  • SAFRS is the system designed to reproduce the harmonic sound into the space according to the environmental factors. Here the harmonic sound means the sound which judged by the subjective tests, and the methods were suggested in the former studies. In this research, SAFRS was applied into the Square of D University to evaluate and verify the effectiveness of the system and a few evaluations were carried out as follows; 1) sound perception, frequency, volume and harmony with the space, 2) images of the square and acoustic environment and 3) acoustic environment with existing sounds, fountain sound, produced sound by SAFRS, and both of them respectively. The results can be summarized as follows; 1) According to the evaluation on acoustic environment, no relationships were shown between the cognition of sounds produced by SAFRS and the frequency or volume, but inverse proportion was shown between the volume and special harmony. 2) As the result of image evaluation. the relationship between space and sound image was shown proportional only except the evaluation on main road at night time, it means that the sound proposal with the visual contents matching with the sounds would be more effective than the proposal of sound only. 3) Results of evaluation on acoustic environment showed that the cognition effect at night time was shown higher than that of day time when only the acoustic element was given and the effect was increased when the visual elements matches with the acoustic elements if both of them were given. It confirmed the harmony between visual and acoustic elements was very important.

  • Treemaps, a space filling visualization technique, displays a massive data set of hierarchical data interactively on a single computer screen by mapping it to a matrix of rectangles. It allows users to visually inspect and manipulate data to find new relationships or discrepancies that are to difficult to find using traditional techniques. This paper applies treemaps to the evaluation of highway project bids, which contain hundreds or thousands of elements arranged in a hierarchical structure. Through a case study, treemaps are shown to be a potentially effective tool for bid evaluation by both contractors and State or Federal highway officials.

  • We implemented ecological linkage assessment, through the connection components of the urban forests, rivers and parks, for the ecological connection of the urban parks which are standing out as the core of the urban green networks, so as to suggest basic data to compare, evaluate and improve urban green networks, as a basic study for the evaluation of the ecological connectabilities between the cities. For the ecological linkage assessment, we analyzed to see if the urban parks of Goyang, Ansan and Yongin, which are the subject cities, are actually ecologically connected with forests and rivers, using distance and roads, which are physical connection elements, in consideration of the mobility of the wild animals, and greening ratios and impervious pavement ratios, which are ecological connectabilities in consideration of the ecological values. The overall result of the ecological linkage assessment the physical connection elements and the ecological connection elements shows that the ecological green network ratio through direct connection states is 36.62% in Goyang, 42.55% in Ansan and 64.00% in Yongin, respectively, giving the ecological connectability ratio of less than half, with the average urban ecological green network ration of 47.72%. The comparison result of the ecological connectabilities between the object cities employing the connection elements indicates that when you set up green networks, you should consider together the physical connection elements, such as the roads, which will lower the ecological connectabilities - rather than do it simply based on areas and distances - while the ecological connection elements with the forests and the streams should be reinforced, so that the ecological connectabilities of the urban parks may be enhanced.

  • The influence of different forming elements on the local paper structure and the related paper properties was investigated in this study. Specifically, a conventional papermaking foil system and a velocity induced drainage (VID) system were compared. The study involved the analysis of the product samples obtained from the commercial machine trials. The paper samples produced with VID forming systems showed better formation. The deterministic patter in the local structural profile map of the Foil samples indicated the structure of foil samples was more supple after forming process and then easier to be marked by various fabrics such as wet pressing fabric. The higher bulk was observed in the VID samples, which resulted in higher scattering coefficient, lower ZDT strength, and higher bending stiffness.
