  • Microbial fermented cellulose gel, citrus gel (CG), was successfully fabricated to porous foam by radiation treatment and freeze drying. The chemically induced radiation was used to create highly porous foam and further freeze drying of the CG produced tough foams with interconnected open pores for use in tissue engineering. The microstructure of the CG foam was controlled by varying the irradiation dose and quenching temperature with pore size ranging from several microns to a few hundred microns. Tensile strength and Gurley value of the CG foam were influenced by irradiation dose. These radiation induced CG foams are promising scaffolds for tissue engineering.

  • To protect people and the environment from environmental radiation, the Act on Protective Action Guidelines against Radiation in the Natural Environment was formulated in Korea in 2011. This law regulates matters related to radiation safety that can be encountered in life. In accordance with this law, radiation monitoring equipment is operated at major airports and ports across the country, ensuring radiation monitoring of imported cargo. Currently, six ministries conduct radiation monitoring of imported cargo: the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission; the Korea Customs Service; the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety; the Ministry of Environment; the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs; and the Korea Forest Service. Each ministry designates the relevant cargo items for radiation monitoring. The objective of this study was to comprehensively review the Korean radiation monitoring system for imported cargo and identify the areas and scopes of improvement. This paper also proposes a new law and an integrated supervision plan, which involves establishing a dedicated department to enhance the efficiency and professionalism of the national radiation monitoring system for imported cargo. The review will contribute to the development of a more sophisticated national radiation monitoring system for imported cargo.

  • Ionizing radiation is a both a natural and man-made phenomena that plays a major role in contemporary applications. The detection of this radiation has evolved over the past several decades from simple observations to precise measurements in space, time, and energy, even in harsh environmental conditions. Tn this paper, we present a snapshot of the current state-of-the-art in radiation measurement technology, highlighting the major applications and detector developments.

  • The use of a room-temperature gamma spectrometer is an issue in environmental radiation monitoring. To monitor radionuclides released around a nuclear power plant, suitable instruments giving fast and reliable information are required. High-pressure xenon (HPXe) chambers have range of resolution and efficiency equivalent to those of other medium resolution detectors such as those using NaI(Tl), CdZnTe, and $LaBr_3:Ce$. An HPXe chamber could be a cost-effective alternative, assuming temperature stability and reliability. The CEA LIST actively studied and developed HPXe-based technology applied for environmental monitoring. Xenon purification and conditioning was performed. The design of a 4-L HPXe detector was performed to minimize the detector capacitance and the required power supply. Simulations were done with the MCNPX2.7 particle transport code to estimate the intrinsic efficiency of the HPXe detector. A behavioral study dealing with ballistic deficits and electronic noise will be utilized to provide perspective for further analysis.

  • Gamma-ray treatment was used to exterminate nematodes, which were harmful to agriculture When gamma-ray at the dose range of $5\~75$ kGy was irradaidated, nematodes were reduced by $40\~50\%$ When irradiated over 30 kGy, almost nematodes were non-mobile and fluorochromatic reactions showed that $60\;\~80\%$ of nematodes with non-mobility died after irradiation. The results of electron spin resonance spectroscopy suggested that radicals generated by radiolysis could damage to nematodes.

  • Differences between the principles for the radiological protection of man and the environment are compared. The derived levels of exposure for man and biota recommended by the international agencies with dose rates for chronic radiation producing effects at different levels of biological organization were given in terms of the biological effects. Cytogenetic effects on plants after an exposure to ionizing radiation at low doses alone and in combination with other factors are discussed. A wide range of experimental data were analysed and the general conclusions were extracted to cover the topics such as non-linearity of dose response, synergistic and antagonistic effects of the combined exposure of different factors, radiation-induced genomic instability, and the phenomena of radioadaptation.

  • Beta radiation is measured for an environmental monitoring purpose or for an internal radiation exposure monitoring of nuclear power plant's worker. In korea, strontium 89 and strontium 90 is measured for an environmental monitoring purpose. Also tritium and carbon 14 contained in urine is measured for an internal radiation exposure monitoring of nuclear power plant's worker. Because above isotopes emits low energy beta radiations having a wide range of energy, very complicated isotope separation preprocess is needed. In this study, two mixed beta emitting isotopes are measured simultaneously using a liquid scintillation counter(LSC) and analyzed by using a developed statistical method. Banded least square method is used to analyze the mixed spectrum, and the goodness-of-fitness test is proposed. Test results show that the developed procedure can be very useful for analyzing a mixed beta emitting isotopes.
