Study on Water Quality of Spring Water in Seoul (서울지역 약수터의 수질특성에 관한 연구)

  • We investigated springs in Seoul in 2009 to know the change of water quality according to storage method of spring water, the concentration of chemical compounds and their correlation. Even spring water that originally satisfied national standard for drinking water could be exceeded national standard for drinking water by storage method such as storage bottle, temperature and period; especially used PET bottles could affect the increase of total colony counts. Therefore, spring water is desirable to be consumed on the spot, or to be stored in sterilized bottles in refrigerator rather than room temperature at home, and also to be consumed shortly not exceeding 24 hours. Total colony counts, coliform, yersinia, $F^-$, $Cl^-$, $NO_3^--N$, hardness, total Solids, pH, color and Al were exceeded national standard for drinking water at some springs. The result of correlation analysis shows that hardness and total solids, which are caused by several ionic compounds, had relatively high correlations with other chemical compounds.

Relationships between Teamwork Skills and Thinking Styles in Engineering Students (공과대학생의 팀워크 역량과 사고양식의 관계)

  • This research aims to explore the relationships between 'teamwork skills' (often called team activity competence) and 'thinking styles' of engineering students in Korea, and to provide an explanation for the application of team-based environment as well as for the increase of teamwork skills. Teams and team activity are pervasive in today's organization and there has been relatively much research on teamwork skills and its related factors. However, to date, little attention has been paid to the teamwork skills, essential factor in team-based environment and its relationships with thinking styles. This study was conducted with 383 engineering students at P University, and students' teamwork skills as well as thinking styles have been measured before and after team-based learning class (hereafter TBL). Our findings show that firstly, there was a significant increase of teamwork skills between before and after TBL class. Second, team activity competence was found to have a higher correlation with most of creativity generating styles (i.e. legislative, judicial, hierarchical and global styles). Third, hierarchical style was found to influence team activity more than other components, and also legislative, external, global and judicial styles contributed to team-based activity. These findings are expected to provide an explanation for the application of thinking styles in team-based environment and will be useful for the improvement of related courses in engineering school.

Study on the Enumeration of Legionella in Environmental Water Samples Using Real-time PCR (Real-time PCR을 이용한 환경 중 물 시료의 레지오넬라 분석법 연구)

  • Objectives: The standard method for the enumeration of environmental Legionella is culturing, which has several disadvantages, including long incubation and poor sensitivity. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the usefulness of real-time PCR and to improve the standard method. Methods: In 200 environmental water samples, a real-time PCR and culture were conducted to detect and quantify Legionella. Using with the results of the survey, we compared the real-time PCR with the culture. Results: Each real-time PCR assay had 100% specificity and excellent sensitivity (5 GU/reaction). In the culture, 36 samples were positive and 164 samples were negative. Based on the results of the culture, real-time PCR showed a high negative predictive value of 99%, 35 samples were true positive, 105 samples were true negative, 59 samples were false positive and one sample was a false negative. Quantitative analysis of the two methods indicated a weak linear correlation ($r^2=0.29$, $r^2=0.61$, respectively). Conclusions: Although it is difficult to directly apply quantitative analysis results of real-time PCR in the enumeration of environmental Legionella, it can be used as a complementary means of culturing to rapidly screen negative samples and to improve the accuracy of diagnosis.

Distribution of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in Different Sizes of Particles in the Ambient Air of the Pyeongteak Area (평택지역 대기 중 먼지 입경별 잔류성유기오염물질 분포특성 연구)

  • Objectives: The concentration distributions of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenlys (dl-PCBs), and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in fine particles were investigated to provide basic data on POP behavior and composition analysis. Methods: The concentrations of PCDD/Fs, dl-PCBs, and PAHs by particle size were evaluated for TSP, PM10, and PM2.5. Also, fine dust component analysis and factor analysis were performed to identify the source of PCDD/Fs. Results: The particle size distribution was found to account for 24.3% of >10 ㎛, 14.5% of 2.5-10 ㎛, and 61.2% of <2.5 ㎛. The average contributions of coarse particles (>2.5 ㎛) and fine particles (<2.5 ㎛) were PCDD/Fs 67%, dl-PCBs 66%, benzo (a) pyrene 83% and PAHs 84%, and the contributions of fine particles (<2.5 ㎛) were higher than coarse particles (>2.5 ㎛). However, the contributions of coarse particles increased in April to September with higher temperatures, while those of fine particles increased in February to March with lower temperatures. Conclusions: Low chlorinated (4Cl-5Cl) PCDD/Fs were more adsorbed compared to coarse particles due to the influence of pollutant migration from particulate to gas phase according to temperature rise, whereas high chlorinated (6Cl-8Cl) PCDD/Fs were more adsorbed compared to fine particles. PCDD/Fs sources were assessed to be major sources of emissions, such as incineration facilities and/or open burning.

  • The purpose of the study was to examine the correlations between team cognition and team process and team performance in e-learning based team learning environment. 55 graduate students consisting of 11 teams participated in the study voluntarily during the spring semester. In the result, it was found that team cognition had no relationship with team process and performance although sub-variables of team cognition and team process as well as team performance had a significant relation with each other. Some further research issues were addressed in terms of team leadership and potential variables affecting each variables.

  • In recent years, concerns have been growing globally regarding greenhouse gases. Open burning of biomass causes emission of a number of greenhouse and other gases and substances. This paper studied an analysis on the characteristics of four types of biomass using duel type cone calorimeter. Cone calorimeter is widely used for assessing combustibility of materials in Europe. As a result, we evaluated several characteristics of biomass, such as heat released rate, smoke production rate, CO, $CO_2$ production and mass loss rate, and so on. $CO_2$ is currently responsible for over $60\%$ of the enhanced greenhouse effect, and may be the most important contributor to future. $CO_2$ production for biomass in the range of $1.74\~1.99kg/kg$ is similar to previous research conducted by Bhattacharya et al. (2002a).

Distribution and Toxin Gene Characteristic of Bacillus cereus Isolated from Foods in Busan (부산지역 가공식품 중 Bacillus cereus 분포 현황 및 독소 유전자 특성)

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic data necessary for the prevention of food poisoning and safe food management. We examined 872 food samples for B. cereus in accordance with the MFDS Food Code and investigated characteristics of their harboring toxin genes. We detected and isolated 113 strains of B. cereus from 78 food samples (8.9%), and the average detection level was 48 CFU/g. B. cereus isolates carried at least 1 toxin gene among the emetic toxins and 5 enterotoxin genes. The toxin gene profiles of B. cereus were classified into 18 different types of isolates showing genetic diversity. Among the strains, 34 (30.1%) had all 5 enterotoxin genes (Cytk-nheA-entFM-bceT-hblC), accounting for the highest percentage. The entFM and nheA genes were major enterotoxin genes, while the emetic toxin gene, CER, was the least detected in B. cereus isolated from food samples.

An Analysis Method and Environment for Team Project-Based Learning in Non-Face-to-Face Situation for Student Evaluation (비대면 팀 프로젝트 기반 수업 평가를 위한 분석 방법 및 평가환경)

  • An educator may utilize various pedagogies such as hands-on practice, practicum, and project-based learning to enhance a student's competency. Among various pedagogies, project-based learning is one of the well-known pedagogies that may provide similar on-the-job experience. In general, an educator may divide the students into small groups and assign tasks to check students' cooperation skills and achievements during project-based learning. However, an educator may experience difficulties operating project-based learning due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Most of the team activities are done in non-face-to-face meetings, and as a consequence, the educator may not find an underachieving team easily and cannot intervene appropriately. This study introduces a rigorous analysis method to evaluate team activities to analyze individual students' participation and contributions. First, this study develops evaluation rubrics by conducting questionnaires to professors and students to find an appropriate weight value for the evaluation scale. Then, this research introduces an analysis environment to evaluate students automatically. The analysis environment collects dialog data from social network services and measures interactions among students in a team. After measuring interactions, the environment generates a report to visualize the team activities. We applied the proposed method and environment to the capstone design course to show the effectiveness of the method and environment. Based on the case study, the environment showed that the analysis method could easily indicate the teams' activities and check the level of participation.

Microbial Contamination Levels of Red Pepper Powder Purchased in Gyeonggi Province and Changes in Characteristics According to the Storage Method

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the microbial contamination of red pepper powder distributed within Gyeonggi province in 2020 according to the place of purchase, the country of origin, and whether the HACCP certification and sterilization were conducted, and to evaluate the change of quality according to the storage method. Upon collecting and analyzing 100 samples, Bacillus cereus was detected in 3 cases (2 cases in large supermarkets and 1 case in traditional markets) and Clostridium perfringens in 27 cases (9 cases in large supermarkets and 18 cases in traditional markets). The levels of the total aerobic bacteria were not significantly different between the red pepper powder purchased from large supermarkets and traditional markets. However, the frequency of red pepper powder exceeding 7 log CFU/g of total aerobic bacteria was higher in traditional markets than in large supermarkets. Microbial quality was not significantly different regardless of the storage temperature (30℃, 4℃, -20℃) and the packaging method (zipper bag and clean bag) after 7 months of purchase. However, the moisture contents and ASTA color value of red pepper powder stored at 30℃ decreased remarkably after 3 months of storage. It is desirable to store red pepper powder in a refrigerator or freezer in order to maintain its quality during long-term storage.
