ('아파트단지' 교통소음측정방안에 관한 연구 - 강북 강변도로 사례를 중심으로 -)

  • This study conducts a theoretical research on road traffic noise. Also, the domestic road noise forecast models were compared each other and analyzed with advanced countries' models to indicate the application possibility and problems. For the establishment of a general formula, we compared the forecasted value with the actual value applied in the formula proposed by the National Environment Institute, and examined the necessary improvement of the domestic road traffic noise forecast model. Also, a regression model was built to examine the relationship between traffic factors and noise. The traffic volume and speed are the main traffic factors used in this formula to affect the noise. From the results, it was found that the speed had a closer relationship with the noise rather than the traffic volume. Therefore, to decrease road noise, it is more important to control traffic speed. The spatial effect of road traffic noise within the apartment complexes was used in the case study to derive location-specific adjustment values. We surveyed the road traffic noise of three apartment complexes, and found that the road traffic noise within each complex was affected at plane level as well as at three-dimensionally. In other words, as the distance from the sound origin grows farther, noise level decreases. Also, it was found that noise increases as heigt goes up, but drops when the height goes beyond a certain level, and that the effect of noise decreases if there are obstacles along the path of the noise direction. Therefore, apartment site design should be done with consideration of the effects of noise in the future.

  • Due to rapid development of many cities in Korea, many public facilities are required to be built as well as complementary civil structures. Consequently, a number of tunnel constructions are currently carried out throughout the country, and many more tunnels are planned to be constructed in the near future. Tunnel excavation in a city often causes serious damage to above-ground structures and sewer system because of unexpected settlement. In order to prevent the destruction, the tunnel, which bypasses the center of a city, must be specially evaluated for its influence to other structure. In addition, since a slight disturbance of above-ground structure causes numerous public complaints and civil appeals, it must be approached with different method than the mountain tunnels. In this paper, the evaluation method using the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) has been studied. The method begins with an analysis of the minimal sectional area. If its result can be used to approximate the general influence of the whole section, the actual evaluation using ANN will take off. In addition, it also studies the construction management method which reflects the real time soil behavior and environment influence during construction using Geographic Information System (GIS).

Spatio-Temporal Characteristics of Droughts in Korea: Construction of Drought Severity-Area-Duration Curves (가뭄의 시공간적 분포 특성 연구: 가뭄심도-가뭄면적-가뭄지속기간 곡선의 작성)

  • The rainfall depth-area-duration analysis which is used to characterize precipitation extremes for specification of so-called design storms, provides a basis for evaluation of drought severity when storm depth is replaced by an appropriate measure of drought severity. So we propose a method for constructing drought severity-area-duration curves in this study. Monthly precipitation data over the whole Korea are used to compute SPI. Such SPIs are abstracted to several independent spatial components from EOF analysis. Using Kriging method, these spatial components are used to constitute grid-based SPI data set over the whole Korea including Jeju island with $6km{\times}6km$ resolution. After identifying main drought events, the drought severity-area-duration curves for these events over 32-year period of record are finally constructed. As a result, such curves show the similar shape with storm-based curves in the sense that the drought severity (or rainfall depth) is inversely proportional to drought area from the curves, but drought-based curves are different from storm-based curves in the sense that the drought severity decreasing rate with respect to drought area is much less than depth decreasing rate.

An Experimental Study on a Characteristics of Flow around Groynes for Groyne Spacing (수제 설치간격에 따른 수제주변 흐름특성에 관한 실험 연구)

  • In design of groyne series, groyne spacing is a important factor and have an effect on not only the characteristics of backward and recirculation flow in groyne zone but also flow field in main channel. It is necessary study about flow pattern of recirculation zone and main channel that is a cause of bad change, local scour and bank erosion by groyne spacing. In this study, flow variation of groyne zone and main chanel for spacing of groynes were analyzed from the experiment results in order to offer a fundamental data that can be used to decide the proper groyne spacing. Experiments were conducted 12 cases for groyne spacing(L) by groyne length(l) rate and the velocity profile was measured using LSPIV and ADV. From the results, two vortex flows developed in recirculation zone for L/l=3~9 and three vortex flows developed over L/l=10. The velocity of backward flow in recirculation zone was decreased up to 20% over L/l=4. The velocity of main channel flow was increased from 1.3 to 2.0 times by groyne spacing and the rate of velocity increased by increasing groyne spacing. The maximum velocity occurred in 0.7~0.8 times of groyne spacing downstream of upper groyne.

A Study on Determination of the Minimum Vertical Spring Stiffness of Track Pads Considering Running Safety (열차주행안전을 고려한 궤도패드의 최소 수직 스프링계수 결정에 관한 연구)

  • Railway noise and vibration has been recognized as major problems with the speed-up of rolling stock. As a kind of solution to these problems, the decrease of stiffness of track pad have been tried. However, in this case, overturning of rail due to lateral force should be considered because it can have effect on the safety of running train. Therefore, above two things - decrease of stiffness of track pad and overturning of rail due to lateral force - should be considered simultaneously for the appropriate determination of spring coefficient of track pad. With this viewpoint, minimum spring coefficient of track pad is estimated through the comparison between the theoretical relationship about the overturning of rail and 3-dimensional FE analysis result. Two kinds of Lateral force and wheel load are used as input loads. Extracted values from the conventional estimation formula and the Shinkansen design loads are used. It is found that the overturning of rail changes corresponding to the change of the stiffness of track pad and the ratio of lateral force to wheel load. Moreover, it is found that the analysis model can have influence on the results. Through these procedure, minimum spring coefficient of track pad is estimated.

Dynamic Performance Estimation of the Incrementally PSC Girder Railway Bridge by Modal Tests and Moving Load Analysis (다단계 긴장 PSC 거더 철도교량의 동특성 실험 및 주행열차하중 해석에 의한 동적성능 평가)

  • As an alternative to conventional prestressed concrete (PSC) girders, various types of PSC girders are either under development or have already been applied in bridge structures. Incrementally prestressed concrete girder is one of these newly developed girders. According to the design concept, these new types of PSC girders have the advantages of requiring less self-weight while having the capability of longer spans. However, the dynamic interaction between bridge superstructures and passing trains is one of the critical issues concerning these railway bridges designed with more flexibility. Therefore, it is very important to evaluate modal parameters of newly designed bridges before doing dynamic analyses. In the present paper, a 25 meters long full scale PSC girder was fabricated as a test specimen and modal testing was carried out to evaluate modal parameters including natural frequencies and modal damping ratios at every prestressing stage. During the modal testing, a digitally controlled vibration exciter as well as an impact hammer is applied, in order to obtain precise frequency response functions and the modal parameters are evaluated varying with construction stages. Prestressed force effects on changes of modal parameters are analyzed at every incremental prestressing stage. With the application of reliable properties from modal experiments, estimation of dynamic performances of PSC girder railway bridges can be obtained from various parametric studies on dynamic behavior under the passage of moving train. Dynamic displacements, impact factor, acceleration of the slab, end rotation of the girder, and other important dynamic performance parameters are checked with various speeds of the train.

  • The goal of this study is to develop a realistic methodology for determination of the Life-Cycle Cost (LCC)-effective optimal seismic retrofit and maintenance strategy of deteriorating bridges. The proposed methodology is based on the concept of minimum LCC which is expressed as the sum of present value of seismic retrofit costs, expected maintenance costs, and expected economic losses with the constraints such as design requirements and acceptable risk of death. The proposed methodology is applied to the LCC-effective optimal seismic retrofit and maintenance strategy of a steel bridge considered as a example bridge in the accompanying study, and various conditions such as corrosion environments and Average Daily Traffic Volumes (ADTVs) are considered to investigate the effects on total expected LCC. In addition, to verify the validity of the developed methodology, the results are compared with the existing methodology. From the numerical investigation, it may be positively expected that the proposed methodology can be effectively utilized as a practical tool for the decision-making of LCC-effective optimal seismic retrofit and maintenance strategy of deteriorating bridges.

Determination of Not-Permitted Entrance/Exit Section at Curb Areas (단지 내 진출입 불허구간의 적정길이 산정에 관한 연구)

  • At present, many problems in traffic operation and safety occurs since there is no clear design criteria on designating the not-permitted entrance/exit section at curb areas within complex areas. Even, there is no specific and detailed researches on the not-permitted entrance/exit section by now. This research calculated the proper length of the entrance/exit section at curb areas by dividing the access not-permitted section into the two sections. First, the calculation of the entrance section was done by considering the location of crosswalks, stop line clearance, the queue length of vehicles approaching to second lanes, and marginal distance for safety have been considered. Second, the calculation of the exit section was done by comparing and analyzing the distance between cars of the entrance section according to the investigation point and the distance considering the location of crosswalks, the behavior of exit vehicles and the length of vehicles. In conclusion, by presenting the proper length in consideration of the traffic operation and safety on the access not-permitted section within complex areas, it can be used as a traffic safety improvement alternative and will be contributed in establishing and operating the proper installation criteria for the access not-permitted section within complex areas.

Application of a Fictitious Axial Force Factor to Determine Elastic and Inelastic Effective Lengths for Column Members of Steel Frames (강프레임 기둥 부재의 탄성 및 비탄성 유효좌굴길이 산정을 위한 가상축력계수의 적용)

  • In design of steel frames, it is generally believed that elastic system buckling analysis cannot predict real behaviors of structures, while inelastic system buckling analysis can give informative buckling behaviors of individual members considering inelastic material behavior. However, the use of Euler buckling equation with these system buckling analyses have the inherent problem that the methods evaluate unexpectedly large effective lengths of members having relatively small axial forces. This paper proposes a new method of obtaining elastic and inelastic effective lengths of all members in steel frames. Considering a fictitious axial force factor for each story of frames, the proposed method determines the effective lengths using the inelastic stiffness reduction factor and the iterative eigenvalue analysis. In order to verify the validity of the proposed method, the effective lengths of example frames by the proposed method were compared to those of previously established methods. As a result, the proposed method gives reasonable effective lengths of all members in steel frames. The effect of inelastic material behavior on the effective lengths of members was also discussed.

Seismic Fragility Analysis for Probabilistic Performance Evaluation of PSC Box Girder Bridges (확률론적 내진성능평가를 위한 PSC Box 거더교의 지진취약도 해석)

  • Seismic fragility curves of a structure represent the probability of exceeding the prescribed structural damage state for a given various levels of ground motion intensity such as peak ground acceleration (PGA), spectral acceleration ($S_a$) and spectral displacement ($S_d$). So those are very essential to evaluate the structural seismic performance and seismic risk. The purpose of this paper is to develop seismic fragility curves for PSC box girder bridges. In order to construct numerical fragility curve of bridge structure using nonlinear time history analysis, a set of ground motions corresponding to design spectrum are artificially generated. Assuming a lognormal distribution, the fragility curve is estimated by using the methodology proposed by Shinozuka et al. PGA is simple and generally used parameter in fragility curve as ground motion intensity. However, the PGA has not good relationship with the inelastic structural behavior. So, $S_a$ and $S_d$ with more direct relationship for structural damage are used in fragility analysis as more useful intensity measures instead of PGA. The numerical fragility curves based on nonlinear time history analysis are compared with those obtained from simple method suggested in HAZUS program.
