Objectives: This study aims to examine receptor-perceived characteristics of environmental and health damage in areas surrounded by industrial workplaces using environmental complaints collected by local governments in Korea. Methods: The environmental complaint data related to workplaces was collected by local governments at each municipality between the years 2015 and 2017. We analyzed the complaint data from the Busan area by the type of business (industry classification), the content of complaints (odor, smoke, noise, and certain health damage), and the frequency of complaints. Results: Among the workplaces examined, industry categories related to retail and service received the highest frequency of complaints related to noise. On the other hand, complaints of dust and odors were raised in higher frequency against manufacturing industries, indicating that air pollution was the main driver of such complaints. Most of the complaints regarding health effects from industries also contained other complaints, such as odor, noise, and dust. Our results indicate that environmental discomfort can lead to more serious health damage, and should be dealt with more seriously. Further management plans for mitigating discomforts such as noise are necessary. Conclusion: This study can be used as background data for identifying the policy priorities related to vulnerable areas polluted by industry and will contribute to improving the environmental health of residents in identified areas.

Vast quantities of environmental pollutants from construction projects are causing significant damage to nearby local communities and thus generate environmental complaints. The construction company, responsible for compensating and resolving environmental complaints, suffers economic damages due to additional expenditures and schedule delays in construction projects. Meanwhile, the construction industry can stagnate from a broader perspective. Therefore, this study aimed to propose a framework for developing an automated management system which consists of two models for environmental complaints in construction projects: (i) the prediction model: a model for predicting environmental complaints based on factors related to environmental complaints; and (ii) the prevention model: a model for providing construction companies with the optimal prevention measure to effectively prevent environmental complaints according to the results of the prediction model. In addition, the algorithm for integrating the developed models into the management system in construction projects was proposed. Eventually, the application of the management system to construction projects can ensure the profitability of construction companies and mitigate damage from environmental pollutants to the nearby local community.

Conflicts in public construction projects become more serious and complex so that they have a negative effect on performance of projecets. Conflicts in public construction projects are defined as expanding in complaints. This study analyzes the relationship structure and effect on performance between complaints and conflicts. First of all, 219 survey data collected from industry experts were used to derive complaints arising from the project and to understand the characteristics of each complaint. In the case of environmental damages, rather than environmental damage during construction, harmful substances or effects that can occur in completed facilities cause complaints from local residents, and opposition from environmental groups has a great effect on time and cost increase. As for safety damage, civil complaints related to prevention and countermeasures for safety accidents occur frequently, and additional construction affects cost increases. Through this study, it is possible to understand the serious complaints that are prone to conflict in public construction projects, their frequency, and the performance of the project.
The environmental influence in tunnel construction is the drying of the ground water, the drop of the ground water level, and noise and vibration by tunnel excavation. The environmental influence can cause the change of natural ecosystem and the source of popular complaints. In case of popular complaints, the tunnel construction can be stopped or the construction period can be extended. Also, the financial loss may be reached to hundreds of billions won. The technology development to minimize the environmental influence in the tunnel construction is very important in order to control popular complaints and to preserve ecosystem. It should be required the investigation, the evaluation, and the assessment of environmental impact to reduce environmental influence in the tunnel construction. The objective of this research is to review the environmental impact assessment in Korea and to introduce the environmental protection technology which minimizes the environmental influence generated in the tunnel construction.
In an attempt to evaluate working conditions and hazardous environmental factors, a survey on health problems was conducted for 721 employees from 18 industrial plants in Young Dung Po and Sung Dong districts of Seoul in the period from May 1975 to Feb, 1976. The questionnaire and survey was inclusive of all illnesses known as most common to industrial workers (according to the report by Korea Industrial Health Association) of this country and envi ronmental factors pointed out by the workers. The results were as following. 1. The over whelming majority of complaints were psychiatric, ear, eye, and digestive disorders. 2. Those whose work time is the longest have a propotionately higer incidence of complaints especially in eye, ear, neuromusculoskeletal, and neurosensory systems. 3. In females whose occupational history is relatively short, a higher incidence of digestive and skin section disorders was noted and this is especially true among those working in night shift. 4. Among machinery industry workers, most complaints were of eye, ear, and neuro musculoskeletal disturbances, and this fact seems to be closely related to physical over works. 5. Dust and noise were pointed out by the largest number of workers as undisirable conditions in work environment. 6. Distribution of complaints are closely related to the type of industry, and in comparison with the result reported by Korea Industrial Health Association in 1972, the prevalence rates of occupational disorder were similar in our study,
In order to evaluate the physical and psychological health effects of air pollutants from new building materials, 100 employees who worked in new buildings were given a general health questionnaire, and the prevalence of their subjective complaints was measured. The collected data were classified according to age, gender, smoking status, profession, working time, sleep time, life style, and length of employment. The results obtained were summarized as follows: The THI lie scale scores were significantly higher among the older respondents. Compared to males, females showed a significantly higher level in the depression itemas well asa tendency toward high ratios of physical and psychological complaints. The smoking group showed higher scores regarding health complaints related to most physical and psychological items. Smokers showed significantly increased respiratory organ complaints compared to nonsmokers. Those with a profession showed significantly higher level of nervousness. The group of those working 7 to 10 hours group showed higher rates of complaints in the multiple subjective symptoms and mouth/anus items than the group working less than 2 hours. Those living an irregular life showed a tendency toward higher rates of complaints for most physical and psychological subjective factors. Those who were satisfied with their environments showed significantly lower scores in the mouth/anus, impulsiveness, mental irritability, depression, and nervousness items. In summary, this study shows that the health complaint scores regarding physical and psychological symptoms tended to be higher among the unsatisfied group, the irregular life group, the group who worked long hours, the elderly, smokers, and females. These results can be used to improve the psychosomatic health status and working environments of employees working in new buildings.
As construction project is becoming larger, construction progress and works are more various and complex according to recent Korean construction tendency. The growth of construction induces much pollution on the progress of construction and the problems due to the construction pollution are raised into social problem strongly, because it is increasing the need on the quality of lift and the desire of clean environment. This study aimed to seek far the effective solving plan of the construction popular complaints by surveying the real condition of construction popular complaints and analyzing the cause and tansaction period of popular complaints. For this study, the laws related and popular complaints were analysed focusing on the documents in low district offices of Gwangju from 2000 to 2004. As a result, the types of construction popular complaints were divided into 17 and the causes were as follows in order: crack and subsidence of ground(14.90%), infringement of private life(11.55%), noise(10.80%), infringement of a right to sunshine(10.07%) and breakdown(6.7%). Consequently, it is considered that these complaints are occurred by physical and environmental causes.
In light of recent social concerns related to issues such as water supply pipe deterioration leading to problems like leaks and degraded water quality, the significance of maintenance efforts to enhance water source quality and ensure a stable water supply has grown substantially. In this study, scan statistic was applied to analyze water quality complaints and water leakage accidents from 2015 to 2021 to present a reasonable method to identify areas requiring improvement in water management. SaTScan, a spatio-temporal statistical analysis program, and ArcGIS were used for spatial information analysis, and clusters with high relative risk (RR) were determined using the maximum log-likelihood ratio, relative risk, and Monte Carlo hypothesis test for I city, the target area. Specifically, in the case of water quality complaints, the analysis results were compared by distinguishing cases occurring before and after the onset of "red water." The period between 2015 and 2019 revealed that preceding the occurrence of red water, the leak cluster at location L2 posed a significantly higher risk (RR: 2.45) than other regions. As for water quality complaints, cluster C2 exhibited a notably elevated RR (RR: 2.21) and appeared concentrated in areas D and S, respectively. On the other hand, post-red water incidents of water quality complaints were predominantly concentrated in area S. The analysis found that the locations of complaint clusters were similar to those of red water incidents. Of these, cluster C7 exhibited a substantial RR of 4.58, signifying more than a twofold increase compared to pre-incident levels. A kernel density map analysis was performed using GIS to identify priority areas for waterworks management based on the central location of clusters and complaint cluster RR data.
